This is simply a chance for friends to spend time together and support each other. Groups will be between four and eight teens and the restaurant nights will be on: Wednesday, 7/18 at 7pm Wednesday, 8/22 at 630pm Please contact Brad at least one week before the date if you and a couple friends would like to RSVP for a dinner. Then we will decide on a restaurant.

ATTENTION PARISHONERS Summer Changes On Fridays our office will close at 2:00pm from July 6th thru Labor Day
SEEKING LECTORS FOR MASS ! Are you a teen who has received the sacrament of Confirmation? We would love to train you to serve as a lector for Mass at St. Athanasius! The role of lectors is to proclaim one or all of the Bible readings during Mass, which helps us to better worship God, learn His role in our lives, and prepare to receive Jesus in the Eucharist. If you have received Confirmation, you are eligible to serve our parish community in this way. We are hoping to train at least two or three teens by the end of the summer to start serving during Mass in the fall. Please contact or speak with Brad if you have any interest or questions about becoming a lector or teaching Rel Ed !

F ROM THE PASTOR When I retired from the Navy and arrived at St. Agnes Parish, 11 years ago, my plan was to retire at about 75 years old. I never dreamed that I would become the Administrator of St. Athanasius Parish as well as Pastor of St. Agnes Parish! There is an old saying, “we make plans and God laughs” To be honest, I’m still a little overwhelmed with the new responsibilities that I now have for both parishes. If you remember on the Feast of Corpus Christi I asked Fr. Darin to but a note in your bulletin and here is an excerpt, “As we just celebrated Pentecost, our way forward is very clear, if we all are open to and walk in accordance with the Holy Spirit, we will be successful. It will be a very interesting summer, lots of prayers, lots of work, patience and understanding will be needed from both parishes of the Reading Catholic community as we navigate the changes before us.” I believe that today’s Gospel tells us all we need to know to make the Collaborative a success, FAITH. As Jesus said to the woman afflicted with hemorrhages, “Daughter your faith has saved you!” The faith shown by the synagogue official in asking Jesus to heal his dying daughter was rewarded by her being healed. If we walk forward in faith, trusting in the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we will succeed. I firmly believe it. It won’t be easy but it is God’s work, what we do is Holy Work. It is my hope that together we can do great things as we approach Collaboration. As you must know there are only 2 priests assigned to Reading as opposed to the 3 we have had for the last 20 years or so. There are a couple of priests who will be available but they are not assigned here and not always available. For most of us change is part of our daily lives but what we will be going through is TRANSITION, which is not easy. There will be a lot of grieving over the changes that will effect both parishes but there will be new growth and hope. I would recommend that you check out a wonderful website, www.amazingparish.org , click on RESOURCES and to a great video, MANAGING TRANSITION. I have found it very helpful and full of hope. Another website that you might find very helpful in finding out more about Collaboratives is: www.disciplesinmission.com. The Office of Disciples in Mission, Archdiocese of Boston, is doing a wonderful job in helping parishes move into collaboration. Over the next few weeks I will be meeting with the Parish Pastoral Council and the Finance Council to talk about the future and we will also begin having joint meetings with the Councils of both parishes. Sometime in the next few months we will have a Town Meeting for both parishes to talk about the Collaborative. I promise to keep you informed, lets pray for each other, In Christ, Very Rev. Stephen B. Rock, VF Administrator 5

St. Agnes Parish and our collaborative partner, St. Athanasius, will begin as a collaborative in June of 2019. The Collaborative is part of the Archdiocese Pastoral Plan, “Disciples in Mission”. Learn more at the website: https://disciplesinmission.com

Q. I have heard that once the Collaborative forms, all of the current staff has to resign. Is that true? R. That is not true. The Pastor has to resign, but usually, the resignation doesn’t take effect until June, when the Collaborative is inaugurated. And the current pastor may apply to be the pastor of the collaborative if he wishes. The Parochial Vicars and Deacons are, as always, open to reassignment. Parish Councils and Finance Councils always are reformed when a new Pastor comes. But the staffs do not have to resign. That being said, we need, going forward, to choose our Team for our mission, and not our mission for our Team. It will certainly be necessary, in most collaboratives, for some staffing changes.
