Health Ministry STAYING WELL DURING FLU AND COLD SEASON It is the season of runny noses, coughs, fevers, body aches, vomiting, diarrhea and numerous other ailments. While the cold weather outside manages to exterminate the mosquitoes and other pests it encourages people to stay inside where other little ““bugs”” flourish!! Here are some common-sense liturgical practices to help everyone stay healthy and to care for one another during flu season and throughout the year. How is the influenza virus transmitted? According to the Centers for Disease Control, influenza viruses are spread when a person who has the flu coughs, sneezes, or speaks and spreads the virus into the air, and other people inhale the virus. The viruses can also be spread when a person touches a surface with flu viruses on it (for example, a door handle) and then touches his or her nose or mouth. Adults with the flu virus may be contagious from one day before developing symptoms to up to seven days after getting sick. Children can be contagious for longer than seven days. How can you protect yourself and your family? First and foremost: GET THE FLU SHOT!! This is the #1 way to protect yourself and your family from a number of the flu strains. If you are sick, take care of yourself. We care for the Body of Christ by first taking care of our own body. The obligation to participate in Mass is not required for those who are sick. If you are sick, do not worsen your illness by trying to get to church, and do not put others at risk of catching your illness. It is not sinful to miss Mass if you are sick; it is an act of charity. If your children are sick, keep them home from Mass, religious education, or youth ministry meetings. If you are seriously ill, the Church wants to celebrate with you the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. You can arrange for this by contacting your parish office. Don’’t cough or sneeze into your hands. Use a tissue to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, then throw it away. If you don’’t have a tissue handy, do what school children are taught to do: cough or sneeze into your shirt sleeve and avoid touching the area of fabric you coughed into. Wash your hands often, especially if you are a greeter, usher, or Communion minister. Wash your hands often and/or use hand sanitizer. Many of the viruses are spread through contact with a bug on a surface then we touch our eyes, nose or mouth and voila –– you are now hosting a viral party!! Soap, water, and a good scrubbing are the best defense against the cold and flu viruses. Scrub your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If you are not near soap and water, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer or disposable hand wipe. Keep a small bottle or packet in your purse or pocket. Avoid shaking hands with others before, during, and after Mass if you are sick or have been in direct contact with someone who sick. At the Sign of Peace, you can offer a smile or a wave or a simple bow of the head to those around you. If you have come in direct contact with someone who has been sneezing or coughing, avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with your hands until you can wash them. This is a good practice at any time since germs can spread when we touch our eyes, nose, or mouth. Respect should be given to individuals who refrain from sharing a handshake at the Sign of Peace. Keep surfaces clean: The surfaces at church are cleaned and sanitized by our staff and our volunteers. Wipe down surfaces with a bleach solution. There aren’’t many viruses that bleach can’’t eradicate. Keep antibacterial wipes nearby and use liberally especially at stores to wipe down cart handles and hands after touching merchandise. Keep your immune system in fighting form by getting plenty of exercise, eating healthy and getting good sleep. This is at the discretion of each individual person. If you have any questions you can contact Michelle Ritter RN at 314-837-3165 or [email protected].

ARE YOU A NURSE OR EMT?? If so we are asking for your assistance to help during the weekend masses. Christ called us to preach, to teach and to heal. Occasionally while mass is being said an emergency situation arises that requires a special kind of gift ~ the gift of healing. We are blessed in our parish with an abundance of those who were called to heal. We are reorganizing our current system and are in need of volunteers who are willing to give aid to those in need during mass when needed. We will be meeting on February 3rd to solidify our policies and procedures along with the ushers. Please join us and help us to promote ““healing”” for our fellow parishioners. If you would like more information please call Michelle Ritter RN at 314-837-3165 or at [email protected]

ANNUAL MEN’’S CLUB

CHILI COOK-OFF WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 5 All the men of the Parish are invited to attend and compete in the Annual Men’’s Club Chili cook-off on Wednesday, February5, in the Duchesne Center at 7:00 PM. This will coincide with our February Men’’s Club Meeting. If you don’’t have a favorite chili recipe, come by anyway and cast your vote. There have been some very good recipes the last couple of years and the competition has been tight. This is always a great time so feel free to come and bring a friend. Also, if you won last year, please bring the trophy back.

