PUBLICATIONS: BOOKS: 1. Literature, Gender and Nation-Building in Nineteenth Century Egypt, the Life and Works of `A’isha Taymur (1840-1902), (Palgrave McMillan due out in April 2011) . The book examine the role that literature, the switch form Turkish to Arabic, the changes taking place in the Arabic language and translations of literary works contributed to the process of nation-building in Egypt. This period is also a politically turbulent one leaving its imprint on the ruling Muhammed Ali dynasty which witnessed the deposition of one ruler (Ismail) in the late 1870s, the ascent of his unpopular son (Tewfik) allied with international forces to power and the onset of British occupation in 1882 which put an end to the national rebellion led by Ahemd `Arabi. I locate `A‟isha Taymur, the most prominent woman writer in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, and her published works in these contexts examining the important roles she played in nation-building and the politics of the period through the discussion of the crises facing the emerging national community, dynastic government and how to positively respond to them. Her only work of fiction, Nata’ij al-Ahwal fir al-‘Aqwal wa al-Af`al (Consequences of the Changes Affecting Actions and Statements) published in 1887 was preoccupied with the crisis of the Islamic dynastic forms of government and its need for reform. Not only did the fate of prince reflect that crisis, but the need to take into account the changes in the community and lead them to fruition. Next, Taymur wrote a social commentary titled, Mir’at al-Ta’mul fi al-Umur, (A Reflective Mirror on Some Matters) published in 1892, that turned its attention to the crisis of the family.In it, she offered her interpretation (ijtihad) of the Qur‟anic verses that

dealt with the rights of men and women in Islam suggesting that male leadership (quwamma) over women was contingent on their meeting their marital responsibilities. Her views provoked an early debate of her views in the 1890s including a hostile response from a member of the ulema class and support from a respected nationalist writer contributing to the first debate on gender issues and concerns in which women were active participants and not just the objects of male analysis. Last but not least, Taymur‟s published her collected poems titled Hilyat al-Tiraz (the Best of their Class) also in 1892 that offered evidence of her active involvement in state efforts to rehabilitate the image of the upopular Kheidve Tewfik in the eyes of the Egyptian public. It also documented the hostility that Taymur faced within her family and her class as she took on these new roles. This work, which preceded that of Qasim Amin‟s book on the Liberation of the Woman by seven years, offered a basis for a different appreciation of Muslim women‟s relationship to politics and their continuous involvement in the affairs of their communities. They establish Muslim women‟s interest in high politics and how their nineteenth century Muslim and modern representations failed to capture their complex preoccupations and concerns. 2. Nahu Dirasat al-Nu` fi al-Ulum al-Siyassiya (Towards the Study of Gender in Political Science), editor (Cairo: Multaqa al-Mar‟at wa al-Thakira, 2010). This is an Arabic reader that introduces the important research works done by political scientists working in the US to integrate gender in their discipline. It also examines some of the important intellectual contributions done by US political scientists on women and gender in Middle Eastern societies. Nominated the PhD dissertation of Ms. Merve Kavakci titled “Questioning the Role Model Status of Turkey: A Critical examination of the Social and Political Implications of the Headscarf Ban” to the Middle East Studies Association‟s Malcom Kerr Dissertation Award (July 2007).



Served as the faculty advisor to Ms. Reem Abu Zahra, who had a Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship at the American University in Cairo and was selected to the Fellow Mobility Program, to do part of her Masters‟ research on Egyptian state capacity at Howard University from February 24, 2008 to April 24, 2008



I organized and chaired a panel of Howard University graduate students at this year‟s Middle East Studies Association Meetings titled “Comparative Perspectives on the Politics of Dress” scheduled for November 21, 2005 in Washington D.C.
