SPARTAN SCOOP Grundy Center Schools Are Up to the Challenge…Again! The Bank Iowa Challenge Cup recognizes school systems that provide students opportunities for success in athletics, academics and the arts. As was the case last year, Grundy Center Schools were again rated as one of the top ten schools in Class A. In addition to a full complement of opportunities in athletics, dance/cheer and the arts, Grundy Center Students can participate and excel in Academic Decathlon, Lego League, First Tech Challenge, and a myriad of science, math and literacy programs (e.g. Battle of the Books, Science Fair, etc). If we also consider the local, regional and national-level success we have had in a number of these programs along with our national-level opportunities in FFA, German Exchange and this year’s Band Trip to Chicago…there are lots of opportunities for our students to connect to the world from Grundy Center, Iowa! Although all of our advisors are dedicated and deserve recognition, I would like to highlight the efforts of Don Osterhaus for his dedication and leadership of our Academic Decathlon program. Under Don’s leadership, Grundy Center sent four students to Nationals last spring…a first for the State of Iowa…and our students performed extremely well on the national stage. Thanks, Don, for all you do for our students!

Spartan Scoop Who Will Make the World a Better Place? Spartans Will!

Fall is Here! October 4 is Walk or Bike to School Day. We encourage all town students to walk or ride their bikes to school while following all of the safety rules. If your child rides a bus, we will drop off all elementary students at the high school, and we will walk to the elementary. Kids Club has kicked off for the school year! At our first Kids Club meeting, students had the chance to meet their newest club members and name their group. This month, Kids Club will focus on the Reading Without Walls Challenge. Fundraising pickup will be on Tuesday the 17th from 3:00-6:00pm in the elementary lunchroom. Please be prompt in delivering the items to those kindly purchased. We appreciate all of the support! Parent teacher conferences are already upon us! On October 24th and 25th, parent teacher conferences will run from 2:00-8:00. If you have any concerns, please feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher before conferences. On Saturday, September 30th, teachers at Grundy Center Elementary hosted teachers, librarians, and other children’s book lovers from around the state for the third annual Think In. The participants learned via Web conferencing from keynote speaker and children’s book guru, Colby Sharp along with authors, Joseph Kuefler, Jess Keating, Katy Kelly, and Judd Winick. Every participant went home with prizes and free books! Students celebrated International Dot Day by creating dots and painted rocks which now decorate the area below the television in the lobby. Dot day is celebrated with the book The Dot by Peter Reynolds and emphasizes creativity and growth mindset. There is a lot to look forward to in October! Brian Sammons, Elementary Principal

Football Game Expectations

Spartan Scoop Page 2

I am so glad many students are able to attend home Spartan football games. Here are a few reminders for students: Students may play on the grass to the east of the stands before the game and at halftime only. Touch football is permitted, but no tackling or piling on other students. Students should stay seated in the bleachers during the game and not run around. Be respectful of others. Watch the game and cheer on the Spartans! Use the restroom and get concessions during quarter and halftime breaks.

Think In 2017 was a HUGE success. It was so exciting learning about great new books and talking with 5 authors!

Students are not allowed to stop and hang out under the bleachers. Students are allowed to sit on the first row of bleachers, but not stand at the railing. Keep the walkways clear. Thanks for your cooperation!

Mrs. Strohbehn’s Kids Club met in September, got to know each other, and named their group!

Spartan Scoop Page 3 Be on the lookout for more character pumpkins in the elementary this month. It is a tradition for staff members to choose a character from a children’s book and make a pumpkin!

Kindergarteners work on Word Work!

Mrs. Dole’s second grade class is making sure they are reading a lot of books this year with the Book-a-Day program. One new book is read aloud EVERY SINGLE DAY! Way to go, Mrs. Dole!

Third grade students decorated “dot rocks” for International Dot Day. They are proudly displayed beside the fountain at the front entrance.

Third grade teachers Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Albright, and Mrs. Walters make a great team and have also mastered the art of dressing alike.

First grade students experimented with what they could move with JUST air!

First grade students learned about bus safety!

Mrs. Steenhoek created a display where all students are represented. It is based on the book, Tap the Magic Tree by Christie Matheson.

Katherine Applegate is the award winning author of the bool The One and Only Ivan and her newest book Wishtree was released on Tuesday, September 26th. The students in Mrs. Lechtenberg’s resource class celebrated by making a giant tree in the classroom! They also made birthday cards for the book and enjoyed cupcakes with trees on top while Mrs. Lechtenberg read the first chapter to them!

September 15, 2017 Mrs. Leverton

On Friday, September 15, Elementary students and staff celebrated “Dot Day.” Many students and staff read the story, The Dot by Peter Reynolds and/or listened to the song and watched the video that was created based on this book. Peter Reynolds presents the idea that each of us has a creative side or in his words, “creative spirit.” To show our creative sides, students were given a dot in which to create their own image or design to make their very own. Students used everything from markers to crayons, to paint to create their dot. During art class, 3rd graders painted a rock incorporating their own dot designs and a special word. All paper dots and rocks were brought together to create the display you see above.
