OUTREACH NOTICE Forestry Technician (Timber Stand Improvement) GS-0462-05 Temporary Seasonal (1039) Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest Chelan, Entiat Ranger District The Chelan and Entiat Ranger Districts, of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest will be advertising for two temporary seasonal Forestry Technician (Timber Stand Improvement) positions located at the District Offices in Chelan, and Entiat, Washington. The announcement number for this position will be posted to USAJobs https://www.usajobs.gov on January 6th and will be advertised till January 12th 2015. The positions are under the following announcement number 15-TEMP-R60462-5-TSI-DT-RK. About the Position: This position is established on a Forest Service unit to perform technical duties in timber stand improvement, reforestation, and tree improvement. The work is performed in a forest environment where terrain may be uneven, rocky, and covered with thick vegetation. Climatic conditions range from extremely hot and dry to extremely cold and wet. Rain, snow, wind, or dust may be encountered. The work involves regular and recurring risks or discomforts that require safety precautions or the use of safety equipment such as boots, gloves, goggles, and hardhats. Major duties include and are not limited to:  Inspecting silvicultural contract work (e.g., genetic tree improvement, planting, thinning, seeding, site preparation) for compliance with contract. Explains steps necessary for compliance to contractor and reports violations to COR. May act as COR on various silvicultural contracts.  Examines sapling and larger stands to collect and record data on stocking, density, condition, insects, disease, site index, and ground vegetation. Makes recommendations for areas requiring remedial action.  Examines plantations to assess numbers of tree seedlings present, condition, growth and survival rates, and evidence of animal, insect or disease damage.  Selects prospective parent seed trees using established procedures to determine which trees have superior growth characteristics.  Determines the relative abundance and species of seed cones by observing the developing cone and pollen buds.  As assigned, performs resource work in other functional areas, including fire suppression as qualified.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION: Chelan The Chelan Ranger Station occupies a beautiful waterfront site at the foot of 55-mile long Lake Chelan, the deepest gorge and third deepest lake in the United States. The Chelan Ranger District, which encompasses some 422,000 acres, is the northern-most district of the Wenatchee National Forest. The Chelan RD maintains large programs in wilderness recreation, winter recreation, recreationally oriented special use permits, and fire management. Hunting, hiking, horse riding, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and boat camping are among the most frequent uses of the district. Lake Chelan provides innumerable recreation opportunities throughout the four distinct seasons. A majority of the shoreline along the lake is either on National Forest or in the Lake Chelan National Recreation Area, part of the North Cascades National Park complex. Boating, jet skiing, swimming, fishing, and canoeing are common recreational pursuits. Chelan itself is a community of 3,900 and sits at the southeastern end of Lake Chelan. Tourism, agriculture, and retirement/summer living are the economic mainstays of the area. A mayor-council-city administrator form of government leads the City of Chelan. Chelan has excellent schools, including one elementary school, one middle school, one high school and one alternative school. The Lake Chelan Community Hospital provides competent, basic medical care. Comprehensive medical care is available in nearby Wenatchee (35 miles away). Vision care and dental services are available in Chelan. Real estate in Chelan tends to be priced higher than statewide averages, due to demand for property for vacation or second home purposes. Three-bedroom homes sell for $250,000 to $350,000 and up, depending on amenities and location. Rental properties are available and can range in price from $800-$1,200 depending on size and location. Utilities are reasonably priced in Chelan. Nearby Manson provides additional living choices. Only seven miles from Chelan, Manson is smaller (pop. 1500), cozier and quieter than Chelan. Apple, pear and cherry orchards blanket the foothills around town, and the largest commercial enterprise is Wapato Point, a condominium community with unparalleled access to Lake Chelan. COMMUNITY INFORMATION: Entiat The Entiat Ranger District is located approximately 18 miles north of Wenatchee, WA on Highway 97A, in the town of Entiat, Washington with a population of approximately 1500 people. Entiat is located in Chelan County, near the banks of the Columbia River and Lake Entiat, approximately 160 miles East of Seattle, Washington. Many recreational opportunities abound, such as camping, fishing, hunting, hiking, biking, water-skiing, sailing, cross country skiing, skiing, snowmobiling, boating, and much more. Housing in the area is available locally and in the Wenatchee area. There is no government housing available in the local area. Wenatchee’s has a population of over 45,000 inhabitants. Housing prices range from $110,000 - $200,000+. Apartment rentals range from $500 to $700 month for 1 bedroom and $600 to $800+ per month for 2 bedrooms.
