David Weir Preparatory Academy Family Involvement Policy Required for Federal Compliance Approved April 11, 2017 PART I GENERAL EXPECTATIONS [Note: Each school in its School Family Involvement Policy* must establish the school’s expectations for parent involvement [Section 1118(b), ESEA].] David Weir Preparatory Academy agrees to implement the following statutory requirements: • The school will jointly develop with parents, distribute to parents of participating children, a School Parent Involvement Policy that the school and parents of participating children agree on. • The school will notify parents about the School Family Involvement Policy in an understandable and uniform format and, to the extent practicable, will distribute this policy to parents in a language the parents can understand. • The school will make the School Family Involvement Policy available to the local community. • The school will periodically update the School Family Involvement Policy to meet the changing needs of parents and the school. • The school will adopt the school’s school-parent compact as a component of its School Family Involvement Policy. • The school agrees to be governed by the following statutory definitions of parent involvement, and will carry out programs, activities and procedures in accordance with this definition. Parent Involvement means the participation of parents in regular, two-way, and meaningful communication involving student academic learning and other school activities, including ensuring – (A) Parents play an integral role in assisting their child’s learning; (B) Parents are encouraged to be actively involved in their child’s education at school; (C) Parents are full partners in their child’s education and are included, as appropriate, in decision-making and on advisory committees to assist in the education of their child. (D) the carrying out of other activities, such as those described in section 1118 of ESEA.

David Weir Preparatory Academy Involvement Practices PART II DAVID WEIR PREPARATORY ACADEMY’S INVOLVEMENT POLICY (Implementation of the required Parent Involvement Policy Components) Joint development and agreement of the School Family Involvement Practices and the Single School Plan. We will involve parents in an organized, ongoing, and timely way in the planning, review, and improvement of Title 1 programs, including the school parental involvement policy for all parents and the Single Plan for Student Achievement. 1. The SSC will review and amend by February/March each year the school’s Parent Involvement Practices (including the school-parent compact) annually. 2. ELAC will review each year at its final annual meeting. 3. Each month the SCC will review a different goal of the Single School Plan. The following items regarding the goal will be addressed 1. Data on progress toward meeting objectives 2. Related budget items o Suggestions for change David Weir will provide for the distribution of the School Parent Involvement Practices and provide parents of participating students: timely information about Title 1 programs, a description and explanation of the curriculum used at the school, the academic assessments used to measure student progress, and the proficiency levels students are expected to reach. There will be opportunities for regular meetings, if requested by parents, to: make suggestions, receive timely responses, and participate, as appropriate, in decisions relating to the education of their children. 1. The SSC will gather input for updating these practices from ELAC and PTA in order to amend these practices each year in February. 2. These changes will be voted on during a spring SSC meeting after being posted on the school website. This and all SSC meetings will be open to the public. 3. If David Weir Preparatory Academy becomes eligible for Program Improvement status, Public School Choice will be offered to parents. A letter will be sent to parents prior to August. Parents may opt to have their children attend a non-Program Improvement school. Transportation will be provided. 4. If David Weir Preparatory Academy becomes eligible for Program Improvement status,

Supplemental Educational Services will be offered to all parents of students who participate in the free or reduced lunch program and who meet achievement criteria as established by the District. Meetings will be held explaining the programs and choices. An Annual Parent Meeting will be held to inform parents that their child’s school participates in Title I; about the requirements of Title I; of their rights to be involved; about their school’s participation in Title I. A flexible number of day and evening meetings will be held. 1. An annual meeting by September 30 of each year, a school wide Title I meeting may be held in combination with our grade level Back to School Nights. 2. Notices for this meeting will be distributed by flyer and school messenger. The meeting will be advertised on the school marquee and posted at school . 3. The meeting agenda will include: 

Description of Title I. SIP, and EIA o District Parent Involvement Policy o School Family Involvement Practices o School-Parent Compact o Key Components of the Single School Plan o Program Improvement Status if applicable o School Choice if applicable o Supplemental Educational Services if applicable

4. David Weir Preparatory Academy will have flexible day and evening meetings for all SSC, ELAC, PTO and Parent Education programs scheduled throughout the school year, information about Title I programs and progress will be reviewed. They will include child care and may include home visits to support parent involvement. Description and explanation of the curriculum, assessments, and proficiency levels 1. Common Core State Standards will be explained at our Back to School Night 2. Standards Based Report Cards will be used and explained during parent-teacher conferences. 3. Student assessment information will be explained during parent teacher conferences. 4. School wide assessment results which may include - a review of Smarter Balanced and/ or MAPS assessment results will be shared with parents during the first Title I meeting, SSC meeting, ELAC meeting and No Excuses Parent Forums. 5. A Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment Workshop will be held to review Smarter Balanced assessment items and practices. 6. Grade level Response to Intervention (RtI) meetings and Student Study Team meetings will review data and intervention programs. Parent suggestions and comments 1. Solicited and recorded at all parent meetings and events. 2. Discussed at SSC meetings.

