Happy New Year Everyone!! Wow, I can’t believe another year has passed. Our society has had many good memories and some good changes. Among them our new home at Celebration Methodist Church, the planting of our rose garden and so much more. I hope everyone has enjoyed it as much as I have. As I enter the last half of my year as President, I hope more progress can be made in reaching out to rose lover’s all over our county and beyond. What a wonderful Christmas dinner we had at the church. Everyone out-did themselves preparing good things to eat and beautifully decorating the room. I am always so impressed with the girls’ playing as each year shows such an impressive advancement in their technique. It’s been delightful to see them grow and blossom as artists and as young ladies. Thank you both for continuing to share your love of music with us. Sadly we missed John and Dan but I have heard John has been dong well. I hope he continues to get stronger and is back with us soon. We have a wonderful program slated for January. Though not necessarily about roses, it will give us much insight into growing plants in Florida. We probably have one of the most difficult environments for rose growing especially in an eco-friendly way. But it can be done. So let’s all come to the meeting and give Wendy Wilbur a big rose society welcome!!! February will see us planning some companion plants in the rose garden. So anyone who has excess of amaryllis, agapanthus, day lilies, iris or other types of plants, bring them with you to help enhance the beautiful roses. I’m currently enjoying my time with my family here in Denver. Had some snow last night and it was so beautiful. My granddaughter, Bea, is just the sweetest little thing and is really starting to talk. It’s so much fun to share this time with her. I send you all blessings for this brand new year for health, happiness and beautiful roses. See ya’ll soon!! Sally

Your garden is tidier than your home Your car automatically pulls over when you pass a garden center You always carry a shovel, bottled water and a plastic bag in your trunk as emergency tools You’d rather go to a nursery to shop than a clothes store You know that Sevin is not a number You can distinguish between BS and BS (black spot) You purchase a new car and you make your selection based on the number of plants it could carry Your bookshelf has more gardening books than any other subject You know that the four seasons are: (1) Planning the Garden (2) Preparing the Garden (3) Gardening (4) Preparing and Planning for the next Garden!!

Florida Friendly Landscaping A Florida Friendly yard does not merely offer a beautiful landscape—it also becomes an asset to the environment by protecting natural resources and preserving Florida’s unique beauty. It recognizes that the home landscape is part of a larger natural system that will help in creating a Florida Friendly yard. Florida Friendly Landscaping can be considered an expansion of Xeriscaping,. It includes the best management practices concerning storm water runoff and living on a waterfront. A properly maintained Florida Friendly yard can help homeowners conserve water and reduce pollution of water resources. The Florida Friendly approach to landscaping emphasizes nine interrelated principles. 1. Right Plant, Right Place—Plants selected to suit a specific site will require minimal amounts of water, fertilizers and pesticides. 2. Water Efficiently—Irrigate only when your plants need water. Efficient watering is the key to a healthy yard and conservation of limited resources. 3. Fertilize Appropriately—Less is often best. Overuse of fertilizers can be hazardous to your yard and the environment. 4. Mulch—Maintaining a 3” layer of mulch will help retain soil moisture, prevent erosion and suppress weeds. 5. Attract Wildlife—Plants in your yard that provide food, water and shelter will attract Florida’s diverse wildlife. 6. Manage Yard Pests Responsibly—Unwise use of pesticides can harm people, pets, beneficial organisms and the environment 7. Recycle—Grass clippings and leaves provide nutrients to the soil and reduce waste disposal when reused on the landscape. 8. Reduce Storm Water Runoff—Water running off your landscape carry pollutants such as debris, fertilizer and pesticides that can adversely affect water quality. 9. Protect the Waterfront—Waterfront property is very fragile and should be carefully protected to maintain freshwater and marine ecosystems. _______________________________________________________________________________________
From Linda Rengarts: In June 2014, I am going to retire from publishing the Gainesville Rose Society Newsletter and Web site. I have been doing the Newsletter since 2007 and the web site in early 2008. I have other obligations that are taking up my time and need to step aside. Someone else might come up with some new and interesting ways to create the newsletter and up-date the web site.
