Happy New Year!!! Brother Walter S. Swindell,II 7th Polemarch Bowie Mitchellville (MD) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

Welcome to the January Issue of the BMAC Diamond. As we prepare for the challenges and opportunities that we will embrace personally, professionally, and fraternally in 2017, I would like to take a moment to thank each of you for the support you have given to the chapter over the past year. As your Polemarch for the past 6 months, I am overly optimistic about the possibilities for a fulfilling fraternal experience for the upcoming year. With our Creed as our guide, and our newly established Vision and Mission as our focus, we are on the precipice of achievements that we can all be proud of being a part of. PAST ACTIVITIES KAPPA LEAGUE UPDATES
Guide Right/Kappa League Committee Report dated December 17, 2016 The Kappa Leaguers meet on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at The City of Praise, Academy Training Library, 8601 Jericho City Drive, Landover, Md. The Kappa Leaguers in attendance were Joshua Townes, Lynwood Simmons, CameRon Dalton, and Jabari Ferrell. The chapter brothers in attendance were Brothers Leroy Jenkins, Craig Womack, Hugene Fields, Justin Cobb, and Andre Woolford. Brother Woolford was the presenter for that session’s workshop. The topic of Brother Woolford’s workshop was Mental Health Coping Strategies. He engaged the Kappa Leaguers and his chapter brothers with a very interactive seminar. He discussed the two different types of coping strategies that most people use: Positive and Negative. We discussed the benefits of the positive Coping Strategies in detail so that the Kappa Leaguers would understand constructive ways of handling stress. The examples of the positive Mental Health coping strategies were Physical Activities, Reading/Writing, Hobbies; and the Development of Friendships. Then, he addressed the Negative coping strategies which can lead to destructive and life threatening behaviours. The negative coping strategies were Drug Abuse, Alcohol, Self-Mutilation, Denial, and Storing the Problem. The Kappa Leaguers were thoroughly engaged and participatory throughout Brother Woolford’s workshop. Kudos to Brother Woolford for a well-delivered workshop presentation. This morning, Saturday, December 17th, 2016, Kappa Leaguer, Emmanuel Brown, and the sons of Brother Marcellus Majors donated their time and strength in assisting the Ladies of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Psi Epsilon Omega chapter in their Food Distribution at the Elizabeth House in Laurel, Md. The individuals that we helped were grateful that the young men were able to provide the necessary “muscle” for carrying the bags down the icy streets to their cars. One positive note to mention: Kappa Leaguer, Emmanuel Brown, has been accepted for admission to four universities and has received $175,000 in scholarship offers from those universities. The next Kappa League meeting will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at the City of Praise Ministry, Academy Training Library, 8601 Jericho City Drive, Landover, MD 20785. Brothers, we have a great group of Kappa Leaguers this year. Why don’t you come out and see them for yourself! Sincerely, Brother Leroy Jenkins Guide Right Chairman/Kappa League Advisor

Epsilon Sigma Update

December 17th 2016 Dear Brother Polemarch and fellow Brothers,

The undergraduates have been building off of the momentum we garnered since the beginning of the semester. This month we had our annual Shimmy Like a Nupe (SLAN) event where we collected over 100 donations of non perishable foods to be donated to Martha’s Table --- a well known organization in D.C that supports providing food, education, and family support to families throughout the Metropolitan area. At the event we packed out our Martin Luther King Jr. Auditorium and welcomed many surrounding chapters (TNT, XI, AI to name a few). The event was the highlight of the semester because it allowed students---ladies, to participate in some of the fun cultural aspects of the fraternity. About 6 teams of ladies competed for bragging rights and a trophy. We also illuminated the campus community by allowing our modeling team and a couple dance teams to perform at the show. The show was a success! Following that event, we hosted a fundraising party at UltraBar where students from Bowie State were shuttled to the event, students from Howard, UMD, Towson and others all came out to have a good time. Although we didn’t make a huge profit from the event, we didn’t go under, and it showed us what we can accomplish. We built invaluable relationships with the ownership of the venue and also learned what we need to do to make the event more successful. This event was also a success. Lastly, we hosted our annual Christmas Party for the entire chapter at the National Harbor’s MGM during its grand opening weekend. It was an honor for the undergrads to fellowship with some of the pillars that Epsilon Sigma rests upon. The event turned out to be very beneficial because we were able to gain insight and wisdom of why we call ourselves Epsilon Sigma, EZ Rock. All in all, we are only 16 days into the month and the brothers have been working, focusing on closing out the semester strong with achieving on their finals. We were honored to acknowledge four graduates from the chapter yesterday and hopefully will be able to plug them right into BMAC. Going forward we are still working on developing systems that will help us to be even more efficient as an organisation, planning our winter retreat, and making sure that we have everything in order for intake season. In closing, can someone add me to the email chain list for you all’s events. We didn’t receive the information for the Toys for Tots event until I got the automated phone call. We have to continue to bridge the gap and ensure that we are moving forward. Happy Holidays to each and every one of you. I hope and pray that you experience great fellowship, laughter, peace and love with your families during this season. Yours in the Bond, Rajah A.
