ADMISSION

A person may use the library apon presentation of a valid University I.D card or Library card. With the exception of short term readers admitted on day passes. Part time students are required to pay a fee of Kshs 2000/= per academic year in order to access library services. 2. REGISTRATION (a) Persons who wish to use the Library must be registered as a member (b) All persons registered as Technical University of Kenya are required to abide by the Library regulations. (c) The Librarian may suspend from use of the Library any person breaking these Library regulations. (d) Users must ensure that the information given on the Registration form is accurate. 3. DISCIPLINE (a) Order and silence must be maintained at all times in the library (b) Eating, drinking, sleeping and abusing library furniture or materials in the Library is prohibited (c) Briefcases, bags, overcoats, hats, umbrellas, etc. must be kept in the cloak room (d) All persons entering the Library must show their university I.D card (e) All persons leaving the Library must show all their documents/hand luggage to the security staff at the exit. (f) Stealing or attempting to steal a Library document or any of the Library property is an offence, which will require the offender to purchase TWO copies of the same bool 2

(g) Valuable items should not be left at the baggage area. (h) Mobile phones and any valuable items should not be left lying arround on reading tables. Any user leaving such valuables unattended does so at thei own risk and the library shal not be liable for such loss (i) Readers must dress and behave in a manner that will cause neither offence nor damage e.g. removal of dresses placing feet on furniture, e.t.c (j) Strict discipline must be maintained in the library,indiscipline may lead to displinary action and the library privileges may be withdrawn. (k) Readers are requested not to reserve seats when they know they will be absent for more than 15 minutes. (l) Readers may not use, or allow to be used, any part of the library for any purpose other than research or quiet private study without permission from the librarian incharge. Lecturers should not use any part of the library for teaching unless prior permission has been obtained from the university librarian. (m) Library staff are empowered to stop any activity in the Library which they consider prejudicial to the safety, well-being, or security of readers or Library staff or to the preservation of the collections. 4. BORROWING (a) Borrowing is resticted to registerd mmembers (b) The college ID must be produced when borrowing and returning items. (c) Library materials are not to be taken out of the Library unless they are issued at the appropriate point. (d) Loaned items may not be transferred from one borrower to another but must be returned to the Library for re-issuing. (e) Certain materials e.g. Projects shall not be borrowed for use outside the Library. (f) The loan period for students shall be two days for short loan and 14 days for normal circulation, whereas the teaching and non-teaching staff shall borrow short loan books for 14 days and 1 month for normal circulation. (g) The Librarian may permit other persons to borrow two books for purpose of special study upon such conditions and for such period as may seem appropriate in each case. Applications for these purposes should be made to the Librarian. (h) Readers are responsible for material issued to them until they have returned it in accordance with library procedures, and must at all times protect material issued to them and must not damage it or expose it to hazardous conditions. (i) No book shall be borrowed from the Library on any day less than fifteen minutes before the time of closing. (j) When books are issued users should check the pages of the issued book and if pages are found missing, they should report the same to the librarian before leaving the counter. On returning the books if pages are found missing then the last borrower of the book shall be held accounterble for the missing pages and shall accordingly be fined. (k) Any material on loan may be recaled if: it is already overdue, there is an ergent need of the book and library is conducting its annual inventory. (l) Reference, special collection and reserve book should not be borrowed outside the library.

5. FINES & PAYMENT FOR LOST BOOKS (a) Any borrower, who fails to return or renew a book on the date due, shall be charged a fine of TEN shillings per day for one month. There after the book will be assumed lost and the user will be required to purchase a new copy of the same book plus the overdue fine accumulated. (Sundays and Public Holidays are included in calculating the fines charged). (b) Users will be held responsible for any damage, or loss of, a book while in their possession and will be required to purchase a replacement of the same book. (c) All Library users are requested to return to the Library any books that they find misplaced. (d) The right to borrow may be withdrawn until all books have been returned and any outstanding fines have been paid. (e) Incase a user looses a book he/she should first report to the library and he/she will be given a grace period of one month to replace the book with the current edition of the same copy. 6. CARE OF LIBRARY BOOKS AND/OR PROPERTY (a) Users are responsible for checking that the books they borrow are not damaged before they are borrowed, otherwise they will be held responsible for the damage and will be charged. (b) Any defect in, or damage to a book should be reported to the Circulation Librarian on duty. (c) The marking, defacing or mutilation of any books is strictly forbidden. (d) Willful damage of the Library property will be paid for by the person responsible. 7. CLEARANCE It is a requirement of Technical University of Kenya that all registered members of the Library must clear with the Librarian at the expiry of their membership. (This includes payment of lost books and overdue fines). 8. EXCLUSION FROM USE OF THE LIBRARY The Library Advisory Committee shall have power to suspend or to exclude from use of the Library any person who persistently disregards the Library rules and regulations. 9. GENERAL INFORMATION (a) Library books removed from shelves should be left on the desk to be collected by Library staff for re-shelving. (b) Readers must not reserve seats by leaving personal items on them. Library staff will remove such items. (c) Library staff are charged with the duty of giving service to users and to also ensure that Library rules and regulations are observed for the mutual benefit of the entire community. (d) The Librarian will be glad to assist in any problems that cannot be solved by other Library staff. (e) A suggestion box is available at the entrance and readers are welcome to make suggestions. It is opened on a weekly basis by the Librarian. (f) No person shall enter the Library less than fifteen minutes before the time of closing. 4

(g) The Library reserves the right to inspect all bags, purses, briefcases, etc., for Library materials. (h) The Library reserves the right to limit the number of individuals who may sit together. There is a limit of one person per chair. (i) Books borrowed should not be brought to the library untill when the book is due or when you intend to return the books. 10. COPYRIGHT There is a copyright protection law on most of the Library materials. Deliberate infringement on this law e.g., unauthorized copying and especially of projects is a criminal offence. However, permissible copying limits of not more than one third of a book shall be made for academic purposes. All users of Library materials must observe these li mits whether within Technical University of Kenya Library premises or elsewhere. Reproduction or photocopying of thesis, desertations and restricted materials is strictly prohibited unless permission is granted by the originating office or individual. The use of restricted materials shall be governed bby specific regularions that may have been imposed by originating office or individual. 11. OTHER SERVICES TO MEMBERS RESERVATION The Library may reserve a particular title requested for by a member and hold it for two days. ACQUISITION Books, journals and audio-visual materials suggested by members may be considered for purchase subject to their relevance and availability of funds. BOOK DISPLAY This is carried out after purchase of new books.

NB: The University librarian may amend the library rules and regulations as and when neccessary.
