Pope Francis recently published his apostolic exhortation ‘Evangelii Gaudium’, ‘The Joy of the Gospel.’ We are encouraging parishioners to read this document during the season of Lent . Copies of ‘Evangelii Gaudium’ are available in the sacristy of each church for €5. Also, a section of the exhortation will be made available to take home each Sunday of Lent. The priests of the parish will make an effort to incorporate the weekly section into the homily each week. THE LIGHT IS STILL ON FOR YOU CONFESSIONS FOR LENT A Message from Archbishop Martin When asked by an interviewer who he considered himself to be, Pope Francis surprised many by responding that the best description of himself was: “I am a sinner”. Lent is the season of conversion and return to God. It is a time also in which we can rediscover the joy of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Earlier this year Pope Francis set out a challenge for us all: “I would like to ask you — but don’t say it aloud, everyone respond in his or her own heart: when was the last time you made your confession? Two days, two weeks, two years, twenty years, forty years? And if much time has passed, do not lose another day. Be courageous and go to Confession! Jesus will receive you; he will receive you with so much love”. As Lent comes to a conclusion I have asked a number of Centre City Churches (listed below) in Dublin to provide Confessions continually on the two Final Saturdays of Lent 12th and 19th April, all day from 09.30 until 18.00 There will be a number of confessors available throughout the day so that ample time will be available for a conversation about your life. The Light over the confessional is still on for you and I ask you to make the most of this special occasion of grace. Other parishes may wish to associate themselves with this initiative in their own way. Resources, posters and leaflets are available from the Office of Evangelisation. +Diarmuid Martin, Archbishop of Dublin • Saint Mary’s, Pro-Cathedral Saint Saviours, Dominick Street • Saint Andrew’s, Westland Row Saint Francis Xavier, Gardiner Street • Saint Teresa’s, Clarendon Street Our Lady Queen of Peace, Merrion Rd. • Blessed Sacrament Chapel, Bachelors Walk Saint Joseph’s, Berkely Road • Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Whitefriar St. Our Lady Refuge of Sinners, Rathmines • Saint John’s Priory, Johns Lane Saint Mary’s, Haddington Road

Ten Quotes of Pope Francis About Confession 1. Confession helps people feel shame for the wrong they have done and embraces them with God's love so that they know they are forgiven and can go out strengthened in the battle to avoid sin in the future. 2. If a person, whether a layperson, priest or sister, goes to confession and converts, the Lord forgives. And when the Lord forgives, he forgets. 3. The confessional is not a dry cleaners, a business of sorts that just washes out the stain of sin. 4. When the door starts closing a bit because of our weakness and sins, confession reopens it. 5. I can’t be baptized two or three or four times, but I can go to confession, and when I go to confession, I renew that grace of baptism. 6. It's not a torture chamber where you'll be raked over the coals. 7. Confession is an encounter with Jesus whose mercy motivates us to do better. 8. It's not a psychiatric session that neglects the question of sin or a mental email to God that avoids the face-to-face encounter with the Lord through the priest. 9. The sincere and humble admission of one's weaknesses, of having "a sliver of Satan in my flesh," shows that the power of salvation comes from God, not oneself. 10. Confession is going to praise God, because I -- the sinner -- have been saved by him, who always waits and always forgives with tenderness.
