Empathy
In all relationships, you have the right to set limits, feel safe and get support.
You
also have responsibility to trust your instincts and model respectful behaviors.
Healthy relationships are non-threatening, supportive and involve shared responsibility.
That means…
Touching, kissing, hugging and sexual activity require permission
Every person has the right to say no and to change his or her mind
Permission is not gained through coaxing, pressuring, force or harassment

HPV Vaccine—It’s not just a girl thing! Much of the information about HPV virus (human papillomavirus) centers on women, since having the virus increases their risk of getting cervical cancer. But HPV virus in men can cause health problems, too. It's important for men to understand how to reduce the risks of HPV infection. The HPV vaccine Gardasil, approved for use in females in 2006, was approved for males in 2009. Gardasil is approved for boys and men ages 9 to 26 for the prevention of genital warts. Help prevent the spread of HPV virus by having your student (male and female) vaccinated! Call the SBHC today for an appointment. (Adapted from webmd.com)

National SBHC Awareness Month is February! Come in to our SBHC in February and fill out a heart letting us know what you love about the SBHC. We would love to plaster your comments all over our walls! What is a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner?
Allow us to introduce…
Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (PNPs) are health care providers who are dedicated to improving children’s health. PNP’s have advanced education in pediatric nursing and health care and they serve children and families in an extensive range of practice settings. Working with pediatricians and other health care providers, PNPs have been enhancing the health care of children for over forty years.
...new members to the SBHC staff!
What do PNPs do? PNPs serve as pediatric health care providers for well and ill children of all ages. Many parents choose a PNP as their child’s health care provider knowing they will receive individualized quality health care. PNPs offer a variety of services including:
Provide health maintenance care for children, including well child examinations Perform routine developmental screenings Diagnose and treat common childhood illnesses
Jodee Ellison
Provide anticipatory guidance regarding common child health concerns
LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse)
Provide childhood immunizations Perform school physicals
Carissa Bonner attended the University of Michigan and is a PNP at your Houghton Lake School Based Health Center. Adapted from: National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners
What does it cost to be seen at the SBHC? The SBHC will bill current insurance for any services but a sliding-scale is applied according to student’s income ($0) resulting in NO COST ACCUMULATING! Patients seen at the SBHC should not receive any bills.
Did you know??? Getting to know your Houghton Lake School Based Health Center. Your SBHC is just like any doctor’s office or clinic that you go to for appointments with a health care provider. Students and parents can make appointments for services such as well child checks, physicals, immunizations, strep throat, asthma, cough, broken bones or sprains, etc. A parental consent needs to be on file to receive services in the SBHC. A consent form can be found on the SBHC webpage on the Houghton Lake Community Schools website (http:// www.hlcsk12.net/high-school/school-basedhealth-center).
Last year alone, the Houghton Lake SBHC had almost 1700 total visits to the clinic. That is 1700 visits that did not lead to a student missing a full day of school to be seen by a health care provider; did not lead to a parent missing work to bring their child into an appointment. By providing these services, the SBHC makes it easier for students to get health care—Healthy Kids equals improved learning!

Jodee graduated from the Nursing Program at Kirtland Community College in 2001. She has been working in the primary care setting since then. She started at the School Based Health Center in November 2013. She has stated that it has been a learning experience! It has been a lot of fun, meeting the kids and seeing how much they use the SBHC. She can’t wait until the “new” clinic opens and they can get all settled in. She has 2 children and 3 grandchildren, who she spends her spare time with. She also has lots of birds, a cat and dogs, and she enjoys quilting.
Holly Holm Administrative Assistant Holly started her adventure with the School Based Health Centers in October 2013 and has enjoyed the ride! She previously worked in a school setting and enjoys the interaction with students and staff. She coordinates her time between the Roscommon and Houghton Lake School Based Health Centers. Holly and her husband Joel have 2 children and 1 very interesting cat named Lynk. She enjoys reading, softball, watching her girls play sports and grow.
Coming soon...our new and improved Renovated Clinic opens soon! Stay tuned for information on our Open House!
