! Director’s*Report* Presented*to*the*GPA*Board*of*Directors* March*2014* * Boys Varsity Soccer- CIF Champions The boys’ soccer team, under the excellent leadership of Head Coach Arturo Herrera has made history at GPA. He has ushered in our first League Champion title, and first CIF Division title. This is what we all hope for our STUDENT-Athletes and our coaches. They have played with honor and their hard work has paid off. This is what all the strength and conditioning, training, hard work and practices has led to. On Friday, March 7th, our boys’ varsity soccer team won the title of CIF Division Champions. They beat Crawford High School 2-0 in an exciting game that was played at Clairemont High School. The undefeated Eagles will be playing in the State Championship tournament starting on March 10th on our GPA field. Congratulations Coach Herrera and to the boys’ varsity soccer team for their excellent display of sportsmanship, teamwork and hard work. Go Eagles! WASC Our official WASC visit is soon approaching. A six member visiting team will be at GPA from April 27th – 30th. GPA is continuing to work with all stakeholders and task forces to develop intervention programs for our students aligned to our self-study findings. This process has proven to be extremely beneficial and GPA will be ready to shine and ensure our accreditation come April. CCSA Conference GPA sent a team to the California Charter School Association conference in San Jose in March of 2014. GPA shined in a breakout session titled: 100/100: Increasing High School Graduation and College Enrollment Rates. The presentation team, including Peter Chodzko, Jane Firpo, Jeremy Hurlbert, and Anne Robinson, shared with the attendees about our culture, belief system, senior experience and our graduation and college enrollment data. When not presenting, our team was busy learning more about best practices from other school leaders. Thank you to the board for continuing to believe in the importance of adult learning.

Class of 2014 Update Prior to the November deadline, 79 out of 91 students in the class of 2014 submitted their applications to California State University and UC schools. In the coming months, each member of the class of 2014 will also complete and submit a minimum of one application to a community college. We are extremely proud to report that 52 students have already been admitted to four-year universities. Wing Span college center staff, in partnership with Cal-SOAP, offered workshops on Financial Aid for all students in grades 9-12. GPA Seniors Earn Chancellor’s Associates Scholarships to UCSD GPA is proud to announce that ten students from the Class of 2014 have been admitted to UC San Diego and have been offered full scholarships for four years. Through the innovation and generosity of Chancellor Khosla and the Chancellor’s Associates donors, this is the second year that UCSD has offered full scholarships to qualifying students at GPA. Six students from the Class of 2013 were awarded this scholarship and GPA looks forward to continuing this partnership in the years to come. GPA students, staff, and families are extremely grateful to Chancellor Khosla and his team for creating opportunities for our students to attend such a top-rate institution of higher education here in San Diego. Honor Roll On February 27th, Gompers Preparatory Academy awarded 385 distinguished GPA scholars, all of whom have worked very hard to earn a 3.5 or higher in both academics and citizenship, at our Honor Roll Awards. The two ceremonies, one for Middle School and one for High School, were a huge hit with parents, students, and community members. Students were honored with medals and certificates and each honoree gave a thank you speech. Senior Eagles, who have received an acceptance to a four-year college or university, were pinned with wings in a beautiful ceremony where their college acceptances were displayed proudly for the community, while being serenaded by harpist Mariea Antoinette. Staff Member Honored by Assemblymember, Dr. Shirley Weber GPA is proud to announce that our own Jenny Parsons was nominated in the Education category for Assemblymember Shirley Weber’s “Woman of the Year for the 79th District” award. She was honored at the Assemblymember’s annual Salute to Women Leaders event on Sunday, March 9 at SDSU.

Update on New Gymnasium and Academic Building The SDUSD Board of Education recently approved GPA’s Planning Grant application to pay for architects to design a master plan for the north end of campus, including a multi-story academic building and gymnasium. These new facilities will enable GPA to create an innovative “anchor” building for the high school grades and create a “home court” for GPA athletes competing in basketball and volleyball, eliminating the need to pay for busses and court fees for practices and home games. Additionally, these new buildings will enable GPA to remove the outdated locker rooms and the aging portable classrooms that currently represent about one-third Page 3 of 5!

(1/3) of the instructional space on campus. GPA will begin the exciting process of designing these new buildings in the coming weeks. Campus-wide Facilities Upgrades Schools located in the District’s designated “Hot Zones,” including charter schools like GPA, will be fasttracked for installation of air conditioning in the coming 2 years. Additionally, GPA will start to receive other “whole site modernization” upgrades slated under Proposition S, including exterior painting campus-wide, which begins later this month. Large Donation Received GPA received a $10,000 donation from the Foster/Bersin Family Fund of the Jewish Community Foundation. These funds will be used to fund the Overnight College Tour for the Class of 2015. Categories for GPA Donations In order to attract GPA donations at various levels, a “Categories of Funding” table has been created (see following page). The table allows potential donors to view possible funding options in such a way that allows each donor to select the funding option that is most important to him or her. The Categories of Funding table provides not only the total amount needed to fund current or planned projects and programs, but also presents the funding options in “bite sized” increments, such that they can see the impact that smaller donations will still have on the program of choice.
