WELCOME T
We welcome you all to Wiradjuri Country. The Cowra Region is part of the Wiradjuri language group, the largest in NSW which covers most of the State. Connection to Country is important to our community in remembering the history of our ancestors, our elders and our sense of belonging. Our local Wiradjuri community continues its strong connection to the land. The Lachlan River (Kalari) has significant meaning to the Wiradjuri people through stories, songs and art. The Aboriginal Murals painted on the pylons of the bridge over the Lachlan River are the creations of Kym and Trish Freeman and the local community. The artwork symbolises the animals and local landscapes around Cowra. The murals are a shared project, with both local families and school children contributing their personal stories and handprints. The Gugaa, or goanna, is the Wiradjuri Totem. Take time to sit quietly at the river or at Billy Goat (Bellevue) Hill and make your own connection with our Wiradjuri Country.

WHY THREE DAYS? T
Well, two days are simply not enough. Not if you want to relax and wander. Not if you want to take your time and explore. Most of Cowra’s attractions are free and we have some extraordinary tales and history to share. Take your time in our great outdoors, relax at the river, play a round of golf, do some cycling and discover our beautiful walking tracks. Use us as a base to explore our surrounding villages and countryside. Slow down and relax, with sunsets and night skies that are best enjoyed with a picnic and a glass of local wine. Enjoy everything that Cowra, Canowindra and countryside have to offer. Relaxed and unhurried. Give yourself the gift of three days in Cowra.

HAPPY WANDERING T
take your time and unwind
From bushwalking and picnics in stunning National Parks, to canoeing along the Lachlan River or exploring our country lanes on a bicycle, there are many ways to enjoy the beautiful Cowra region.
WALKING AND CYCLING Just as the Lachlan River meanders through the Cowra landscape, cyclists from all over the country visit the Cowra, Greenethorpe and Canowindra region to ride some of the quietest, smoothest and most scenic roads in New South Wales. In Cowra itself, there is a network of interconnecting concrete paths in the Cowra Peace Precinct where you can enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. Walk or cycle to the Bellevue Hill Lookout, the Japanese Garden and the historic Prisoner of War Campsite. There are paths along the Lachlan River too. Make sure you view the impressive murals on the bridge pylons. If you’re a little more adventurous, head to Wyangala Dam where you’ll find some great mountain bike trails. As you explore the network of trails, you’ll discover some natural rest spots, perfect for a picnic, a photo opportunity or simply to take a moment for a well deserved breather. To view or download a copy of the Cowra Rides Guide, go to www.cowratourism.com.au/cycling. For more information about cycling in and around Canowindra, go to www.cyclingcanowindra.com.au.

OUR WARTIME LEGACY T
a tale of reconciliation & friendship THE COWRA BREAKOUT
WAR CEMETERIES
At 1.50am on 5 August 1944, over 1000 Japanese prisoners launched a mass escape from the Prisoner of War Campsite. It was the largest prisoner of war breakout in modern military history. 231 Japanese prisoners and four Australian soldiers lost their lives. From this violent beginning, a journey of reconciliation and friendship between the people of Cowra and the nation of Japan has developed and continues to grow.
The Japanese War Cemetery contains the graves of Japanese military personnel who died at the Cowra Prisoner of War Campsite as well as those who died during the attacks on northern Australia. The Cemetery is on land ceded to Japan in 1963 and is the only Japanese War Cemetery outside Japan. The Australian War Cemetery adjoins the Japanese War Cemetery. It contains graves of those servicemen who died at the Cowra Military Training Camp, as well as the four Australian soldiers killed during the 1944 breakout.
POW HOLOGRAM THEATRE Located at the Cowra Visitor Information Centre, this nine minute presentation artfully brings the events of The Cowra Breakout to life, through the eyes of a young local woman, and is a natural place to begin your historical journey in Cowra.
PRISONER OF WAR CAMPSITE The Prisoner of War Campsite ruins are still visible and interpretive signage helps you visualise what once stood in this picturesque part of Cowra. Stand under the replica Guard Tower and an audio presentation further brings the scene to life. Walk or cycle the Garrison Walk that takes you to the Japanese Garden and Cultural Centre. You might even spot a kangaroo or two. For further information, contact Cowra Visitor Information Centre on 02 6342 4333.

AUSTRALIA’S WORLD PEACE BELL Made from melted down coins donated by 106 countries, there are 23 Peace Bells throughout the world. Cowra’s long-standing contribution to world peace and international understanding was recognised by the World Peace Bell Association in 1992. The Cowra Civic Square proudly houses the Bell. Listen to the audio presentation, read the interpretive signage and ring the bell.
EUROPA PARK From 1940–1945, the Cowra Military Camp trained some 80,000 military personnel. In 1949, the site became the Cowra Migrant Camp and was home to about 17,000 European migrants until 1955. A memorial and interpretive signage have been erected in honour of the migrant families of Cowra in Europa Park.

beauty all year round The ultimate tranquil experience, the Cowra Japanese Garden & Cultural Centre is a peaceful space in which you can indulge your senses, unwind and enjoy natural beauty all year round. Take the time to explore the 5 hectares of manicured garden, serene lakes and cascading streams with sweeping views of Cowra’s countryside and beyond. Ken Nakajima designed the Kaiyushiki (strolling) garden, to symbolise the Japanese landscape and it is classified by the National Trust as ‘A place of Cultural, Architectural and Historic Significance to be preserved for present and future generations.’ The Japanese Garden is beautiful during all seasons, but is at its best during Spring when the annual Sakura
Matsuri (Cherry Blossom Festival) is held. Thousands of visitors attend Sakura Matsuri each year to celebrate the stunning cherry blossoms and enjoy a variety of Japanese cultural activities and performances. The Cultural Centre showcases exhibitions from a variety of local and regional artists, whilst the two galleries feature an extensive collection of Japanese artworks and artefacts. Feed the Koi carp from the viewing platforms overlooking the lakes, enjoy a meal at the onsite cafe or simply take the time to relax in an authentic open air Tea House. Either way, you will be transported to a place of peace and relaxation.

RAILWAY TALES T
reminders of our past
The Lachlan Valley Railway Heritage Centre is one of Cowra’s best kept secrets. Only five minutes from the town centre, you can wander through an extraordinary collection of historic engines, carriages and wagons housed at the Cowra Locomotive Depot, which was last operational in 1985. The Lachlan Valley Railway Society Co-op Ltd is a notfor-profit organisation. The volunteers operate the Heritage Centre, as well as maintaining and restoring the massive roundhouse and other historic buildings, gardens, locomotives and rolling stock. This is not a static museum, but a living railway depot where work is carried on in much the same way as it always was albeit on a much smaller scale. You’re welcome to explore the exhibits and enter a number of the carriages that are on display. The sleeping cars, with their beautifully preserved cedar panelling and original fixtures and fittings, evoke memories of a past era of train travel. The collection, buildings and grounds also provide a diverse range of photo opportunities and are sure to delight photographers with stunning shots. Guided tours can be arranged and are recommended as they really bring the site to life, and highlight the strong connection of the railway to the people of Cowra. The Cowra Railway Station is heritage listed and home to the Cowra Antique Vehicle Club who host open days on the first Sunday of each month.
