STARTUP BOOT CAMP MEDELLIN, COLOMBIA OCTOBER 16, 2015 GIST (Global Innovation through Science and Technology) empowers young innovators through networking, skills building, mentoring, and access to financing to develop startup solutions that address economic and development challenges. Since 2011, GIST has engaged with more than 2.8 million innovators and entrepreneurs worldwide, and mentored over 4,500 startups that have generated more than $110 million in revenue. GIST inspires, identifies, supports, and connects young innovators across the globe through:



GIST Net helps the most connected generation in history advance their ventures by sharing and learning from peers and successful entrepreneurs with diverse backgrounds and experiences. GIST Net supports science and technology entrepreneurs in emerging economies as they build innovative new businesses to tackle their community’s most pressing challenges.



TechConnects are live interactive webcasts on entrepreneurship topics that enable global youth to ask leading experts for advice.



Startup Boot Camps support science and technology (S&T) startups through hands-on mentorship, training activities and information on funding, led by U.S. and local entrepreneurs and investors.



The GIST Tech-I Competition is an annual competition for science and technology entrepreneurs from emerging economies worldwide. Aspiring innovators pitch their ideas and startups through videos voted on globally and reviewed by experts to determine the finalists who will attend the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES). Finalists also receive 3 months of one-to-one mentoring, and Tech-I winners receive funding to advance their innovations.

Taddy Hall Taddy Hall is a recognized authority in the fields of Marketing, Innovation, Branding, and Competitive Strategy. His articles on innovation have appeared in The Harvard Business Review (12/2005 and 1/2009), The Wall Street Journal, Ad Age, and CMO Magazine. Taddy is also co-author of The Online Advertising Playbook, published by J. Wiley in April, 2007. Over the last decade, Taddy has collaborated with HBS Professor and innovation authority, Clayton M. Christensen, on the publication of The Innovator’s Solution and Marketing Malpractice (HBR) as well as on the growth of a related consulting practice. Taddy and Prof. Christensen are currently working to deliver their unique tools and frameworks to executives in Emerging Markets. In 2011, he has led projects involving more than a dozen diverse companies in Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, and The Philippines. Taddy has worked actively with the Endeavor (www.endeavor.org) organization since 1997. A member of the Endeavor Global Advisory Board, Taddy advises Endeavor Entrepreneurs – a network of 600+ leaders – to help them build profitable growth companies. Taddy began his career in Venture Capital / Private Equity, working for Advent International both in the US (3 yrs.) and Latin America (2 yrs.). He transitioned from finance to operations, managing five venture backed businesses. Taddy also served as the Chief Strategy Officer for the Advertising Research Foundation (2003-2008) where he leveraged deep expertise in Media, Digital Technologies, and Research Methodologies to help senior executives succeed in challenging competitive contexts. Currently, Taddy works as SVP and global innovation expert for Nielsen, helping clients meet their goals for growth and innovation.

Agostinho Almeida Agostinho Almeida holds a degree in Biology, a PhD in Biomedical Sciences and an International MBA, having lived in three different countries (USA, Portugal and Colombia). He has over a decade of experience in executing and managing R&D at Portuguese and Colombian research institutes, with a strong focus on Life Sciences. Since 2011, he has been working with Colombian companies from different sectors, supporting them in Innovation Management, Business Development and Strategy. He was Director of Tech Transfer of a local triple helix institution leading university-industry-government relations and the development of a regional tech transfer model for Antioquia, Colombia. Also, he has co-founded tech-based Portuguese companies that operate in different industry sectors. Currently, he is an investment manager at Promotora, a Colombian venture capital fund manager, and an associate professor at the University of Eafit.

Max Green Max is an engineer with a passion for identifying strategies to translate early-stage innovations into successful products and services. He currently serves as a Project Director at the IC2 Institute, where he manages programs that teach practical, hands-on education to entrepreneurs and scientists around the world. He leverages his background in science, engineering, and business, which allow him to be uncommonly effective at technology-based opportunity analysis, product launch strategy, marketing / sales, and the negotiation of complex agreements. Before joining the IC2 Institute, Max worked at The University of Texas at Austin’s Office of Technology Commercialization, NASA’s Innovative Partnerships Program at Kennedy Space Center and at Applied Materials, Inc. He has established a deep understanding of the technology commercialization process, leading customer development efforts and negotiations to close more than 50 intellectual property license agreements. He also played a central role in establishing 10 startups at UT Austin, with efforts including early discovery of product-market fit, establishing initial revenue models, facilitating engagements with investors, entrepreneurs and strategic partners, and negotiating corporate agreements. Max holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and an M.S. in Technology Commercialization, both from The University of Texas at Austin.

Aprille Raabe Aprille Raabe joined the IC2 Institute as a Program Manager in 2015 after three years with the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Science and Technology Cooperation. During her time with the State Department, she fostered international science and technology relationships to encourage joint research, innovation, and economic growth with countries in Latin America, Europe, and Africa. A significant effort in her work was to engage the private sector and strengthen the links between basic research, innovation, and product development. One of Aprille’s key roles was to serve as the U.S. secretariat for the U.S.-Ireland Research and Development Partnership Steering Committee, which promotes joint research endeavors between the United States, Ireland, and Northern Ireland. Aprille began her career in Washington, D.C. with the late Senator Ted Stevens (AK), and served as his Staff Director and Chief Counsel on the Subcommittee on Disaster Recovery, Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. Prior to her position with the State Department, Aprille was Defense Counsel for Representative Don Young (AK). Aprille received her B.A. in Communication from Saint Mary’s College, Indiana and a Concentration in International Peace Studies from the University of Notre Dame. She received her J.D. from Tulane University Law School where she specialized in International and European Union law.

Sarah Staton Dr. Sarah J. R. Staton is an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science & Technology Policy Fellow in the Office of Science and Technology Cooperation in the Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs (OES). Dr. Staton works to promote science, technology, and innovation entrepreneurship through international collaboration and education with a focus on women and underrepresented groups. She came to the Department of State from the Naval Research Laboratory where she was a National Research Council (NRC) Postdoctoral Fellow. For her research she has been awarded the Fulbright Scholarship, the Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship, and has generated multiple pieces of patented IP. Dr. Staton earned her Ph.D. in bioanalytical chemistry from Arizona State University and her B.A. in biochemistry from William Jewell College.
