The Portrait—Part 46

July 21/22, 2012 John 17:1-26

FOLLOWING THE MESSAGE This record of Jesus’ prayer makes it clear—Jesus is the Overcomer. He is not the victim; He is the Victor! 17:1 A servant of God has every right to ask the Father for the help needed to glorify His name. 17:5 Jesus was looking beyond the cross, to the glory waiting for Him upon His return to heaven. 17:6 God’s ‘name’ embodies His character; to reveal God’s name is to make His character, nature, and attributes known. 17:6 Scripture presents the dual realities that God is absolutely sovereign in choosing who will be part of His redeemed people, and also that sinners who reject the gospel bear personal responsibility for refusing God’s offer of salvation. 17:9 God shows love to all people in the world (common grace), even to those who reject the gospel (Mark 10:21); He pleads with sinners to repent (Ezekiel 18:23, 32; Acts 17:30); He extends the gospel invitation to them (Isaiah 55:1; cf. Matthew 11:28–30); He “causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous” (Matthew 5:45; cf. Psalm 145:9; Acts 14:17). But Christ’s intercessory work as High Priest is only for those who belong eternally to Him. 17:11 In the face of His absence (though only for a few hours), Jesus asked the Father to take up the role of protector. 17:13 Understanding the Father’s protection and Christ’s intercession inevitably produces joy in the hearts of those who belong to Him. 17:14 We can be overcome by the world when we do not look into the Word of God, allowing it to enlighten us, to enable us, and to encourage us. 17:15 Believers are permitted neither the luxury of compromise with a world that is intrinsically evil, nor the safety of disengagement.

17:17 It is not enough to be guarded from outside evils. We must also be internally conformed to the Son. 17:18 The purpose of the ‘sanctification’ of His followers is that we are sent By Jesus himself 17:20-23 The exhibition of genuine biblical love among believers testifies that we are Jesus’ own. This is so compelling, so unworldly, that it has the capacity to cause the world to know Jesus. 17:20 Jesus Christ, as our great High Priest, began His work of intercession for us with this request 2,000 years ago. It continues to this day (Hebrews 7:25). 17:22 Despite denominational differences, all true Christians are spiritually united by regeneration in our belief that salvation is by grace alone through faith alone, in Christ alone, and in our commitment to the absolute authority of Scripture. How does spiritual unity show itself in practice? (Philippians 2:2) o Being of the same mind o Maintaining the same love o United in spirit o Intent on one purpose The church’s unity is the foundation of its evangelism; it demonstrates that Christ is the Savior who transforms lives.
