Administrative Procedure 164
HEALTHY FOOD AND BEVERAGE CHOICES Background The district recognizes and supports the correlation between healthy nutrition and the physical, emotional, social and intellectual development of students. The district acknowledges that well-nourished students are able to concentrate better, retain and apply information more effectively and are more likely to demonstrate positive behaviours and relationships with others. Recognizing that a holistic approach to building students’ knowledge about nutrition is important, the district, in collaboration with parents/legal guardians, community partners, the Alberta Health Services and food service providers, is committed to supporting education and life-long habits about healthy food and beverage choices in the curriculum and the everyday culture of schools. Healthy choices are defined as foods that are low in added fat, sugar, salt and/or caffeine and higher in vitamins, minerals and/or fibre and fall within at least one of the four food groups in Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide. Healthy beverages include water and drinks low in sugar, salt and caffeine, as well as, low fat milk. Procedures 1. 2. Food and beverages distributed in other ways such as breakfast and lunch programs, special lunch days, banquets, celebrations, class parties, etc. must also comply with the Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide and Alberta Nutrition Guidelines for Children and Youth and follow the same guidelines for food and beverages sold through vending machines and other food services. 3. Food and beverage marketing influences food preferences, purchase behaviours and consumption. Therefore, it is the expectation of the district that there will be a consistent message regarding healthy food and beverage choices within each classroom and throughout schools. This includes positive role modelling by staff and other adults in staff rooms and other areas of schools. In addition, all communication formats such as posters, notices, newsletters, fundraising and web sites must convey the same message of healthy nutrition. The consistent message is that healthy food choices are available, affordable and promoted in schools. 4. While it is important to continually educate the school community regarding the benefits and affordability of healthy food choices, it is the right of parents/legal guardians to determine the food and beverage selections that their children bring to school for their own meals and snacks. In this context, respectful conversations with parents/legal guardians addressing the concept of moderation are important. Situations involving special dietary needs, allergies, or sensitivities will be supported on a case by case basis. 5. The manager, Business Services is responsible for the district contracts that are in place for Food Services (cafeteria) and vending machines (snacks and beverages) which result from the RFP process. 6. Annually, all schools must complete the Healthy Choices Survey which is updated annually. Approval Date:
