afraid that this is one gift that we don’t share enough together. We seem to take ourselves and others too seriously.

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ,

It is written: Ludwig Bemelmans writes in his book, My War with the United States, that among the many regulations published by the Army is a book that gives advice on practical matters to noncommissioned officers. One piece of advice suggests a way to help solders who have quarreled, become friends again. The solders are assigned to wash the same window, one working on the outside and the other working on the inside.

Imagination was given to man to compensate him for what he is not. A sense of humor was to provide to console for what he is. In my study is a picture that my wife gave many years ago. It is a picture of Jesus laughing. I keep it there to reminding me of the joy of life when I sometimes take myself too seriously. It sure makes life more fun.

Bermelmans said, “Looking at each other, they soon have to laugh and all is forgotten. It works, I’ve tried it.”

A merry heart doeth good like a medicine Proverbs 17:22

Laughter shared between friends is one of life’s great treasurers. It is impossible to stay angry with someone when you are laughing together. I am

mingled together in fellowship and experienced a rewarding evening.

A MISSION MOMENT Methodist youth networks from around the globe gathered in Brazil last January for a leadership seminar on Wesleyan identity at the world Social Forum. These young people came from Brazil, Chile, Bolivia, Paraguay, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cambodia, Indonesia, Switzerland, Mozambique and the United States. The participants worked on proposals that would keep them united in hope and action as they strive for a possible world in which all share the goal of peace-building and reconciliation. from Rosangela Oliviers-US/Brazil Missionary.

Many thanks to Cyndi Pinkham for the typing, collating and printing our Mother's Day Booklet. We also thank those who contributed to the listings and their donations. All the monies go toward our mission projects. We hope all our moms had a happy day! The Father's Day Booklet order form is available with a submission deadline of June 11. Father's Day is June 18. Speaking of fathers...thank you to the Tuesday Men for the presentation of song and a rose for every lady in Church on Mother's Day. All of these guys are dads, grandpas and great grandpas...and we love 'em!

Let us keep in our prayers: The Methodist Confederation of Youth/Young Adult Leadership Training; Brazil Youth Training and Human Rights; Brazil Methodist Association of Social Action: Brazil

The next UMW meeting will be held June 15 at 7:30 pm in the parlor. Betty Carson will lead the worship and program, "Grant Me a Godward Vision." Karen Malgraff is hostess for the evening. All the ladies of the church are invited to attend. We are usually home by 9 pm. If transportation is needed please call Ann Aupperle, UMW president and she will make arrangements.

********************************* UNITED METHODIST WOMEN Our May 11 program 'Sing a Long' with Pilgrim State guests was an overwhelming success. Ten guests and two attendants enjoyed a repast of delicious finger foods and fellowship with our UMW members and four men from the Tuesday Men's Group. Our parlor was arranged with clothed bridge tables, floral centerpieces and matching paper goods. Many thanks to Marge and Martha for the set-up and Nancy for her singing leadership, and to all the ladies for their homemade goodies! We were able to package many of the cakes and goodies for our guests to enjoy the following day. We all

craft at home, all donations of hand made items are welcome. Do you work all day and would like to participate? Ginny is holding a once-amonth Friday workshop in her home, and the ornaments these 'newbies' completed are great and a welcome addition. See Ginny for details. the Youth Group would like to use card tables in lieu of the large banquet tables. If you can provide a table for the evening, please sign-up in the hallway or contact Youth Group Leaders, Lara Manjares & Jen Malgraf. Sobana Prasad is organizing the decorations. The color theme will be Red, Gold and White. If you have any decorations or would like to make a small contribution to defray the cost, please contact Sobana.

There will still be a cake celebration where the congregation can congratulate the confirmands, immediately following the Confirmation Service on Sunday, June 4th.

The quote of the month is by Jay Leno: "With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?"

Confirmation Class to conclude with Mission Projects This year’s confirmation class will incorporate a mission project into their celebration party. Each confirmand has selected a mission project and will be asking his guests to bring a contribution to that project in lieu of a personal gift. Not all projects were known when the Messenger went to print, but suggested ideas included collecting food to stock our food pantry for the summer or collecting Home Depot gift cards that could be sent to our Conference Mission Teams traveling to the gulf area to help with Katrina Restoration. If you would like to honor a confirmand by contributing to a project, please speak with that individual to find out about his particular mission project. The full list will be available on Confirmation Sunday. The gifts are being collected the following Sunday, June 11th.

Youth Group Hosting Celebration Party for Confirmands

The Youth Group is going to host a party on Sunday, June 11th, from 6:30 – 9:30PM. The confirmands will be inviting friends to come and celebrate this momentous occasion with them. The party will include a dinner followed by dancing with Nancy and Pete Gamby providing DJ services. All youth confirmed in the past five years are also invited and encouraged to invite their friends to come celebrate with this year’s class as well. To make Fellowship Hall more festive,

should not be treated as a single event in life, but a beginning of their faith journey. He asked them all to remember that God, their Father, would always be with them and available to provide them strength and courage when they needed it.

Sunday School Preparing for Yearend Program The Sunday School has begun their preparations for their end of the year program where they will lead the Worship Service on Sunday, June 26th. The theme of this year’s program is The Lord is My Shepherd. We hope everyone will be able to join us that Sunday to worship with all our children and Youth.

