A Poem for a Pisces Hairstylist

A Day in The Life - by Bob Keene

OK. Let’s go - grab your lunch - did you brush? We’re already late - we really must rush. Tell the teacher you’re late ‘cause the car wouldn’t go. No, I used that one last week - say we needed a tow. When I slow down - jump out - I really can’t stop, I still have to vacuum and clean up the shop. I didn’t have time last night - in my haste I was late for auditions - had no time to waste. Bye kids - have a good day. I’ll see you tonight. Remember - straight home - no messes - don’t fight. So off to the Shop - in a flurry she goes Just undo this seat belt and slip on the hose. If the angle was right on one of those mirrors I’d put on this make-up without any smears. While holding the steering wheel straigh with my kneee; I can put on my lipstick and sip on my tea. I’ll keep them all guessing - I won’t tell these tricks. They’ll probably think I’ve been up since six. I walk in at nine - quite calm and sedate to find my appointment was pre-booked for eight! Good morning - you’re early or - sorry, I’m late. If you’ll fold up these towels you won’t have to wait while I put on some coffee and clean up this mess. No apologies please - it’s my fault, I guess. There, we’re ready - so what shall it be? A “curl up and dye” or a “Leave it to me?” I think that looks great - but you still want more? My next appointment just walked through the door. We’re still right on time - just a little behind. I’ll be with you shortly, when she makes up her mind. Help yourself to some coffee - it’s just a fresh brew. By the time it gets cold, I’m sure we’ll be through. It’s no easy task to wash, cut and style, making sure every customer leaves with a smile. So on goes the day filled with clipping and chatter. Finding who’s been with who - and what doesn’t matter. Till all the day’s deeds have been done. I should clean up the shop - but I really must run. I’ll hurry straight home - I have plenty to do. The walls all need scrubbing and windows do too. A change would be nice from this pace so, perhaps I’ll pour a stiff drink and promptly collapse! Sweet Dreams, Darilyn.

Cumberland Brewing Co. Is Alive and Well!

The brewery located on the corner of Dunsmuir and Third Ave, next door to Riders Pizza, and kitty-corner to the Wandering Moose, opened quietly on Dec 23rd, by simply opening the door. The word got out that they could fill growlers, and it spread like wildfire. Now two weeks into being open, they are still trying to catch their breath. The brewery has 3 beers on tap, a Pale Ale, an English Bitter, and a Dunkleweizen. By press time, the Oatmeal Stout will be added. You can buy a 32 oz. (.946L) Squealer, or a 64 oz. (1.89L) Growler, and fill it with your choice of taps. You take it home, and enjoy, and care for your growler. It is now your bottle, to bring back, and refill over and over. Make sure you rinse with warm, then cold water, and drain thoroughly. It is the perfect example of reduce and re-use. Also available is the 8.5L Pig, which stays fresh and perfect in your fridge for 10 to 12 weeks. It is a self contained draft system, which allows you to enjoy as little or as much as you want, without the beer loosing its carbonation. It is a great piece of technology, which they would happily tell you about when you come by. If you prefer to stay, or enjoy a beer while your growler is filled, they are fully licensed to serve beer by the 14 oz glass, and the 20 oz pint. As many will already know, there is a hole in the wall, joining Riders Pizza with CBC, to make the perfect compliment. Beer and Pizza! As well as the already famous pizza, which is becoming known all around the Valley, Riders is expanding the menu for the Brewery Tap room, to include a Ploughman’s lunch, which contains fresh ingredients sourced weekly. Soups are also available, and constantly changing. The lovely Foccacia bread is cubed with Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar, and a fresh Greek Salad is also on the menu. They feature a monthly flavour of Pizza as well, so look for a return of the Rueben pizza, rumoured to be coming soon. Grab the family and come on down to enjoy an evening at the Brewery Tap room, because we are family friendly. All minors must be accompanied by an Adult, but are welcomed. The response to this aspect has been enjoyed by many families already, and is the perfect way to unwind together. The owners of the brewery are grateful for the support that the community has given them, and they look forward to earning that for years to come.

