Stakeholder Report

Orem HIGH

School Community Council very public school in Utah has a School Community Council (SCC). These councils are comprised of parents (who are elected by parents of students attending the school), the school principal, and school employees (who are elected by other employees). Elections for the SCC at Orem High School are held at the beginning of each school year. There are always at least two more parents on the SCC than school employees. Membership terms are two years.

E

The main purposes of the SCC are to develop, approve, and assist in implementing the School Improvement Plan, and to allocate LAND Trust funds based on this plan. The council reviews and prepares this plan and allocation of funds each year. All plans are reviewed for final approval by the district school board. The SCC also acts as an advisory committee to the administration. The School Community Council meets on the third Tuesday of every month. This is a great opportunity to be more involved in the school, and to ensure the fund allocated from Trust Lands is used to better serve student learning at Orem High School. If you are interested in learning more or in joining the SCC, please contact the SCC Chair, Aerwyn Whitlock at [email protected]. Information such as minutes of the meetings, the names and contact information for council members, dates and times of meetings, and previous LAND Trust plans can be found at http://ohs.alpineschools.org/ptsa-and-sccinformation. For those who cannot access this information via the internet, SCC information is available in the Main Office upon request.

rem High values the importance of education after high school. Orem High strives for ALL students to take advantage of this opportunity. Performing well on the ACT, accessing scholarships, learning more about various career options, and knowing the requirements for college will provide students that chance. Passing the ACT with a score of 18 or higher will provide students with scholarships and advantages in college. Orem High provides ACT prep classes monthly where students can improve their knowledge and skills to perform well on the ACT.

A fundamental key to this success is the vision of learning: focusing on the essential knowledge, skills, and dispositions that Orem High students need to continue to learn. Our efforts have proven to be a great model for student success. More students are graduating, taking the ACT, and improving their scores. Our AP pass rates have increased, as well as the number of students earning college credit through conurrent enrolment and college courses.

We believe to improve behavior, it has to be a shared goal. Orem High has made a common commitment to “Always speak in a professional and positive manner, assume goodwill, talk positively about others… and celebrate student success.” We have witnessed more school unity and improved relationships with students and teachers.
