Upcoming Services April 2 Hope Springs Eternal. There is no guarantee things will turn out as we wish, so we hope, accompanied by an unconscious apprehension, laced with fear, about outcome. We will explore some Buddhist concepts to help us explore the meaning of hope so that we live life more fully. Luis Sierra, Adirondack Yoga teacher, helps us invite back spring. April 9 Cherokee Celebration of Spring. Kim and Eddy Lawrence will lead us in celebrating the spring awakening of the Earth and ourselves, with a special focus on water as life. This service will include songs, dances and teachings from the Cherokee tradition.

April 16 “Alive Again”. The Easter story — fact, fiction, myth — is deeply and humanly wise. In troubled times, “when hope is hard to find,” how might it speak to our lives? The Rev. Sandra Fitz-Henry will be our speaker. April 23 Quality of life is CHOICE. If we want to support diversity in our community, we need to understand that our privileges are not universal. Nick Dubay, Chair of the Anti-Stigma Coalition of Clinton County, and program administrator and recovery coach trainer with Impeerium is our presenter. April 30 David Stone and Jean Ann Hunt will be our presenters.

Family Ministry and Children's Religious Education Nursery: Sabrina Burgess, Grace Suarez and Ella Archer continue to provide care for infants and toddlers. Pre-school-first grade and 4th-6th grades will begin “Spirit Play,” based on the work of Maria Montessori. Each Sunday the group leader will tell a story drawn from a different religious or philosophical tradition. Each story will illustrate some aspect of social justice activism. After the story children will be provided with a wide variety of dramatic, art and craft materials with which to explore their responses to the story. On Easter Sunday we’ll focus on stories reflecting Jesus’ teaching. And we’ll have an Easter Egg Hunt! Sunday, May 7: Multigenerational service created by our youth. Sunday, June 4: Multigenerational service is the last RE Sunday until fall. We’ll be acknowledging participants in our RE program and “bridging” Connor Giltz, as he graduates from high school.

Sunday, August 6: Multigenerational service with the Canton and Saranac Lake congregations at the Meacham Lake Campground.

Friday, August 11-Sunday, August 13: Camping at Ausable Point. Each family can make their own reservations. I’ve reserved two sites, #78 and #79. I have extra camping equipment if you need July 9-15: RE Week at Ferry Beach. anything. I’ll have a campfire each night (and s’mores). Join me! President’s Message These are exciting times to be a part of the the UUFP; energy is blowing in many different directions. We are looking for a new building, searching for a minister, and flying our rainbow flag in celebration of becoming a Welcoming Congregation. Three members are studying to become Commissioned Lay Leaders and our new committee, Standing on the Side of Love, is actively working for social justice. This is a great time to be president of the UUFP. Congratulations to all and keep up the spirit! Sincerely, Ursula, President UUFP Board of Trustees

Update on the Search for a New Home We learned that the St. Joseph's Church property on Military Turnpike just south of Rugar Street would be coming on the market within our price range. The UUFP Board and other Fellowship members who responded to the announcement at last Sunday Service toured the property Monday and Tuesday, March 20 and 21. The 10,000 square foot building on 3.2 acres met our identified space requirements and handicap access needs with minor modifications. The Board will meet March 27 to review our findings and recommend next steps. Details on another option to develop our Kansas Avenue property within our original budget allowance are also being pursued. Hopefully, we will be in possession of enough information by our meeting date to determine whether this may offer an alternate solution. The possibility of an arrangement to use the Synagogue remains open, but that community has not yet decided on a course of action appropriate for them. Please contact any board member if you have questions or comments.

Community Meal The next Community Meal is scheduled for Wednesday, April 19, at Trinity Episcopal Church. If you’d like to try helping out, email Mary Dufort at [email protected]. She will add you to her list of helpers and then you can choose when you’d like to help. We begin preparing the food at 3 p.m., setting the dining room at 4:15, serving at 5:15 p.m., and cleaning up starts at 5:30 p.m. You can come at any time and help in any way that you would like. Please contact Mary Dufort if you are interested and able to join us.

Forget Me Nots Spring Honoree: Michelle Ouellette Michelle Ouellette is an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Plattsburgh. She is married to Steve and has two sons, Ben and Kurt. Michelle is an Assistant Professor in Journalism and Public Relations at SUNY Plattsburgh. Prior to her current position she served as Director of Public Relations at SUNY. Her contributions to the congregation span many years and a variety of activities. Michelle currently leads the Membership Cluster with skill and grace. She has revitalized our procedures for greeting visitors and worked hard to make our congregation welcoming to all. With Michelle’s leadership, the Membership Cluster has created and implemented strategies for growing a committed congregation. Michelle also in a member of the Council on Shared Ministry and our Communication Committee. She has been essential in improving the effectiveness of the congregations’ communications and public presence over the last few years. She currently is working hard with our social justice initiative, Standing on the Side of Love, and advocating for religious activism. In the past Michelle has been an active member of the Religious Education Committee and our Youth Group leader. That's a lot! However, there are two outstanding qualities for which Michelle deserves our moist grateful recognition. First, she is a person to whom you could point and say "there is our faith in action.” She lives UU principles in her interpersonal relationships, in her relationship to our congregation and in her work in the larger world. She is a gracious and loving person. Second, Michelle and Steve are raising two sons who demonstrate many of the same qualities. The boys are growing up as UUs and growing into roles in the congregation and the community which make us all proud. What better contribution could anyone make!

