Principal’s Message Aloha Ha‘aheo Community, Family & Friends, Happy New Year!!! Can you believe we’re starting our second semester already?! This year is just flying by. We have 2 more core values for the semester. This quarter’s value is Mālama, which means to care for or tend to something. One of the issues that we have been dealing with has been that students are continually leaving rubbish in the cafeteria, outside during recesses, and in some cases in the classrooms. This will be a focus for the quarter on how we take care of the school and each other. I would like to recognize new staff members and also some staff members that have changed positions within the school. Max Webster has been one of our part-time support staff in the classrooms and is now our new full time PSAP EA. We also hired Nu‘uana Maikui as one of our part-time support staff. She was a student teacher in Mrs. MacLeod’s classroom for the first semester. Also new to Ha‘aheo is Keli‘i Noda as our part-time computer tech and Garnette Keli‘i as another new part-time support in the classroom. I would like to take the time to thank Latisha Balai, Carl Himmelberger, Mandy Lemes and Helene Setterfield for their excellent service to Ha‘aheo and I wish them the very best in their new endeavors. I was regretfully informed right before Winter Break that we are not able to build our covered play court due to lack of funding. Although our plans were approved, the cost to complete will far exceed our funding even with minimizing and simplifying the plan. In assessing the current needs of the school, I will propose a request for another building to support the increasing student population. Information will be shared as it becomes available regarding this situation. Please feel free to call or stop by, as my door is always open.

2nd Quarter Perfect Attendance Congratulations to our 44 Ha‘aheo students who achieved perfect attendance for the second quarter of our 2017-18 school year. These students were in school on time everyday for the entire quarter. It is our goal to have more students obtain perfect attendance every quarter. Spelling Bee The Ha‘aheo School-wide Spelling Bee was held on December 18th. Congratulations to the following Classroom Bee winners who competed on that day: 3rd Grade: Tess Hagan & Rayden Santos-Abalos 4th Grade: Laycie Apigo & Kailey Brown 5th Grade: Savanna Goode & Keelee Pawai 6th Grade: Katherine Fleming & Ben Wyatt After many rounds and spelling of words such as "exasperation", "conspiracy", "dexterity", and "vegetation", the final winners were Ben in 2nd place and Laycie in 1st place, spelling the championship word "taxidermy". Laycie and Ben will compete in the District Spelling Bee which will take place at the Hawai‘i Academy of Arts and Science in Pahoa on January 20th. The District Bee starts at 11am and is open to the public. Please come and join us in supporting (quietly) Laycie and Ben if you’re free. Thank you to all that supported and donated for the Toys for Tots service learning project. Ha‘aheo School collected a total of 178 toys that were distributed to children less fortunate. Thank you to our parent volunteers for all their hard work and help in making this possible.

Ha‘aheo PTO: School Supply Drive Student Items - Teachers always need school supplies to help our kids learn! You can help by donating extras directly! • School supplies: pencils with erasers, glue, crayons, etc. • “Cool” Stuff: glitter pens, fun erasers, mechanical pencils, mini notebooks/writing pads, etc. • Teacher Supplies: copy paper, videos for kids, etc. Books - Help keep our school’s libraries new and exciting by donating your gently used children’s books! Toys and Trinkets - Want to clean out your house and support your school? Donate your children’s toys and trinkets to the school store and classrooms! • Toys: board games, wood puzzles, toy food, action figures, small stuffed animals, etc. • Trinkets: party favors, stickers, bubbles, tattoos, etc. Supplies may be dropped off in Rm A-8 during school hours throughout the year. Donations, Please!

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION If your child will be at least five years of age on or before July 31, 2018, he/she may attend a public school kindergarten. Please come to our office to pick up a kindergarten packet. The following items are needed to complete registration at Ha‘aheo Elementary School: 1. Birth Certificate (students born between August 1, 2012 and July 31, 2013) 2. Proof of residence that the family is living in Ha‘aheo district (if not in district, submit GE to home district school). Geographic Exception Request forms are available at any public school office or online at hawaiipublicschools.org. 3. Form 14 - Student health record (TB clearance, physical and immunization shots updated). Form 14 available in our kindergarten registration packet. 4. Legal documents - if applicable (i.e. guardianship documents or current Power of Attorney if not living with parents, TROs, etc.) If you have any questions, please call the office at 808-974-4111 or stop by between 7:45am-4:30pm.

Counselor’s Column Aloha Families and Happy New Year!!!! The DOE is asking for your help and support to complete the School Quality Survey (SQS) to gather honest feedback about our public schools as well as have your chance to be heard anonymously. A similar survey is being administered online to teachers and school staff. Participation will benefit us all. The survey, instructions, and pre-paid return envelope will be in a white business envelope addressed to Ha‘aheo parents and sent home in your child’s Tuesday folder. The Parent Line is a free statewide confidential telephone line that serves anyone with concerns about parenting and they welcome any questions regarding behavior and development of children, family concerns, and links to community services. The directory offers contact information for emergency and crisis services; parent education and family support; health, nutrition and family planning; child care, preschool and play activities; specific concerns; services for military families; and immigrant and refugee services as well as internet resources. You can contact them by phone (contact info in directory) or online at www.theparentline.org. The directory (one per family) will also be sent home in your child’s Tuesday folder.
