Happy New Year! I wish all of the families of Orient-Macksburg Community Schools a healthy and prosperous 2018.

During the past two months, patrons of our school district have participated in a school district “needs assessment” survey. Many of the surveys were completed during fall Parent/Teacher conferences and others have been submitted online through the school web site. In addition to the parents, staff members and 4 th-12th grade students took the survey. The survey results have been compiled and there is much for Orient-Macksburg Community Schools to be proud of!

The school district survey indicated that 90% or more of the survey completers Agreed or Strongly agreed with the following statements: Students in the school feel like teachers care about them Teachers are helpful when students ask questions Teachers check to make sure that students understand what is being taught Teachers want students to improve their thinking skills The environment of the school is clean and in good condition Children feel safe at this school

In November, O-M Preschoolers visited the Creston Hy-Vee store. They had the opportunity to explore different departments in the store. Afterwards, the students participated in a scavenger hunt for classroom snacks. HyVee provided the students with doughnuts and milk.

Bank of Memories: Interested in history? The Bank of Memories collection was recently digitized and is available at iowaheritage.org. (Click on Browse Collections, then scroll down to “Places”, Click on “Orient Historical Collection: Bank of Memories”). See 78 photos and various artifacts that were on display at Bank of Memories. The Bank of Memories collection was moved to the Adair County Historical Society museum if you would like to see it in person

UGLY SWEATER CONTEST

Lego® Camps Lego Camp at the public library for kindergarten - fifth graders occurs on Tuesdays from 3:30 - 4:30 pm on January 9, February 13, March 13, and April 10. Parents be sure to send a note to school on the morning of the Lego Camp. All Lego Camp sessions are held at the public library and supervised by public library staff and volunteers. Snacks are provided after school before the camp starts at 3:30. In the event of an early dismissal due to snow or ice the Lego Camp will be canceled. The public library is always closed if the school dismisses early or when school is closed due to bad weather. Check the library Facebook page for weather related announcements, “Public Resource”.

Adult Coloring Program: Next Adult Coloring at the public library will be Thursday, January 4 and February 1. Coloring pages and colored pencils, crayons and gel pens are provided, so there is no cost to you! Come between 4:00 - 6:00 pm. Invite a friend! Knit & Crochet: Join us most Tuesdays at 4:00 pm to work on your knitting and crocheting projects. No meeting on January 9, February 13, March 13, and April 10. New Books: Check out all the new books at the public library for your winter reading. Some titles are: The Gift by Shelley Shephard Gray, Sugar Pine Trail by RaeAnne Thayne, The Farmers' Market Mishap by Wanda Brunstetter, Irena's Children: The Extraordinary Story of the Woman Who Saved 2,500 Children from the Warsaw Ghetto by Tilar J. Mazzeo, No Place I'd Rather Be by Cathy Lamb, and If the Creek Don't Rise by Leah Weiss. Adopt-A-Book: Thank you to everyone for supporting the Adopt-A-Book program this year. Lots of great new reads are now available for everyone thanks to the donors who adopted books. Some of the new adult books by authors you may recognize are: Writing Desk by Rachel Hauck, To Be Where You Are by Jan Karon, Summer that Made Us by Robyn Carr, Stolen Marriage by Diane Chamberlain, Seeing Red by Sandra Brown, Right Time by Danielle Steel, and Proving by Beverly Lewis. Life-changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo, and 7 Lessons from Heaven: How Dying Taught Me to Live a Joy-Filled Life by Mary C. Neal, M.D. Adult Winter Programs: There will be a variety of programs in January, February and March for adults on Saturday mornings. Details will be available early in January, 2018. Check the library website, Facebook page, or bulletin boards at the post office or bank for the schedule. Or ask about the schedule when you are at the library.

On December 19th and 20th the 3 and 4 year old preschool children performed their Winter music to family and friends. They had a special visitor to see them, Santa! Each student was able to sit on Santa’s lap, tell him their Christmas list and receive a goody bag.
