Cottage Reflections Term 2 Week 1

This week during our literacy activities the children played games to develop their phonemic awareness. We passed a basket around the circle with pictures from The Very Hungry Caterpillar in it. The children had to choose a picture, name the picture and then say what sound they could hear at the beginning of the word.

The children had fun with our new ‘Zoom In’ thinking routine. They had to look at sections of a picture as they tried to work out what it was. They discovered that you can change your mind as you discover new information. We then talked about bird’s nests and why birds build them. Everyone was keen to share their ideas and theories. It was lovely to not only hear everyone talk so confidently but to also see everyone listen to their peer’s ideas and respond respectfully.

During our STEM lesson we challenged the children make a nest to keep an egg or a baby bird safe. The children went outside to collect some more materials to use to create their own nests. They collected lots of twigs and nettles from around the trees in The Valley.

We gave each child some clay so that they could use as a base for their nest. We had to really use our problem solving and design skills to create a nest. As the children explored the clay they talked about how it felt to touch and how the clay was sometimes difficult to manipulate.

This week we began our ‘Fine Motor Olympics’. We placed different activities around the table designed to strengthen the children’s finger muscles and hand strength. The children then had to complete each activity and set it up ready for the next person before moving on to the next station.

There were different sorting and classifying activities out for the children to explore this week. We loved watching the different ways the farm animals could be grouped on the farm cards.

This week home corner has become a vet centre. There were lots of animals that needed some medical attention and luckily the Cottage children could help. One patient needed his teeth cleaned so fortunately some children stepped into the role of being a dentist so they could show the rat how to brush his teeth. The children decided that the animals needed a place to rest and recover, so we added some baskets as beds so that the animals could be more comfortable while they rested.

During Art this week, Mrs Browne gave the children straws to blow different coloured dyes across the page. As the colours mixed the children talked about the changes they could see. Next week they are going to look at the shape of their art work and add different collage materials to their work to create a multi-media piece of art.

The gardens have grown over the holidays and we were surprised to find a crop of very small strawberries. After we harvested them, some of the children had a taste, assuring me that they were very yummy strawberries. We also noticed that the bean and pea seeds we had planted had grown. The children did some weeding and watering to help the plants grow even bigger.

During our Maths groups the children played some number and shape games. We have begun looking at numbers 11-20. The children completed different number puzzles as they counted and ordered the numbers 1-20.

In Music the children were excited as they came to the last page of ‘Brown Bear, Brown Bear’. They tried to guess the last animal Brown Bear would see. It was a goldfish. The children played cymbals as they pretended to be fish, dancing around the room. As they met their fishy friends they had to tap each other’s cymbals. They then sang ‘Once I Caught a Fish Alive’.
