Rep. Lipinski and Senator Kirk hold listening session on VA issues

Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL-3) and U.S. Senator Mark Kirk came together recently to give veterans with experience in the VA healthcare system an opportunity to share their concerns. For over two hours at VFW

Post 2378 in Berwyn, the legislators listened as heroic veterans of all ages, current and former VA employees, and others shared their personal stories of frustration with government bureaucracy and the general level of

care they have received from the VA. Since the troubling reports started surfacing about secret waiting lists several weeks ago, both Lipinski and Kirk have led the charge on this issue. “The mistreatment of

veterans has been shameful,” said Lipinski. “Last week I regretfully called for the resignation of Secretary Shinseki. He is an American hero, but considering what had occurred under his watch, a change in leadership was necessary. But General Shinseki’s resignation is not the end; it is only the first step in cleaning up the VA and holding individuals accountable. A comprehensive review and reform of the entire VA operation must begin immediately and not end

Caleb Schmidt is Valedictorian of Nathan Hale

Father’s Day

Profile

by Cleatus (Cherokee Lee) Murdaugh With Father’s Day around the corner It will be here pretty soon And this year it will come on a Sunday Which is the 15th of June.

“Meet Your Neighbor”

To some this may not mean anything For it is not a special day But they will like to be remembered In the loving kind of way.

Mark and Theresa Schmidt, parents of Caleb Evan Schmidt, proudly announce that their son Caleb has earned the honor of Valedictorian of the 2014 Class of Nathan Hale School. He has been continuously enrolled at Hale School from kin-

What Do You Do For A Living? Director of Leadership at St. Laurence H.S. As A Graduate Of St. Laurence, What Made You Decide To Come Back? My four years as a student at St. Laurence were awesome! I met some amazing people that are still my best friends today. After college I spent seven years coaching baseball and football here at STL and the environment I felt as a student was still evident. The family atmosphere, the people here and the vision and direction St. Laurence is heading are the reasons I decided to return. How Has Your Previous Experience Prepared You For This Position? As a PE teacher and coach for the past 8 years I have had an opportunity to work with many students and athletes of different abilities, experiences and backgrounds. As an educator and coach, my job was to take a group of individuals and get them to work together as a cohesive group toward a common goal. Our specific goal at St. Laurence is to have students Leave as a Leader. What Do You Hope To Accomplish As The Director Of Leadership?   I hope to instill in the students qualities that are essential to leadership, such as: character, positivity, courage, humility, integrity, empathy, spirituality, etc. I want our students to leave St. Laurence with the essence of what leadership comes down to: speaking up, standing up or acting upon something in which you believe. What Do You See As The Value Of The Leadership Program For St. Laurence Students? Leadership is a quality that is highly regarded and sought after in all walks of life. It comes in different shapes and sizes and is seemingly difficult to achieve. It is often thought that a great leader is one who is loud and boisterous or an individual who is rich and powerful. In fact, we see acts of leadership more often than we think, but do not always know what to look for. Our students will leave with the tools to recognize situations that require leadership and be able to apply the skills they have learned to accomplish the desired goal. Anything Else? Former Director of Leadership Mr. Scott, who has been a well-respected member of the St. Laurence family for many years, has left some big shoes to fill. Mr. Scott has built a successful leadership program and paved the way for its sustained success. I wish him luck and happiness in his future endeavors and thank him for his service, commitment and dedication. St. Laurence High School is located at 5556 W. 77th St. in Burbank. For more information about St. Laurence, visit www.stlaurence.com. To schedule a visit for any day of the year, contact the Admissions Office at 708.458.6900, x252.

dergarten through eighth grade and has had many wonderful teachers along the way. Caleb is also a First Class Boy Scout with Troop 1439 of St. Symphorosa Parish. Caleb has been accepted to Walter Payton College Prep High School. He has quite an artistic flare and his art work was recently chosen for display at the Beverly Arts Center. He also received awards for the University of Illinois Economic Poster Contest. Pictured: Caleb with Grandpa Don Streveler

Lend Me Your Ear... Crime Report Courtesy of swchicagopost.com by Dan O’Bookum Editor’s note: We present this police blotter news as a public service, courtesy of our friends at swchicagopost.com. May all of us also remember that a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. *** A 94-year-old Vittum Park woman told police she was robbed by a man and woman who pushed their way into her home near 48th and La Crosse at 2:30 p.m. on June 3. As she answered their knock at her front door, they shoved their way past her, saying, “We’re going to show you what we’re going to do.” The female offender took the victim into the kitchen and attempted to keep her busy by requesting two glasses of ice water. When the victim tried to leave the kitchen to see

what the man was doing, the woman forced her back in the kitchen. A short time later, the man rang a bell, and his accomplice fled the kitchen with two glasses of ice water and two bananas. Greetings and salutations, readers of mine! It’s the no respect thing happening - I have once again been ungratiously bounced from my “forever” Page 2 position. Toots was recently talking to a friend of hers and we were reminiscencing on “the good ol’ days”. What the heck constitutes these ‘good ol’ days’? Well, in Toots’ humble opinion, the ‘good ol’ days’ are today. And tomorrow will be another ‘good ol’ day’. Every day of your life should be a ‘good ol’ day’. Toots is a self-proclaimed quote queen! She constantly hears quotes that she likes, but unfortunately can never repeat them exactly. But there is one that goes something like this, “Tomorrow is the Today that we worried about Yesterday”. So Toots says to her

friend, “I think I would like to be about seventeen again.” You must realize that Toots has already been seventeen a time or two. Mentally anyhow. My friend says, “I wouldn’t like seventeen, but thirty would be good.” Okay, Toots thinks thirty is good too! Toots likes the Peter Pan way of thinking... I won’t grow up, I’ll never grow up. Now when Toots says that - it doesn’t mean that she gives up all responsibilities and goes nuts. No, that’s not the case. It’s just that Toots is all in for the fun of a person not grown up yet. Lead her to the carnival and watch her ride the roller coaster about 82 times. Check her out at the dunk tank. If fun is to be had, Toots will always find it. Life is way too short and Toots firmly believes that each day should be

the “best day” and “best days” include lots of fun, lots of adventure and lots and lots of laughter. Live today as if you will die tomorrow. What the heck are you waiting for? But once again...do it sensibly. If you get all crazy, that could be your finale. Life is not a rehearsal. There is never a guarantee of the future. So don’t sit back and think about what you will do in a year or two. Do it now! Enjoy the time you’re given. Okay, Madame Editor. Good enough for my ‘lesson’ of the week? Can I continue on with this fine organization? You Madame Editor, should pay attention to the ‘lessons’. You need to lighten up a bit. Hows ‘bout you and Toots go out for a night on the town? Today is the first day of the rest of your life. Get out and live it. Work hard, play harder. Take a break from the daily grind and do something fun. And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance, I hope you dance. Well that about wraps it up from the ‘quote queen’ for this week. Go play!!! ‘til next week... Toots Malone