Strand Theatre to Host “Chasing the Dragon: The Life of an Opiate Addict” April 4 at 7:00 p.m. In an effort to combat the growing epidemic of prescription drug and heroin abuse, the FBI and DEA have released "Chasing the Dragon: The Life of an Opiate Addict," a documentary aimed at educating students and young adults about the dangers of addiction. More information can be found at www.fbi.gov/ChasingTheDragon. Plattsburgh’s Strand Theater will feature a viewing of the documentary. Standing on the Side of Love, UU Fellowship of Plattsburgh Religious Activism: Political, Not Partisan A very passionate group of members and friends met recently to explore religious activism. We have formed a subcommittee of our Social Justice Committee and we invite you to join us. We are the Standing on the Side of Love (SSL) Planning Group. At our most recent meeting on March 19, the Rev. Evin Carville-Ziemer guided us through meaningful small-group exercises in which we explored our deep values that call us to act. Our public Facebook page promotes love and compassion for all, regardless of affiliation or personal beliefs. You can find us at: https://www.facebook.com/LovePlattsburgh/ . Our group is growing — some folks attend our planning group; others choose to engage through our private Facebook planning group site and take action daily. We’ll keep you posted on upcoming SSL Planning Group meetings. Want to learn more about us? Contact [email protected]. Or speak with Mary Dufort, Julia Giltz, Nancy Lewin, Michelle Ouellette, Jo El Miano, Kathy Sajor, Jeff Hornibrook, Margaret Schwartz . . . to name just a few. Go to http://www.uua.org/pressroom/stories/religious-activism-political-not-partisan for the UUA’s take on religious activism for social justice issues.

Men's and Women's Clothing Needed for Local Trans Community Recently a member of the transgender community wrote to us asking for help. Many of our trans neighbors are having a hard time finding clothing because of limited incomes and prejudicial encounters when shopping for second-hand clothes. Would you like to help? Rather than doing a clothing drive and gathering up clothes that may or may not fit, we may periodically put out a call for donations. This is one of those times. Needed to help two individuals: Women’s clothes ranging from size 16 to 22 in pants and anything else in a 2x to 3x. Men's clothes ranging XL to 2XL. (Shirts sized 3XL would work, too.) Pants with a 44 waist between 28 and 30 in length. If you have something you would like to donate, please contact Michelle at [email protected]. Thanks for your help.

Confirm Your Pledge Amount As was previously reported, UUFP is changing its fiscal calendar from July-June to January-December. Don’t forget to contact Nancy Lewin ([email protected] or text 518-645-1918) to let her know if you would like to keep your pledge payments at the same level from June-December of 2017. You should also contact her if you do not currently pledge and would like to do so. This fall we will hold a pledge drive to cover Jan.-Dec. 2018. Pledging is a form of covenant that strengthens the health of the UUFP and our relationship with each other. As was emphasized in a recent service, collaboration is our spiritual practice that elevates each of us into that realm of that which is greater than ourselves.

Sunday, April 23 is April Stools’ Day, 1-3 p.m. Yes, dog doo is gross! Especially if you step in it. What's worse is that pet poop left behind on trails and in our parks enters streams, rivers and Lake Champlain, which nearly 200,000 people rely upon for their drinking water. LCC doggedly urges citizens to take action by lending a hand at April Stools' Day to clean up parks and trails and protect waterways! The Lake Champlain Committee will provide gloves, bags, trowels, pails, and hand sanitizer. We’ll be picking up pet poop and any litter we find along the way. Let Mary Dufort ([email protected]) know if you are interested in helping, we will then pick an area to work and let volunteers know where to come.

The Lyrical Imagery of the Phil Henry Acoustic Trio Coming to Palmer Street Coffeehouse The crowd-pleasing, story-telling Phil Henry Acoustic Trio will return to Palmer Street Coffeehouse at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 7. The band is an accomplished trio led by singersongwriter Phil Henry, who teaches at West Rutland High School in Vermont. Seven Days magazine called him “first and foremost, a storyteller,” citing Henry’s “vivid lyrical imagery that captures the imagination.” Henry will be joined by Gary Moon — on djembe, cajon, high hat, tambourine and shakers — and Jeff Kimball — on piano, accordion and mandolin. Henry is the winner of the highest prize at the Solarfest Renewable Energy music festival as well as of the Susquehanna Music and Arts Festival songwriting contest, and his latest album “Aberdeen” charted No. 25 on the folk charts. “Thanks to years of formal training, his arrangements and melodies are works of real craftsmanship,” said Sarah Craig, director of the Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs, New York. “Combine that with his playful and compassionate nature, and it’s no surprise that Phil is finding his way onto the best folk stages.” Henry has opened for big names in folk music, including Richard Shindell, Vance Gilbert, Peter Mulvey, Cliff Eberhardt and Rachel Bissex. His song “Broken” was also featured on National Public Radio. The trio’s latest project is available for pre-order and includes a concert film. To learn more about the Phil Henry Acoustic Trio, visit http://www.philhenryband.com. This is the 29th season for the coffeehouse, known for its acoustic music. It operates on the first Friday of each month, October through June, in the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at 4 Palmer St. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the event begins at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $10.

Join the UU Book Club on April 12 The next meeting of the UU Book Club will be at Palmer St. at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 12. This month we will each talk about a book we’ve read and enjoyed. We’re always looking for more participants. Come join the discussion and bring your reading suggestions.
