April 3, 2016 Dr. Jim Cecy Faith That Shows (Part One) James 2:14-26 James 2:14-26 What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and be filled,” and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that? Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself. But someone may well say, “You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.” You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder. But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up Isaac his son on the altar? You see that faith was working with his works, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected; and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “AND ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS RECKONED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS,” and he was called the friend of God. You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone. In the same way, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.

I. The Principle Stated (James 2:14) James 2:14 “What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can that faith save him?” WHAT IS TRUE FAITH? In the Bible there are two different ways the Greek word faith is used (the noun pistis or the verb form: pisteuo). In its basic definition the Greek word pisteuo means to believe or have faith. “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the men of old gained approval.” (Hebrews 11:1)

Level #1 Faith: Knowledge Without A Commitment to Action James 2:19 “You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.” James 1:23 “For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror...”

Level #2 Faith: Knowledge Demonstrated By Action Level #1 Faith says: “I believe that the Crucified and Risen Lord Jesus Christ is the Savior of the World.” Level #2 Faith says: “I believe it enough to invite Him to come into my life and take charge.” James 2:14 “What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith (i.e. Level #1: Knowledge) but he has no works (Level #2: Action)? “Can that (Level #1) faith save him?” No one gets to heaven on Level #1 Faith. Paul and James Agree With Each Other Regarding True Faith Roman 5:1 “Therefore having been justified by faith (i.e. Level #2 Faith), we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ...” Ephesians 2:8-9 “For by grace you have been saved through faith (Level #2 Faith); and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast.” Titus 3:5 “He (Christ) saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit...” Galatians 2:21 “...if righteousness comes through the law (i.e. works) then Christ died needlessly.” Both James and Paul would agree that faith is the MEANS of salvation and that works are the PROOF of that kind of Level #2 faith that truly saves. Paul and James Agree with Christ Regarding True Faith Matthew 7:16 “You will know them (i.e. true believers) by their fruits (i.e. the fruit of Level #2 Faith) Matthew 7:21 “Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' (Level #1 Knowledge) will enter the kingdom of heaven; but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven.

II. The Principle Illustrated (James 2:15-26) James’ Art Gallery of True Faith

Faith Portrait #1: True Faith Shows Compassion If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and be filled,” and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that? Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself (James 2:15-17). 1 John 3:17-19 “But whoever has the world's goods, and beholds his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him? Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth. We shall know by this that we are of the truth, and shall assure our heart before Him...” 1 John 4:7-8 “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love.” 1 Thessalonians 4:9 “Now as to the love of the brethren, you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another...” John 13:35 “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” “Kindness is Christianity with its working clothes on.”

Faith Portrait #2: True Faith is Visible But someone may well say, “You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.” (James 2:18) Matthew 5:16 “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” True faith shows!

Faith Portrait #3: True Faith Puts Knowledge Into Action Or Else It Is Useless Religion You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder. But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless? (James 2:19-20) “Ha! What do we have to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” (Luke 4:34) James 2:20 “But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is USELESS?” Level #1 Faith is unprofitable, dry, fruitless and barren
