PROJECT OVERVIEW PROJECT SITE The Castro Muni Station lies in the heart of the Castro neighborhood providing public transportation access to residents and visitors alike.

PROJECT AND ACCESSIBILITY NEEDS The Castro neighborhood is heavily visited via the Muni Metro. The Castro Muni Station was built in 1972: • The existing elevators that serve the Station are outdated and do not meet current building code and accessibility requirements. • There is no elevator that serves the Street and Concourse levels on the south side of the Station. • There is no accessible path from the busy corner of Market and Castro Streets to the south entrance of the Station and Harvey Milk Plaza. • It is SFMTA’s goal to provide uninterrupted elevator access.

SCOPE OF WORK To add a new elevator and accessible path on the south-side of the Station only. Harvey Milk Plaza re-design and modification are not part of the scope of work for this project.

PRIMARY PROJECT GOALS • Provide a new elevator on the south side of Market Street to meets current code and accessibility requirements. The elevator will serve the street, concourse and platform levels of Castro Station. Create an accessible path from the corner of Market and Castro Streets. • Provide an elevator that integrates with the Castro Community and Harvey Milk Plaza.

TRANSIT SYSTEM-WIDE ELEVATOR /ESCALATOR PROJECTS SFMTA’s goal and standard is to provide uninterrupted elevator access at each level in all underground stations. This standard has been adopted by The Central Subway Project. SFMTA is working to incorporate the standard in existing stations by upgrading existing elevators or adding new elevators. This is a list of projects: ELEVATOR UPGRADES

ELEVATORS SFMTA SUBWAY SAFETY AND RELIABILITY UPGRADE PROJECT Modifications to 12 elevators at the following stations: • Van Ness • Church • Castro • Forest Hill Station POWELL STATION PLATFORM ELEVATOR PROJECT Installation of a new elevator at Powell Station which will serve the Mezzanine, Muni Platform and BART Platform levels. VAN NESS STATION STREET ELEVATOR REPLACEMENT / RELOCATION PROJECT Replacement of existing Van Ness Station Street Elevator with two new street elevators at an alternate location. This work is in conjunction with The One Oak Project. CENTRAL SUBWAY PROJECT Installation of new elevators and escalators for three new subway stations. ESCALATORS ESCALATOR MODERNIZATION PROJECT PHASE II The scope includes replacement of 17 escalators in the subway system.
