F ROM

THE

P ASTOR

Big decisions are never easy to make. They take serious consideration and the courage to accept the consequences of what is chosen. The drama of Holy week and Easter required many people to make a decision for or against Jesus. On the first Palm Sunday Martha, Mary, and Lazarus (whom the Lord resurrected from the rot of the grave) gratefully cared for Jesus before his final journey to Jerusalem. Judas response to their lavish anointing is to duplicitously complain about the expense, even though he would betray the Lord of Life for far less, leading St. Thomas Aquinas to comment: “Frequently the servants of Satan disguise themselves as servants of righteousness.” The Gospel continues with this shocking description: “And the chief priests plotted to kill Lazarus too, because many were turning away and believing in Jesus because of him.” On Good Friday Pilate must choose for Truth or political expediency. Human frailty, also, haunts the Apostles in their decision to follow the Lord, even after they try and fail time and again to do what is right. Finally, On Easter morning, Mary Magdalene and the Apostles—in fact, every disciple from that day until today—must decide for him or herself the meaning of the empty tomb. Big decisions about our direction in life are not easy to make, particularly today. A friend of mine who taught at a local college once explained that to merely disagree with a colleague in a faculty meeting was viewed not as the process of reasoned discourse or even the search for a solution to a problem, but as an insult. It is ironic that in this day where each individual is expected to make his or her own truth, it is heresy to claim to have found the Truth. Pope Francis recently described this attitude as the “Tyranny of small mindedness…that steals our freedom to choose” the culturally uncomfortable position that Jesus is God among us. Not one more philosopher or founder of a worthy movement, but God the Son who died and rose to reconcile us with the Father and open to us Eternal Life with Him. The empty tomb requires us to choose. After all tombs are not meant to be empty, otherwise that whole pyramid thing would prove to be a colossal waste of time! We must seriously choose for or against the claims of Jesus; for or against the possibility of letting go of our sins; for or against the gift of Eternal Life. As Pope Benedict XVI once taught: “God exists; this is the real message of Easter. Anyone who even begins to grasp what this means also knows what it means to be redeemed.” May God bless you and your family with a Happy Easter today and for all the days to come!

From The Cardinal’s Office Effective May 1, 2014, Father Patrick Armano has been appointed part-time Parochial Vicar at St. Athanasius. He will also be serving as part-time Parochial Vicar at St. Paul Parish in Cambridge. I pray that he will render fine priestly service to the people of God at Saint Athanasius. 3

Meet Fr. Art.

Bringing Christ’s Presence to the Frontlines A native of Brookline, Fr. Arthur “Art” Calter grew up as the youngest of five children. Following the example of his two older brothers who became priests, Fr. Calter entered St. John’s Seminary in 1951. Upon his ordination, Fr. Calter poured himself into ministry at parishes in Marlborough, Salem, Needham, and Braintree. With the war in Vietnam gaining momentum, Fr. Calter was struck that so many young men in his parishes were being drafted. Moved by the desire to bring the presence of Christ to the trenches, Fr. Calter became a Chaplain in the U.S. Army. He served two tours of duty embedded with infantrymen and marines in the jungle where he would celebrate up to twelve Masses in one day. Fr. Calter’s time in Vietnam prepared him for a different kind of battle back at home—his next assignment in South Boston where he served as pastor of St. Augustine Parish during the height of the busing crisis. In a career spanning more than five decades, Fr. Calter has been a pastor at five parishes and has worked with thousands of families and individuals. He currently resides at Regina Cleri, a retirement home for senior priests in Boston, where 53 residents represent 1.2 million days of priesthood. At the Easter collection, please consider a generous gift in honor of Fr. Calter and the 638 priests of our Archdiocese who bring the presence of Christ to all who seek His compassion and care. To watch a short video featuring Fr. Calter, and to learn more about the priests who faithfully serve us each day, please visit our website: www.clergyfunds.org. Thank you for your generous support of Fr. Calter and all our priests through the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust.
