COURSE DESCRIPTION This course covers special relativity, Planck’s Radiation Law, elements of quantum mechanics, atomic and molecular structures, spectra, the atomic nucleus, nuclear reactions, and an introduction to elementary particles

COURSE PREREQUISITES •

PHY 1963 Physics for Scientists and Engineers II and MAT 2214 Calculus III completed with a grade of C or better, or consent of instructor.

Modern Physics, 2nd ed., by Randy Harris, Addison-Wesley Publishing

COURSE REQUIREMENTS IMPORTANT: This is a fast-paced course covering roughly one chapter per week. Students are expected to read at least 2 chapters in advance to better assimilate the material and be in a position to participate by asking pertinent questions in class. As an essential part of this course learning process in-class participation in discussions of the subject matter is a must. Homework/Assignment: Groups of 4-5 students will be formed. Homework problems will be assigned and the solutions posted in blackboard. For each assignment each group will turn-in one answer sheet. All the assignments will be graded based on the group’s work. Each group will write/sign a contract defining how the group will operate for the homeworks. Late homework policy: Late homework is worth ¼ compared to homework turned-in on time. If they are returned 10 days past the due date, then it is an automatic zero.

GRADING The final course grade will be based on the following scale: A = 90–100

B = 80–89

15%

C = 70–79

D = 60–69

F = 0–59

Homework assignments (lowest grade will be dropped)

Participation 15% Active participation in class Four exams will be given during the semester. Each exam will be chosen Average grade 70% (4 exams) from the problems given as homework. Total / 100% Final Grade
