F ROM THE PASTOR

The Resurrection of the Body Each week, in the Profession of Faith, we recite that final line and statement of truth: “I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.” One time as a boy, I remember wondering if that referred to Jesus, whose Resurrection brings us all together today, or something else referring to us as human beings. It turns out that that memory served me well in a conversation recently that could have started with the opening line: “A Jew, a Baptist, and a Catholic priest walked into a Boston Irish bar one evening…” That was actually the scenario as the Baptist and I compared notes on our respective “ecclesial communions.” The conversation moved in various directions (as often happens with me) and touched on the culmination of history and how we creatures of God participate in it. To which my friend said, “Wait a second, we don’t rise from the dead. Jesus did. We just go to Heaven.” My memory of youth was helpful because this is something we may not absorb from our Catholic experience or catechesis. The part of the Creed that states: “He suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures,” obviously refers to Our Lord and to that first Easter morning. However, that final line refers to us...more precisely, how we share in Christ’s saving work on our behalf. I informed my friend that whether he knew it or not, he believed in the resurrection of the body, too, like all Christians do…or at least he should! I am curious, in fact, to know what his pastor believes as a benchmark for how much of the genuine faith has been lost in modern times. One of our problems as modern Christians is that we tend to look at history as locked in the past: an event or series of events strung together to get us to where we are today. Of course, God, who created time itself and so is outside of and beyond time, just sees all of our history as one moment. More correctly, the Lord is the one driving Salvation History, so these are not mere events, but His work to reconcile a fallen world to Himself. People have so many questions that cause them to doubt God, but those questions are asked from our perspective, not God’s. A better question is: “Why would God let his creation, something which must be important to him or he would not have made it, languish in suffering and death?” The answer is that He doesn’t. A perfect example of how many mistakenly view history differently than God and the Church is seen at the Easter Vigil, when converts have traditionally been baptized into the Faith. The accounts of Noah’s Ark and the parting of the Red Sea are recalled because they foreshadow Baptism (see 1 Peter 3:21). Most people only consider these stories as to how or whether they occurred; others may correctly see their meaning in God’s fidelity to his people; but few know the deeper meaning of those stories as pointing to their fulfillment in Christ and the saving grace of Baptism. No event in history by God is static; they teach us something of who He is eternally, otherwise it wouldn’t have happened! If this is the case with ancient events involving ancient people, it applies infinitely more to the Resurrection of Our Lord, since it happened to He who is God Among Us. St. Paul teaches, “If Christ has not been raised from the dead, our faith is in vain.” In the final analysis, it all boils down to the Resurrection: whether we believe that the tomb was empty that first Easter morning or not. Of course, for God, it’s not that difficult a miracle-- no different than any other action He does in history. However, for us it is everything, because it is not merely an event to recall, but the overcoming and transformation of a fallen world. An event that ripples through all of time showing us how God will not allow his creation to languish and suffer, and how we, too, will share in that transformation. Otherwise, He would not have done it.

Have a Blessed Easter! 3

There does not seem to be much of a connection between Easter and rabbits, chocolate, egg hunts and parades. But as children, these things stood in stark contrast to the long and dark services of Holy Week, and the Lenten fast which we had to observe—especially in school when there was no dessert or candy sold in the cafeteria! It may not be a theological connection, but it certainly was one we experienced as the joy and happiness of Easter replaced the solemnity of Lent. Easter is a time of renewal and hope. Jesus did not die and rise for Himself. He did it for us so that we can share in His victory and in His life forever. One way we can celebrate is practice a little renewal in our own lives. Lent ends, but the results of our sacrifice and penance should remain. If we worked to be more patient, continue to practice patience. If our goal was to pray more often, set the time aside that you need. If the purpose of our Lenten practice was to make us healthier, holier, or happier, don’t stop! We share in the Lord’s victory over sin and death in small ways, conquering our own faults and failings with God’s grace. Keep the momentum of Lent throughout Easter so that the pain and struggle of your sacrifice will bring you the joy of renewal. ~James Gaffney, St. George Publishing
