THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

The Santa Sophia Academy along with the Santa Sophia parish community celebrate Catholic Schools Week next week. The theme for this year is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge, and Service.” It is a week-long celebration, which gives us an opportunity to honor the mission of Catholic education, especially here at Santa Sophia Academy, given its significance to our children and to our parish community. Catholic schools play an important role in the Church, and knowing this, Pope Francis reminded Catholic educators at the World Congress held in Rome in November 2016 to know the spiritual and corporal works of mercy and offer them to students in Catholic schools as practical examples of how to live the Gospel. He said, “By teaching the Good News of the Gospel, Catholic educators guide our students to Jesus Christ and His healing mercy.” Catholic Schools Week is also a good opportunity for us at Santa Sophia to understand our role and support and appreciate our teachers and staff for their commendable job in helping our children to grow spiritually and intellectually. What do we do during Catholic Schools Week? I invite you to

make an effort to say “thank you” to our Academy staff when you see them around and stop by the Academy and visit the classrooms to see the wonderful paintings and artwork of our children. The readings today remind us that Christ has brought us from the darkness of sin into the Light by calling us to repentance and the acceptance of God’s rule. The first reading contains the prophetic reference to Christ as the Light that dispels darkness. Matthew wanted his readers to recognize that the Light Isaiah had spoken of had finally appeared with the coming of Jesus. In his prophetic mind, Isaiah sees this as if it has already happened: "The people who walked in darkness have seen a great Light. . . .” The Light he is talking about is the Light of Christ that scatters the darkness of ignorance and sin. The second reading advises the Corinthians to live as children of the Light, avoiding divisions and rivalries, because several factions had arisen among the Corinthian Christians, each claiming allegiance to its first Christian teacher or to a particular Apostle. Paul wanted the Christians to rise above these immature rivalries and to follow the humility and obedience of Jesus who had emptied Himself for them all. Paul argued that people who live in the Light must avoid divisions and rivalries. Christ (Continues on page three…)

cannot be divided, nor can His message be changed to suit its hearers.

1st Reconciliation Retreat for Parents & Candidates

In today's Gospel passage, Matthew explains that what had been prophesied by Isaiah was fulfilled through the preaching and healing ministry of Jesus. By His ministry of inviting people to the kingdom of God by repentance, Jesus brought light to people living in darkness, thus fulfilling God’s original promise. The second part of the Gospel describes the call of the first disciples, and Jesus' own teaching and healing ministry, inviting people to repent of their sins and accept the Good News of God’s rule, which He was preaching. The disciples were ordinary fishermen with no formal training but were chosen to preach the Good News. God calls ordinary people and makes them extraordinary, because we are all called to be teachers, called to know and bear witness to the truth, Jesus Christ, and to become effective witnesses to the Gospel.

On Tues, Jan 24th from 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. there will be a retreat evening in Prendergast Hall. This retreat evening is for all parents and candidates in grade 2 or higher registered with Religious Education or attending the Academy. Looking forward to seeing you there!

As we celebrate Catholic Schools Week, the readings remind us that we are called by God, both individually and collectively. The call is both a privilege and responsibility. The mission of preaching, teaching and healing which Jesus began in Galilee is now the responsibility of the Church and of each individual. Our response to the call begins with our Baptism and that response is strengthened by the Eucharist and other Sacraments. As we celebrate Catholic Schools Week let us thank God for our faith and our Academy and its service to our parish community. Knowing our responsibility, let us assist our children to grow in faith and to understand and appreciate God’s mercy.

THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

JANUARY 22, 2017

Annual Stewardship Renewal In this fourth weekend of the Annual Stewardship Renewal campaign we are reminded that Jesus brought the light of hope to a weary world. This is reflected in the Church Jesus built with His Apostles. These Apostles were called by the Son of God and they answered Him. As members of this Church, we are all called by God but how do we answer Him? Please dedicate some of your time this week to pray, reflect on Sunday’s readings and examine your own spiritual formation (through the Sacraments, the Church and its traditions) in the Personal Reflection sheet. Remember to pick up this week’s prayer card, keep it with you and use it throughout the week for those special “prayer opportunities”. We invite all of you to join your fellow parishioners in the Vestibule after the 4:30 p.m. Mass on Saturday, in Prendergast Hall after the 8 a.m. Mass on Sunday and in the Vestibule after the 11 A.m. Mass on Sunday to share your thoughts on formation during this Annual Stewardship Renewal campaign. May God be with and bless you throughout this week.

Connection to Christ Like many people these days, I’m a bit overwhelmed with a busy schedule. There never seems to be enough time to do all I would like to do, and that leaves me with a longing to at least do something meaningful to keep the rest of life in balance. I am longing for a deeper connection to God and to share that experience with others who have a similar desire. With all my involvements and tight schedule, I wondered when I would get a chance to develop connections with companions on the faith journey. Recently I was invited to explore a weekly meeting with fellow parishioners from Santa Sophia who have committed themselves to learning more and sharing their faith journey with others. This sounded like just the opportunity that I had been looking for, and after my husband Rom and I talked it over and prayed about it we made the commitment to meet with a group on Monday evenings. It is called Connection to Christ (C2C) and we have been meeting weekly since the beginning of Advent. Together, we are learning about Jesus mission, how he formed and sent disciples into the world and how we are called to do the same. We pray together, read and meditate on Scripture and share our experiences in a deep and profound way. We will be launching small Lenten groups for our parish, starting the week of February 19th. The groups will meet weekly for the six weeks of Lent and will be following a similar format of meditating on Scripture, discussing it and sharing the gift with others. Unlike other small groups, the focus of Connection to Christ is formation and evangelization. It is equipping us with the tools of the faith so we can grow and in turn, help lead others to Christ, because that is our mission. I have experienced growth in my relationship with Christ by being part of this journey and I encourage you to become a part of it as well. Over the next few weeks, there will be announcements about C2C and sign-up sheets will be made available for those who want to be part of this journey. There will be multiple meeting dates and times available to try to accommodate your schedule. We are all busy and may not think we have time for this, but I want to encourage you to pray about it. Lent is the perfect time to grow closer to Christ and to your fellow parishioners. We are very blessed to have this opportunity at our parish and I hope you will take advantage of the invitation to Connection to Christ, it can change things in your life and bring you and your family closer to Christ. -Kay Smith
