COMMUNITY SERVICE The Compass Public Charter School’s mission is to prepare each child with a personal compass that will guide them in life’s directions. We want to develop students who are competent, confident, productive and responsible young adults who possess the habits, skills and attitudes to succeed in life. One part of the compass that we feel will achieve this mission is through acts of service. Therefore, community service is a requirement for our high school program. What activities can be considered as community service? Community service hours constitute as working out in the community and/or for families that requires going above and beyond what is usually expected of them. Community service hours can be gained by working at a food shelter, cleaning houses, raking yards, helping out at church, etc. If the student gets paid for any of these services then it is not considered community service. If a student has completed an Eagle Scouts Project, we will only accept 50% of those hours. How many hours are required? At the end of the student’s 10th grade year, they should have completed 80 hours of community service. The student is required to complete 40 hours for their 9th grade year and 40 for their 10th grade year. We will accept up to 10 hours more (50 hours) that will roll over into the next school year. We want the students to continue community service throughout their academic career to develop the habit of contributing to the community as a lifestyle rather than something they no longer have to think about once it is crossed off the list. Can the student complete hours during the summer? Yes, students can work on their community service hours during the summer. The hours run from June to June. That means that if the student is going to be a Freshman, then they can work on their hours the summer before their Freshman year. Can the student use hours accumulated at their job as community service hours? No, students cannot use hours at work as community service hours. We want the student to serve the community in addition to the other responsibilities they have as students. It is our goal that they create a habit of serving and that it continues on into their adult lives. It is good time management practice for them. What if the student doesn’t complete the required hours? The community service hours are for credit. Therefore, if the student doesn’t complete the 80 required hours then they do not receive credit. They need to meet the 2 credits to graduate. If the student doesn’t complete the 40 hours required for the year, then the student will receive an F (Fail) until the hours have been completed. When the hours have been submitted, the F (Fail) will then turn into a P (Pass) and they will receive the credit. Freshman Sophomore Total