The day concluded with a bridge building contest using craft sticks, tape, rubber bands and yarn. Unfortunately the Commack Pedros’ bridge did not make it to the final round. The winning bridge held 9 bricks! The message is that just as a craft stick bridge really isn’t designed to bear heavy loads (even though some can hold more than others), neither is a human designed to bear those loads. To a human these can be loads of envy, guilt, anger, hurt, and vengeance. We must take these burdens and give them to God. If not, we will continue to hurt, sometimes cracking, sometimes breaking up completely, sometimes staying whole but falling over multiple times. This was a very effective visual message for all who attended.

Confirmation Class 2006 Attended the Bishop’s Rally

On Saturday, May 13th, our confirmation class together with mentor Ginny Eichenauer and chaperones Al Fick, Maureen Kessler and Deb Hervey traveled to Valhalla to meet and celebrate becoming full members of the church with Bishop Park. Henry Klosowski, John Kessler’s cousin who is being confirmed in the Woodbury United Methodist Church also came with the class. The day started with each class meeting and being photographed with the Bishop. Then everyone got their energy levels up by playing various large group games. (Ask one of the confirmands about Move your Buns or TP Football!)

Vacation Bible School 2006 – God’s Treasure Seekers Come and join other Treasure Seekers at Vacation Bible School (VBS) 2006. Participants from ages 3 to 103 will be able to seek, find and learn more about the Treasure God has for us. Professor Whoo will be opening each day to give us hints on what Treasures we will be seeking each day as we explore the following themes and bible stories. • God Loves You – Love for Naomi • God Knows You – David, a Shepherd, Becomes King • God Treasures You – Jesus, the Good Shepherd

The energy level increased even further during a very inspiring worship service including praise songs and a lively message from Bishop Park where he encouraged all confirmands to get involved in the life of the church. He shared with them that confirmation 4

God Forgives You – The Prodigal Son • God is with You – Jesus Appears to the Disciples VBS will kickoff on Sunday, June 26th at 6:30 PM. Sessions will run 6:30 – 8:30 through Thursday, June 30th. Help is needed in the following areas – Opening Celebration Leaders (script is provided for a skit between the leader and puppets), Craft Helpers and Games Leaders as well as people to run the registration/check-in table each night. There will be a sign-up sheet in the hallway starting June 4th or you can contact Deb Hervey, VBS Director.

THRIFT SHOPPE… As part of our ongoing beautification project, the Thrift Shoppe has generously offered to pay for the tree/stump/bushes removal on the Townline Road side of the R.E. Building. This will enable us to continue with that phase of the project. On that note, the Memorial Committee still has eight memorials/honorials open for the flowering trees along Townline Road. If you are interested in a memorial/honorial for a loved one, please see Kathy Muller.

BOOKS NEEDED As you are looking over your library, if you have any duplicate books, consider the following: The New Orleans Public Library is asking for any and all hardcover and paperback books to restock the shelves after Katrina. The library staff will assess which titles will be designated for the shelves. The rest will be distributed to destitute families or sold for library fundraising. The books can be sent to:

Happy 80th Birthday to Donna Boyd!

***Please remember – after the chairlift is used, it must be brought to the top (with the charge light on) so it’s available for use by someone else.

Rica A. Trigs, Public Relations New Orleans Public Library 219 Loyola Avenue New Orleans, LA 70112 If you tell the post office that the books are for the library in New Orleans, they will give you the library rate that is less than book rate. Please check with them. THANK YOU!

program brought live marine specimens to the school allowing the children some exciting hands on time with live marine animals. This program set up aquariums in some of the classrooms for a long term learning experience. A great big thank you to our peanut butter gang. Saturday, May 6th was another successful day for our regulars, scouts and high school helpers. We were able to make and deliver 750 sandwiches this month. That’s 750 people fed!!! It is not only the people who are able to spread peanut butter that we have to thank, but also those who contribute peanut butter, jelly, bread, baggies, boxes, gloves and cash that make this ministry possible. Thanks again go to Pepperidge Farm outlet store in Elwood for their bread donations. Remember us during the summer months – we will be here the first Saturday of each month at 8:30 am.

change that you have. This money will be used to buy shoes for need6y children when they go back to school in September. Last year we were able to supply shoes to 12 children. This is not in place of our annual school supply drive, but an additional step in helping these children stay in school so they can use education as a stepping stone to a better life. Only with our help will these children be able to break the poverty cycle. “Let us be concerned for one another, to help one another to show love and to do good.” Hebrews 10:24 Please continue to inform us of any need in the congregation or the community. We can only help if you let us know where help is needed. Contact the office or a committee member and we will do our best to respond. We wish you all a happy and blessed summer. Anne Tammaro and Gail Stroup Missions Workarea

As summer approaches we think of vacations and fun, but for many families, vacations from school means hunger for their children. Children who depend on school breakfasts and lunches may have to do without because their parents struggle to keep a roof over their heads. With the rising cost of housing on Long Island, low income families fight daily to avoid homelessness. Please let us continue to help hurting people by making an extra effort to keep our food box filled over the summer. Especially needed are tuna fish, peanut butter, jelly, soups, pasta, canned fruit, juice, and cereal. As always, anyone who would like to contribute fresh fruits, vegetables, milk, eggs or bread can contact me (631486-2047) for immediate pickups. Thanks to your generosity these children will know that they are not forgotten. Each Sunday a container will be in the back of the sanctuary for any spare
