AVID Community Service One of the requirements of AVID is that you give back to the community. This will benefit you in numerous ways, including: 1. Building a professional network, resulting in potential sources for letters of recommendation for college and scholarship applications. 2. Developing and improving leadership skills. 3. Advancing communication skills with adults and peers. 4. Providing opportunities to work in a field you are interested and potentially want to pursue after college. 5. Contributing positively to a community and gaining a sense of service to that community. Requirements: 1. You must complete 40 hours of community service before the completion of this academic year. a. 20 hours in each semester b. Any hours that were completed during the summer of 2014 (June 20-Sept. 2, 2014) will count for the 1st semester hours c. Hours not completed in the 1st semester will be added to 2nd semester 2. You must complete the AVID Community Service Log and turn in to your AVID teacher at the following times: a. 2nd Quarter Interim b. End of 2nd Semester c. End of 3rd Quarter d. End of 4th Quarter 3. If the organization/activity is not on the accompanying list or sponsored by AVID, it must be preapproved by your AVID teacher. 4. Your parent/guardian must sign below, acknowledging that they are aware you are performing community service as a member of OHS AVID. Accountability: 1. 20 hours of community service = 100 points in the Projects category (1 hour = 5 points) a. Must complete 20 hours in each semester b. If you do not perform 20 hours in 1st semester, the hours roll in to 2nd semester, but the points cannot be made up.