UPDATE MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION Does our Church database have YOUR family membership record correct? Here is your chance to update YOUR record for our annual Guide Book & Directory (if you haven’’t already done so). It is time for us to update our database with any changes, additions, or deletions that may have occurred in YOUR family over the past year. Have you changed your phone number? Have you moved? Are you preparing to move soon? Are all of your children still at home and are they all included in your membership record? Do you want your record published? If you have not already informed the Church Office about changes to your record, please let us know now so that the information in the Guide Book & Directory is correct. The deadline for changes in the directory for this year is January 31. Call the Parish Office at 314-837-3165.

HELP WANTED The North County Senior Ministry is in need of volunteers for our Job Squad and Transportation programs. Most of the requests that I have been receiving are asking for help with housekeeping and errand running. The time commitment is flexible and you are free to say ““No”” to any request. We are also looking for people who are interested in working for our seniors at lower rate of pay. All volunteers and referrals will be subject to a background check for the safety of our seniors. Please contact Michelle Ritter R. N. at 837-3165 or [email protected]. God Bless.

From the Desk of Father Jack ... WHY DO YOU GO TO CHURCH? Flannery O’’Connor described an exchange with a relative’’s non-Catholic husband, who entered the church after years of attending Mass with his wife. When asked what changed his mind, he said, ““The sermons were so horrible I knew there must be something else there to make people come””. So why do you come? Is it merely out of obligation or fear of hell? Is it because it’’s what you’’ve always done? Is it to give an example to your children? Is it part of the ritual that precedes going out for breakfast? Is it to see friends? After all the changes in the church and in the Mass, some helpful and some harmful, and after all the mistakes that are made by priests and ministers during Masses and after all the scandals of recent years in the church what keeps you coming? If you are coming for the right reasons then Pope Francis urges you to get out there and spread the news. I am so grateful for the life and experience that God has given me that I just want to shout out my thanks and let others know how powerful God’’s activity can be. I could never have had the adventures I’’ve had nor seen the wonders I’’ve witnessed without risking faith in God. Pope Francis keeps proclaiming that we have been given so much and we have so much to give. Why do you go to church? I go because He has given me so much and I want to keep giving also.

PRO-LIFE MARCH We congratulate our youth for representing us at this year’’s Pro-Life March in Washington, D.C. The unborn are at the top of the Lord’’s list and we need to keep fighting for the dignity of all human beings born and unborn. It is so distressing to hear the rhetoric about women’’s productive rights. Their rights need to co-exist and not supersede the rights of the unborn. I told the story from the pulpit of the heroic young woman who had cancer and the drugs etc. were supposed to make her unable to become pregnant. Well guess what, the doctors were wrong. The doctors told her that they could not continue cancer treatment while she was pregnant. So their answer was abortion!? In the face of a stable of specialists she said ““I carry the baby””. And she did bring into this world a beautiful boy Tristan. But, because she had to suspend her drug regimen the cancer took over and she died after his first birthday. They can talk all they want about woman’’s rights but this young woman was ““right””! Thank God for courageous women and for repentant women who have found the value of life. I want to thank our students and our chaperones for their example of ““standing up for life”” at the Pro-Life March in D.C. Special thanks goes to our Youth Minister Eileen Weiskopf and their chaplain Fr. Nickolai. It was a cold day in Washington, D.C. on January 22nd but a warm day in heaven!

ST. LOUIS REVIEW It’’s that time of the year again! It’’s subscription renewal time for the St. Louis Review. Pope Francis has been making church life interesting. Get in on real papal news! Don’’t believe all you hear in the secular press. I encourage your renewal of $30. There is an envelope in your packet. Or else, you can drop an envelope in the basket marked St. Louis Review. St. Ferdinand furnishes the paper to all who contribute but we ask that, if you can afford it, please offer payment. It’’s not fair to have other parishioners pay for your subscription. But we are more than happy to subsidize those who are unable to pay. Get the news and spread the Good News!

NOW IT’’S EVEN EASIER TO USE YOUR PHONE TO GIVE TO THE CHURCH Go to www.steferdinandstl.org and sign up for online giving. Simply click on ““create an account””. Then, enter the needed information, and submit. You will get an email with a verification link to finish setting up your account. If you do not see the email, check your spam folder. It’’s that simple to give anytime and from anywhere using a computer, smartphone or tablet.

They have consistently over many years delivered to our church beautiful, healthy plants on Christmas Eve morning and their friendly, helpful staff is a pleasure to work with. Anyone wanting to take a Poinsettia/s home can do so. We ask you to only take the ones on the floor in the Gathering Space. Do not take any on the floor around the Poinsettia Tree or from the Church Sanctuary. We plan to keep those, as long as, they continue to look lovely.
