***** OUTREACH NOTICE ***** *OKANOGAN-WENATCHEE NATIONAL FOREST* FOREST PATHOLOGIST GS-0434-9/11 PFT The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest will soon be advertising one permanent full-time Forest Pathologist, GS-434-9/11 position located at the Forestry Sciences Lab in Wenatchee, Washington. The response to this outreach will determine how the position will be advertised. About the Position: The incumbent serves as a Forest Pathologist for the Wenatchee Forest Insect and Disease Service Center. The team also includes one GS-13 Forest Pathologist, one GS-13 and one GS-11 Forest Entomologist, and one GS-9 Technician/GIS specialist. Qualification Requirements Those who are interested must meet the qualification requirements for the listed series that is covered by the Technical and Medical Support standards. Basic requirements can be found on the Office of Personnel Management website, Group Coverage Qualifications Standards for Professional and Scientific Positions: http://www.opm.gov/qualifications/standards/group-stds/gs-prof.asp Requirements specific to the occupational series are also on the OPM website, Individual Occupational Requirements for the Plant Pathology Series: http://www.opm.gov/qualifications/standards/IORs/gs0400/0434.htm Wenatchee Forest Insect & Disease Service Center: The Okanogan-Wenatchee acts as a “host” forest for the Wenatchee Forest Insect & Disease Service Center, which is a field office of USDA Forest Service, State and Private Forestry, Forest Health Protection. The Service Center is physically located at the Wenatchee Forestry Sciences Laboratory, about three and one-half miles south of the Forest Supervisor’s Office. The Service Center provides forest insect and disease expertise to all federal lands in much of eastern and central Washington. The service area also extends to the west side of the Cascade Mountains. Our clients include the Okanogan-Wenatchee, Colville and Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forests, the Colville, Kalispel, Spokane and Yakama Indian Reservations, Mt. Rainier and North Cascades National Parks, Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area, Little Pend Oreille and Turnbull National Wildlife Refuges, Spokane BLM District, Wenatchee BLM Resource Area, and Fairchild Airforce Base. The total land base for all clients is about 16 million acres. Some of the major diseases of concern are dwarf mistletoes, root diseases, stem decays, and foliar pathogens. The Community: The Wenatchee Valley is nestled on the shores of the Columbia River. It is located in Central Washington just 100 miles southeast of Seattle and 165 miles west of Spokane. It is a climate of hot, dry summers and cold, snowy winters. The Greater Wenatchee Area has approximately 68,000 residents who enjoy living in a region with four distinct seasons. Housing costs in Wenatchee average $204,800, while the average rental cost is $675.00/$800.00/mo (2 bedroom/2bath). Wenatchee is a full-service community providing access to a large museum and cultural center, plays and concerts, major medical services, several health and athletic clubs, and a small nearby airport with service to a larger hub in Seattle.

Outdoor Recreation: Outdoor recreational opportunities abound in the area. If you are a skier, there are three major ski areas within 60 minutes of Wenatchee as well as several small local ski areas. There are various cross country ski trails and opportunities for heli-skiing. The forest’s trail and road systems allow for snowmobiling, horse back riding, mountain biking, trailbike riding and snowshoeing. Wildlife habitat provides a wide array of hunting opportunities from elk, deer and bear to pheasant, chukkar and grouse. Streams, ponds, rivers and lakes harbor several varieties of trout and opportunities abound for water sports enthusiasts. Whether it’s scenic vistas, para-gliding, rock climbing, kayaking or camping activities you enjoy, the Okanogan and Wenatchee provides abundant opportunities. Education: The community’s higher education needs are met by Wenatchee Valley College, a comprehensive community college featuring two-year degree programs and transfer programs in conjunction with state four-year institutions including Eastern Washington University, Central Washington University and Washington State University. The Wenatchee and Eastmont school districts serve 9,000 students in 11 elementary schools, two special education schools, four middle and junior high schools, an alternative high school, and two senior high schools, one AAA and one AAAA. In addition to public education, three private religious schools, a Head Start program, and numerous pre-schools and kindergartens serve the area. All the school districts in Wenatchee are proud to offer students ample opportunity for academic and athletic excellence. Health Care: Central Washington Hospital (located in Wenatchee) is the major health care facility in the region. All medical services are provided including open heart surgery. The Wenatchee Valley Medical Center is currently staffed by 108 certified physicians and 448 support personnel. The Center provides extensive diagnostic and research services and features 28 specialty and sub-specialty departments such as the Wenatchee Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Clinic, the Eye and Ear Clinic of Wenatchee and Central Washington Cancer Center, which works in conjunction with the Central Washington Hospital. Over 60 dentists, hygienists, orthodontists, and dental laboratories serve the Wenatchee area. Wenatchee also has a life flight helicopter stationed at Central Washington Hospital and Executive Flight possesses three jet air ambulances stationed at Pangborn Airport in East Wenatchee.