Cumberland’s Annual Lunar New Year Party Ringing in the Year of the Sheep with LunarFest Started in 2009 and built to be a Vancouver Winter Olympics Legacy event, LunarFest is Canada’s premier presenter of contemporary expression in Asian arts and culture. It endeavours to reach new Canadians and those who have been here for many generations to share in the diversity of Canada. It also encourages and fosters the collaboration of Canadian and International cultural presenters to create new forms of artistic expressions. LunarFest is a festival that brings together Soul, Art and Life on one stage. Built as a festival that celebrates one of the oldest traditions for many Asian cultures – Lunar New Year, LunarFest aims to collaborate with many Asian communities and outreaches to other Canadians. Since the inception, LunarFest is also built on an important artistic element for many cultures – the lanterns. Through collaborations with professional artists and school children in Canada and around the world, LunarFest has already presented LunarFest this year in Toronto and Vancouver. As part of their curatorial mandate, LunarFest is dedicated to protect our environment. Different from many Asian lantern festivals, all of the lanterns created for LunarFest are using only LED lights. In addition, LunarFest also incorporates an environment awareness campaign each year. After all, celebrations should be artistic, fun, entertaining, educational and environmental. Cumberland Real Estate Update As a REALTOR® who both lives and works in Cumberland, many people are often asking me how the local real estate market is doing as I’m out and about in the community. Real estate is generally a topic of interest for many people, so I’ve teamed up with Currently Cumberland to contribute a regular Cumberland Real Estate Article for 2015. I’ll aim to keep the content fun and informative and provide market updates, real estate trends and tips for success in 2015. If you have a topic you would like me to touch on, please reach out and let me know. With 2014 now finished we can take a look at what happened in the Cumberland single family housing market and compare those figures directly to 2013. 2014 was a busy year with 73 homes sold in Cumberland, which is significantly higher than the 58 homes sold in 2013. The average Cumberland house price also climbed from $294,663 in 2013 to $304,274 in 2014, which represents a 3.26% increase! Interest rates are still at an all-time low and there are many Buyers still looking to move to Cumberland because of everything it has to offer. Many Sellers like to wait until the spring to list their home for sale, but now is actually a great time to hit the market, as there are typically less homes on the market at this time of year. If you are thinking of listing your home and would like to know what it would sell for in today’s market, please feel free to give me a call at (778) 585-0525 or email me at [email protected] and I would be happy to let you know! -Written by: Darren Anonson REALTOR ® with Coast Realty Comox Valley

The Importance of Treating Hearing Loss It’s no secret that hearing loss affects people of all ages. However, studies have shown that those who do something about their hearing loss are more likely to participate in social activities, maintain personal relationships, and feel more independent. Hearing aids can help you perform better at work and increase your earning potential. Untreated hearing loss among older people has been associated with increased likelihood of developing dementia and depression. It is hard to keep your mind sharp and be confident when you are not connected to the world around you. It has also been shown that brain tissue actually shrinks more quickly in hearing impaired seniors than in those with normal hearing, more than a cubic centimeter per year! As well, seniors with hearing loss are 32% more likely to have hospital stays and 36% more likely to have extended illness or injury than normal hearing seniors. Hearing loss may even be linked to increased probability of falling. The good news is that hearing loss can be detected early and easily by having a free – and painless - hearing test! If a hearing loss is found, options for treatment that suit your lifestyle and budget can be discussed. Digital hearing aids are small and discreet and are available at a wide range of prices. Modern technology keeps hearing aids connected with the latest electronic devices. Don’t wait - treated hearing loss can truly help you to hear better and love life! Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department Community Update

250-336-2531

Well, 2015 is here and 2014 is over, so I would like to take a moment to talk about this past year. We had a good year fire-wise in Cumberland. We had some losses but overall a really good safe year in regards to Fires and Motor Vehicle Incidents. I think the warmer weather has contributed to our success. We had one major fire loss which was covered by insurance and we had no loss of life or injuries in Fires. So far 2015 has been a very mild winter, I hope I have not jinxed it! But in the mountains we could use some snow for our water supply come summer and for the people working and playing up on Mount Washington. Without a new snowpack it can make our forest lands very dry in the summer. Last year we got very lucky and we did a great job in the forest. We had no major fire activity in our forest area and we only had a few wildfire incidents in our area which were small in nature thanks to their location and being reported and responded to very quickly. These calls never really caused us many problems in 2014 thanks to all of your help in being vigilant. In the 2014 fire reports, we had 192 responses - 88 were fire related and most of these were not serious. We had 70 First responder calls , which are Medical aid calls, and the remaining calls were Motor Vehicle Incidents and Rescue call-outs. Overall we had about 16 less calls than 2013. We did have some complaints of people burning garbage in their wood stoves and outside. We get calls every year about the same problem; this is a violation of our Bylaw and the reason for giving out permits so that residents are aware that this is not allowed. As of January 1, 2015 you need to renew your back yard recreation permit; it’s free and good for the year so please come to the Village Office and get one. This helps us ensure residents know the rules. I’d like to thank everyone for their cooperation with the Burning Bylaw, and we know we do have people not complying with it, but the majority of our residents are very good about the rules and regulations of burning in the Village. The next time we can have a Class B Permit to burn branches and leaves and do yard clean up is March 15 to April 30. This permit is also free and available twice a year. Prevention and being Fire Smart lowers our risk of fires. Also, we always need to be looking for ways to teach our children fire safety while at the same time teaching them to be safe. We also constantly need to be on guard for potential fire spots around us. In our homes, in our sheds or shops and kitchens, and if we use wood for heat in woodstoves and chimneys. We need to continually search out these unsafe areas in our homes and yards and work to eliminate hazards. Most of you may have felt the latest Earth Quake off the West coast that we had in early January and lately we have been having small ones off the West coast almost on a daily basis. Please think about preparedness in your home in the event that we have a major Earth Quake. It is something we continually work on and prepare for. Being prepared is always wise and there is plenty of information on the web on how to be prepared. So remember to check your Smoke Alarms along with your family escape plans, and let’s continue the rest of the year 2015 as safe as we can make it. The Cumberland Fire Department is looking for Volunteer Firefighters. So if you’d like to play a major role in our community as a Volunteer come and see us at the Firehall. Cumberland Fire Chief, Mike Williamson
