From the Principal’s Desk PROUD to be a Crimson Bear!

What a great month it was for our Crimson Bears! We are adding to our State Championship celebrations with our Swim/Dive team bringing home a number of wins. Kudos to Sarah Mertz (200 Medley Relay), Mia Ruffin (200 Medley Relay, 200 Individual Medley, 100 Breaststroke, 400 Freestyle Relay), Gabi Kito (200 Medley Relay, 400 Freestyle Relay), Andyn MulgrewTruitt (200 Medley Relay, 400 Freestyle Relay) and Cameron Howard (400 Freestyle Relay). Also a quick shout-out to JDHS Volleyball for winning our region and securing a berth in the State tournament! Thank you to all of the parents and adult advocates who attended our Parent Teacher Conferences. We recognize that it is not always easy to tailor your schedules to ours, and that the process of waiting in line for individual teachers can be frustrating. Hopefully your time spent was worth it for both you and your student – we know it makes a difference in our continuing partnership supporting teaching and learning at JDHS. If you missed conferences or feel as though you need a follow-up please call or email individual teachers or your child’s school counselor. Finally, we would like to share a quick note about the diverse and accepting student body here at JDHS. It can be so easy not to slow down and say that we appreciate JDHS and all of the unique students and families that make us who we are. As a school community we are steadfast in our appreciation of diversity and acceptance of differences, and we try to be intentional in recognizing that we each contribute to our school in individual ways. What a treat it was for students and faculty to return from a long weekend and find bright colored sticky notes on EVERY locker and every classroom door. Sayings to students, from students, reminded us that kindness and acceptance matter here at JDHS. We saw notes such as, “You can do anything!”, “You are like sunshine on a rainy day.” and “You make someone’s smile bigger.” Thank you to the National Honor Society for brightening our hallways, and reminding us that we are all proud to be Crimson Bears.

The City and Borough of Juneau School District complies with all federal and State rules and regulations and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender, disability, or age in its programs and activities, and provides equal access to the Boy Scouts and other designated youth groups. This holds true for all students who are interested in participating in education programs and/or extracurricular school activities. Inquiries regarding compliance and/or grievance procedures may be directed to the District’s Title IX Coordinator and Section 504/ADA Coordinator Bridget Weiss, Director of Student Services 780-2050 [email protected] 10014 Crazy Horse Dr. Juneau, AK 99801

www.jdhs.juneauschools.org ATTENDANCE MATTERS It has been my blessing to be at Juneau-Douglas High School for the past 10 years. I will retire on Dec. 9 to help with a special needs grandson. I will deeply miss my Crimson Bear family. I am grateful for the many students, staff, and parents who have enriched my life. Thank you! In the next months as my replacement settles in, please be sure to communicate clearly and be patient.  Please be sure to excuse your child in a timely manner if he/she is out by either calling 523-1623 or using the Absence Notification form on the JDHS homepage or responding to the automatic attendance emails.  Your email sent to my address will be forwarded to my replacement, but please update your address book with the new contact information when it is announced.  Give your child’s full name, your name, your relationship to the student, and your contact information.  Clarify if your student will be gone for the day or approximate times if they will come late or leave early. Let us know if your student will return after appointments.  We need the reason your student is out in order to know what code to enter.  Please be sure to email or call at least 30 minutes in advance if you need to pick up your student to prevent the last minute rush. Students can meet you out front when the advanced notice is given.  Please remind your student to sign in and to sign out. This makes such a huge difference in tracking students.  If your student believes they were marked absent in error, please remind them to pick up an attendance correction form, have it signed by the teacher, and return it to the attendance office.  It is a good practice to check PowerSchool with your child at least weekly and correct any errors you may see promptly.  We have finals the last three days of the semester: Dec. 20, 21, and 22. We hope all students will be here, but if you are traveling--or for any other pre-planned family absence---please send a note or email to start a family-planned process well in advance. Thank you again for sharing your students with me. Thank you for being gracious and patient. I will forever be grateful for my time at JDHS. Best to you and your families, Gaye Willis

ART NEWS 1.) Art Club has been working hard to produce wares to sell at Public Market the weekend after Thanksgiving, November 25, 26, and 27. All proceeds support travel to Art Fest in Petersburg, April 2017, and other Art-related student opportunities. This year we'll feature Brianna Frisby's beautiful beading, Andy Anderson's digital artwork, and Capri Potter's animal drawings alongside many other talented art-club productions and student pottery. Proceeds go toward travel to Art Fest in Petersburg in April, and sometimes we have enough left over to help fund JDHS Art program. Help support JuneauDouglas Art and do your Christmas shopping at the JAHC this weekend! 2.) The State Farm office across from IGA downtown is hosting a JDHS Student Art Show this coming First Friday! Stop by after school on December 4th and see what's been selected to represent us! December First Friday is always an exciting community event, and this is a great way to start the festive amble around town. Enjoy free nibbles & sips, take in carolers, and check out all the fresh arts and crafts for sale for the holidays! See you there! 3.) Every semester Ms. Ridgway host a student art show as the Final in her art classes. The show will open for your enjoyment. Wednesday, December 14 from 1:45pm to 5pm and again Thursday, 8:45-5:00, and Friday from 10AM - 6pm. Come see what we've been doing all semester in Ceramics, Drawing 1 and Advanced Studio classes. Don't forget to stop at the office for a Visitor's Pass during school hours. Also, you can always check out our latest works in the Common's Display cases. Thank you!