David Weir Preparatory Academy’s Parent Involvement Practices PART III SHARED RESPONSIBILITIES FOR HIGH STUDENT ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT School-Parent Compact The David Weir Preparatory Academy School Compact will be reviewed with parents or caregivers of participating students that outlines: • • •

The shared responsibility of parents, and the entire school staff to improve students’ academic achievement The shared responsibility between the school and parents to help children achieve the statewide academic content standards. The school’s responsibility to provide high-quality curriculum and instruction in a supportive and effective learning environment that helps children served under Title 1 meet the statewide Common Core State Standards. The ways in which parents will be responsible for supporting their children’s learning, such as monitoring attendance, homework completion, and television watching; volunteering in their children’s classroom; participating, as appropriate, in decisions related to the education of their children and the positive use of their children’s extracurricular time. The importance of ongoing communication between teachers and parents through (at a minimum):

Annual parent-teacher conferences in which the parent compact is discussed in relation to the individual child’s achievement o Frequent reports about their child’s achievement o Reasonable access to staff o Reasonable opportunities to volunteer at the school, participate in their children’s class, and observe classroom activities The parent compact will be: 1. Introduced during Back to School Nights 2. Sent home in students’ folders. 3. Revised annually with SSC.

PART IV BUILDING CAPACITY FOR INVOLVEMENT David Weir Preparatory Academy will Build Capacity for Parent Involvement, support the partnership among school, parents, and the community to improve academic achievement by communicating and offering the following: 1. Two Back to School Nights 2. At least 3 family-centered evenings 3. Monthly Awards Assemblies 4. At least 3 family/student centered day time events 5. Student Achievement Bulletin Boards will be updated regularly where parents can view student progress/achievement and student work products.

The David Weir PTO will partner with the school to provide snacks at parent workshop events. We will provide assistance to parents in understanding content standards; achievement standards; state and local assessments; requirements of Title I; monitoring student progress; how to work with teachers and how to monitor and improve the achievement of their children through but not limited to: 1. Back-to-School Nights 2. ELAC meetings 3. School Site Council 4. Parent Education (GED or English Language Classes) 5. Parent Training Workshops, Forums We will provide materials and training to help parents work with their children to improve academic achievement through: 1. Materials trainings and awareness for SSC, ELAC and other parents for curriculum awareness 2. Site walk-through for SSC and ELAC to observe the use of instructional materials/instructional practices. 3. School and classroom newsletters 4. SSC, SAC and ELAC training 5. Parent Leadership Institute (PLTI) 6. Collaborate with other schools and the Police department for Gang and Drug Awareness programs

David Weir Preparatory Academy will educate staff on parent and community outreach with the assistance of parents, in the value of parent contributions and how to work with parents as equal partners by: 1. Staff newsletters and staff professional development sessions throughout the year. 2. Staff meetings prior to conferences will focus on how to set up effective conferences, write comments on Standards-based reports cards and progress reports, and share student achievement data with families. 3. Staff meetings prior to conferences will focus on how to make conferences more meaningful for students and parents, as well as supporting parents in helping their kids utilize technology based academic programs. We will coordinate and integrate parental involvement with other programs and conduct activities that encourage and support parents in more fully participating in the education of their children. Information will be distributed related to school and parent programs, meetings and other activities to the parents of participating students in a format and, to the extent practicable, in a language the parents understand. Provide such other reasonable support for parental involvement activities under this section as parents may request. Accessibility. Provide full opportunities for the participation of parents with limited English proficiency, parents with disabilities, and parents of migratory students including providing information and school reports required under Section 6311 in a format and, to the extent practicable in a language, such parents understand. PART V ADOPTION The David Weir Preparatory Academy Parent Involvement Practices has been developed jointly with, and agreed on with, parents of children participating in Title I programs, as evidenced by agendas and minutes of the School Site Council. These practices were adopted by David Weir Preparatory Academy on and will be in effect for the period of one year.
