SLEEP Tomorrow children will wear their pyjamas to school . In class the children will do some lessons about the importance of sleep. Children are to wear their sport shoes. This is a really good opportunity for families to review bedtimes for their children. The Australian Centre for Education in Sleep (ACES) suggests the following as a guide: ● Primary school: 10-12 hours per day ● High school adolescents: 8-10 hours per day ● Adults: 7-9 hours per day. 30 Collins St, Annandale NSW 2038 T (02) 9519 3974 F (02) 9519 6357 E

Associate Professor Harriet Hiscock, paediatrician and sleep researcher has some great tips for families: Golden rules for kids’ sleep ● Establish a bedtime routine - so they know what to expect and have time to wind down. ● Keep bedtime consistent (within 30 mins), even on the weekends - big variations can disrupt their body clock and undo all your good work. ● Make sure they fall asleep in their bed - snoozing off on the couch or in front of the TV can affect their routine and make them less likely to want to sleep alone. ● Remove all TVs, computers and mobile devices from their bedroom - the light stimulation alone will make it harder for them to settle down. ● Avoid caffeinated foods and drinks after 3pm - caffeine is a stimulant which is likely to keep young bodies awake. ● Have a wind-down period yourself - show kids that a bedtime routine is important for the whole family. When your child won’t stay in bed ● Limit the number of times they can come out of the bedroom (one or two times works well). ● Reward them for complying with the rules (eg a stamp or sticker in the morning). ● If they keep coming out, take them back to their room with minimal fuss or arguments. When your child won’t fall asleep alone ● Identify who (eg mum or dad) or what (eg music) they need in order to fall asleep and return to sleep if they wake in the night. ● If it’s you, slowly withdraw from the bedroom in stages (also known as ‘camping out’). ● If it’s something else (such as music), gradually reduce the amount of time the child spends with it before going to sleep. https://www.kidsmatter.edu.au/node/3695 30 Collins St, Annandale NSW 2038 T (02) 9519 3974 F (02) 9519 6357 E

HISTORY EXHIBITION YEAR 4 Throughout Term 2 Year 4 were working extremely hard on their History Inquiry Projects. Students had to select a celebration from around the world, design a question of inquiry, research, synthesise their information and create a product to present their findings. At the end of Term 2 we invited our Year 4 parents in to share in our History Exhibition. Students were required to know their content well so they could engage with the parents and answer a variety of questions around their topic. Mrs Death and Mrs Mugavero were very proud of their achievements! Well done Year 4!

NOTE FROM FAMILY EDUCATOR Welcome back! Our Family Mass for this term will be at the end of Week 3 - Saturday 5th August at 5.30pm. It will be a celebration of the Transfiguration of Our Lord - where Jesus ascended Mount Tabor with Peter, James and John and through a 'heavenly' experience they learn that Jesus is indeed someone very special. It is an ideal Mass for us to celebrate together. In planning for the Mass I came across this lovely reflection: Sunday Mass is meant to be a weekly mountaintop experience for us where we hear God call us by name and where we feel re-energised. The God of Mount Tabor is not interested in each of us feeling isolated as we fulfil the letter of a legal code. He wants all of us to have hearts that listen to the Gospel of love so that we can gain the power to transform the world through our daily lives. The Mass will be led by Years 3 and 4. I hope you can all join us. Given the short time-frame and a number of days I have out in training in the next couple of weeks, it would be great if Years 3 and 4 could return their notes as soon as possible. In preparing information sheets for our Sleep Awareness Day tomorrow, I rediscovered the Raising Children website (www.raisingchildren.net.au). It is a wealth of information, offering up-to-date, research-based material on more than 800 topics spanning child development, behaviour, health, nutrition and fitness, play and learning, connecting and communicating, school and education, entertainment and technology, sleep and safety. It covers from pregnancy to parenting children aged up to 18 and includes some information on children with special needs. Some children were very busy creating lovely long trails of French Knitting over the holidays. It's not too late if your child would like to take this up. Tell them to come and see me and I will get them started. It's very easy. The group will aim to get together once a week on Wednesdays through this term. 30 Collins St, Annandale NSW 2038 T (02) 9519 3974 F (02) 9519 6357 E

PARISH FETE - SQUEEZE AND FREEZE Lemon tree, very pretty, and the lemon flower is sweet But the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat Sorry, couldn't resist. I came across Peter Paul & Mary's Greatest Hits on vinyl during the holidays! But I do realise I am showing my age and that many of you are too young to have any idea what I am on about! Anyway, on to the topic.....the Lemonade Stall at the Parish Fete. This was hugely popular at the last fete and will be held again. We are asking anyone with a lemon tree (or a friend with a lemon tree) to save excess lemons, juice them and freeze the juice in snap lock bags to be made into lemonade in a few months time. Or, with lemons in season, if you come across a bargain, you may even wish to buy a kilo and freeze for us. Thank you in advance! Leonie Duck SPORT TERM 3 During Term 3 the children will have sport on Thursdays with Mrs Melissa Withers. On Fridays we will have Sports in Schools return to St Brendan’s. Sports uniform should be worn on both days. SOME SEMESTER TWO REMINDERS APPLICATION FOR LEAVE FROM ATTENDANCE AT SCHOOL Parents must carefully consider if it is in their child’s best interest to take them on a holiday during school time. Parents need to apply for leave from school from the Principal for absences such as holidays during school time and exceptional domestic circumstances. This permission cannot be gained retrospectively. If leave if required for less than 10 days a letter should be sent to the Principal requesting leave. Should leave be required for a period of longer than 10 days a form must be obtained from the office and sent to the Principal who will then provide a Certificate of Leave. The Principal is able to approve less than 100 days in a calendar year. Applications for more than 100 days leave are sent to Sydney Catholic Schools. 30 Collins St, Annandale NSW 2038 T (02) 9519 3974 F (02) 9519 6357 E

ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL Your child needs to attend school regularly so that all aspects of work can be covered. If, however, through illness or other reasonable cause, your child is absent a written explanation must be provided within seven days of their return. We ask that parents contact the office if your child is absent for more than one day of school. The office staff will need to follow up on unexplained absences. PLAYGROUND SUPERVISION Playground supervision starts at 8.25am. Parents are asked not to send their children to school before this time. All children are to arrive between 8.25am and 8.45am for classes to commence promptly at 8.50am. Children in Year 1 and Year 2 are not to enter the building without a parent. Bags may be left on the playground. Tennis Instructors provide tuition for the students engaged in tennis lessons on a Thursday morning from 7.30am. No other children should be on the playground until supervision begins at 8.25am. SUPERVISION AFTER SCHOOL Supervision concludes at 3.15pm. Parents are asked to supervise their own children on the playground after 3.15pm. The children must follow the school rules when they play on our school playground under the supervision of their parents. ● No games involving tackling, wrestling, pulling etc that may cause injury to another person. ● Active games are not to be played in the passive areas ie the paved area at the front of the school and behind the net near the library ● Children are not to play in the out of bounds area ie. behind the gates, in the Kindergarten area or in the toilets ● Children are not to climb on the padding around the poles ● Children are not to climb on the wall 30 Collins St, Annandale NSW 2038 T (02) 9519 3974 F (02) 9519 6357 E

DROP OFF and PICK UP ZONE The school has a Drop-off and Pick-up Zone in Trafalgar Street to facilitate a more efficient process in the safe arrival and departure of our students. A staff member supervises the Pick Up Zone in the afternoon. Students must move to this area immediately so cars are not kept waiting. Parents and Carers are to follow the rules of the Drop-off and Pick-up Zone. Please let anyone else who may use the car pick up service to follow these procedures. SAFETY TIPS FOR DRIVERS Always drop off or pick up your child from the designated zone and follow the school's procedures. Drivers should remain in their vehicles at all times in the Drop-off and Pick-up zone. Make sure children use the rear footpath side door to get in and out of the car. Make sure the handbrake is applied when the vehicle is stationery. Always park legally. Avoid dangerous manoeuvers such as U-turns and three-point turns. SAFETY TIPS FOR STUDENTS Use the rear footpath side door to get in and out of the car. Stay buckled up until the vehicle has stopped in the Drop-off and pick-up area. Make sure your school bag and other items are in a safe position, such as on the floor. Be ready to get out of the vehicle with your belongings when the car has stopped. PHOTOGRAPHING AT SCHOOL We recognise that parents and carers enjoy photographing and recording the progress of their child at school and on school activities. We recognise that many of you like to share these personal memories online and on social media. We ask for your cooperation and care concerning the use and distribution of photographs of other children at Sydney Catholic Schools. Some families have very real legal and safety issues which could put a child at risk if an image is made public online. More generally, it is respectful of the privacy of other members of the school community to ask permission before posting an image online. Even if your social media settings are private, it is easy for images to become public, particularly if they are tagged or shared by others. 30 Collins St, Annandale NSW 2038 T (02) 9519 3974 F (02) 9519 6357 E

BEST PRACTICE GUIDELINES The following best practice guidelines have been adopted by SCS to keep our students and school communities safe, and to ensure respectful practices concerning the use of social media. When taking photographs or recordings at school, or at school events, and your images include other identifiable persons, please follow these guidelines: • crop out other students or seek the permission of the student, or (for students under 16) his or her parent/carer, before posting online • do not tag or name the person without permission • if a parent or carer requests that you do not circulate an image of their child to others, please comply with the request • please seek the permission of our staff to photograph or record their activities at school. Photography of staff presenting or receiving awards is permitted. PARENT CHARTER SYDNEY CATHOLIC SCHOOLS Parent Charter Sydney Catholic Schools The Parent Charter for Sydney Catholic Schools provides parents with the principles and expectations that underpin the partnership between parents and schools. It is an important touchstone for all partners in Catholic education, to help build school communities based on the enduring values of faith, hope and love. Included in this document ● Teachers are the first point of contact. ● To discuss your child’s learning or experiences at school, parents are asked to make an appointment to meet with the appropriate teacher so these issues can be discussed constructively. ● If the appropriate teacher cannot resolve the issue or concern, members of the school leadership team are also available to talk with parents. ● Parents are asked to make an appointment to meet at a mutually convenient time. ● Parents should not approach other students or parents to clarify any issues or concerns involving their own child. All matters should be discussed with the appropriate teacher who can then discuss the matter with the relevant staff and students. 30 Collins St, Annandale NSW 2038 T (02) 9519 3974 F (02) 9519 6357 E

● There will be times when parents disagree with a school decision or process. These matters are best addressed within a framework of dignity, respect and truth. Parents are encouraged to refer to the Resolution of Complaints policy for guidelines on the process of making and resolving a complaint. In the rare circumstance where there are consistent and/or proven breaches of the Parent Charter, as determined by the Principal, and where necessary, and in consultation with the Regional Consultant, schools have the right to implement certain actions, which may include: • an informal meeting between the parent/s with the Principal or a member of the school leadership team to remind parents about the expectations outlined in the Parent Charter • a formal meeting between the parent/s and with the Principal and/or a member of the school leadership team • a formal escalation of the matter to the Sydney Catholic Schools office where parents may be required to meet with staff and/or independent consultants • exclusion of a parent from the school under the Inclosed Lands Protection Act 1901 (NSW) • in the case of unlawful or aggressive behaviour, bullying or intimidation of school staff, the matter may be referred to the NSW Police or other appropriate agencies.
