“The Art Scene” - by Bette Kosmolak Drop into the Studio B Gallery (2704 Dunsmuir) next time you are strolling Cumberland to see some extraordinary artworks by Meghann Rader and Jennifer Brant, two westcoasters and Emily Carr BFA grads. Studio B’s curator, Sonya Stastny, must have an excellent eye and fondness for art that is meticulously crafted because Brant and Rader both produce work that is painstakingly detailed. Brant is fascinated by swarms, flocks, geology, and cloud formations, and her repeating tiny stitches on hand-dyed linen evoke visions of swirling galaxies, planets hanging in a muted universe, or flocks of swarming birds. Rader’s works are exquisite paper construction. It takes close study to discern the details in Rader’s work and to see the layers she’s crafted to create a sense of depth. The work of both of these artists is truly breathtaking and worth a visit to Studio B where the show will continue for the next couple of months.

Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department

250-336-2531

Hello everyone, November is here and we are into our Burning Permits for yard waste cleanup and land clearing. You can apply for a permit from the Village office and then check the Burning index for North and Central Island to look at good venting days to burn according to the permit regulations. Most likely as you are reading this the burning in the forest will be done but if not, Hancock is planning to burn some of the bee hive piles around the village. This will lower the danger of these burning in the hot summer months where they could become a problem for the Fire department. I have also asked them to make a better fire break and clear some roads around our community forest of over grown alders this is for better access and escape if we get a Wildland Fire in this area. It will give the Fire Department a safety barrier and better access and a better chance to defend the timbered lands that we have south of the Village, the Community Forest. This is always a concern to us and as we plan for protecting those forest lands we will require different tools and good accessibility. Our forest lands are more populated every year and it seems the weather in our area is getting warmer and the ground much dryer too. The Fire Department’s looking at better defenses and protection of our forest land properties. I would also like to report on highway problems - MVI’s. In the last month we have seen a lot of Highway 19 Motor Vehicle Incidences. As we approach winter a lot of deer have been hit, and with drivers leaving the road to avoid wildlife we need to keep a close eye out for wildlife on the highway and in our village. Winter conditions just make things more difficult. As you may ready know Cumberland Fire protects a long stretch of the highway south down to the Tsable River bridge and often beyond that if we are required. There are a lot of MVI’s in bad weather. Here are a few tips: slow down for weather conditions and avoid using cruise control. There are places that are wet spots and ice spots on the highway that can cause driving problems. There are signs marking these places to pay attention to for your own safety. Accidents happen often out there and I’d just like to give you the heads up on things we see on the highway so you can drive safely. Also, I’d like to bring to your attention a program called Block Watch. This program is to help protect your property and your neighbor’s property. An organized way of looking out for each other’s interest and protecting your Block or Zone. There is a lot of good information on security and safety. To find out more you can call Deb 250-338-5966 or email [email protected]. She is our local representative or look up the website www.blockwatch.com to learn more. Please check your Fire Safety Plan, practice getting your family up and out of danger. Their lives could depend on your efforts. Our Fire Department is still looking for Firefighters to train. Daytime personnel would be a priority as this is where the department needs help. ~ Thanks, Cumberland Fire Chief Mike Wlliamson

Life has a funny way of teaching us. This past year, life taught me about balance. When I first entertained the idea of starting a yoga studio it was always with the intrinsically known, core idea that I couldn’t add something to my life without taking something away - in exactly a balance sheet sort of way. So I spent some time taking an inventory and made my life streamlined and did only the things that gave me great joy so that I could focus my energies into living those remaining things well. And with all the various balls I had in the air; juggling teaching, family, school commitments, running the studio and a personal crisis, I managed life with surprising grace and ease. For the briefest of moments, I thought I had figured it out and had achieved that often talked of and elusive objective of a “life of Balance”. But, as is always the case, the universe was working on a back door way, the best way, to humble me so that I could learn the lesson of balance in a way that would stick while I was busy looking the other way. And so, the universe knocked me out of headstand. Yes , headstand. I’ve been practicing headstand for nearly 20 years. I could hold and relax into it for many minutes at a time. I felt comfortable adding variations to it and felt strong and proficient at it. And then, I just wasn’t. After teaching for only a few short months, I suddenly had lost the nerve to do a free standing headstand. The fear of falling backwards overtook me as though the ground was moving beneath me. It was frustrating and embarrassing and didn’t fit with my plan! And, as with most worthy lessons, the universe also handed me the solution. In teaching newcomers to take the baby steps to overcome their fear of inversions, I was essentially starting from scratch with myself. I stepped back and examined headstands from the perspective of a beginner and dove into the various ways of approaching it, fully supporting myself and in doing so built the courage and the emotional muscle that allowed me to stand alone again. The parallels were everywhere in my life, lining up to show me how to deconstruct and reconstruct and centre myself even when things were upside down. My lesson came to me packaged as a relatively small issue. My life wasn’t hanging in the balance of whether I could do headstand in the middle of the room or not. But I understood what it represented in the larger picture of my practice and my life and so, I enter this next season grateful for the centring I’ve gained from all my students’ teachings.
