School District

December 2016 Happy Holidays! The winter break is just around the corner and I hope everyone enjoys this holiday season. Friday, December 23 is the last day that school will be in session for the 2016 calendar year; we will re-open for students on Tuesday, January 3, 2017. Happy New Year! As the calendar year is coming to an end, we are busy planning the budget for the 2017-2018 school year. The Budget Subcommittee will soon be reviewing budget requests in preparation for fiscal year 2018. The School Committee is set to approve the 2017-2018 school budget at their regularly scheduled meeting on March 21, 2017. In the meantime, there will be many opportunities for staff, students and families to provide feedback concerning the budgeting process. The next Budget Subcommittee meeting is scheduled for December 12 at 6:30PM at QRMHS in the library. As you know, the school budget is ultimately decided at the annual town meetings. The annual town meetings for Warren and West Brookfield are typically held on the second Thursday in May. However, this date is subject to change so please stay tuned as we prepare for the next budget cycle. Maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment remains our top priority. As I have previously announced in a letter sent home with all students on November 9, 2016, the QRSD opted to participate in a voluntary program offered by the MA Department of Public Health (DPH) and the MA Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to test for lead and copper in our water. We tested 552 water fixtures at all three schools and we did have above the recommended limit results at 23 fixtures. The administration takes these results very seriously and is moving immediately to safeguard the health of the students, faculty and staff. In collaboration with MA DEP, we developed a plan to reduce the exposure to lead/copper at our schools by implementing a daily flushing procedure for the areas of concern. I have posted additional information on our website: https://sites.google.com/a/quaboagrsd.org/qrsd2/water-info . Our schools will have lockdown drills, in conjunction with state and local authorities, in the very near future. I anticipate a lockdown drill in early December before the holiday break. The next district safety meeting is Thursday, December 1 at 6PM at QRMHS. As President-elect Trump prepares for his transition, he recently nominated billionaire Betsy DeVos for US Secretary of Education. Ms. DeVos is known to be a staunch advocate for charter schools, private school vouchers and school choice. The transition is sure to be interesting. The next Superintendent’s Coffee meeting is scheduled for Thursday, December 9, 2016, at 9:00AM in the QRMHS innovation lab. All families, community members and stakeholders are invited to meet with me to discuss the past, present and future of the QRSD. Coffee will be provided. Finally, I am hosting office hours for all staff at the QRMHS library on Thursday, December 8th from 3:304:30PM. The Superintendents Advisory Council will meet at 2:15PM on December 12 in the QRMHS library. As always, if you have any questions, comments, concerns or suggestions please contact me at [email protected] or 413-436-9256 ext. 1003. Brett Kustigian, Superintendent The mission of the Quaboag Regional School District is to form a partnership with parents and the community to prepare our diverse population of students to become lifelong learners in a nurturing, safe environment with high expectations so they will become responsible, productive citizens in an ever-changing global society. Most importantly, decisions are made in the best interests of our students.

Quaboag Regional Middle/High School News Congratulations to our fall athletes for a great season! Special kudos to Girls Varsity Soccer for reaching Central MA Division 4 Semi-Finals and Varsity Field Hockey for reaching the Central MA Division 2 Field Hockey District Championship Game. Despite losses in these tournament games, the teams and coaching staffs have much to be proud of. Winter sports kick off with try-outs the Monday following Thanksgiving. For more information, go to our Athletics webpage by clicking here. Parents of Seniors, don’t miss this opportunity to purchase a personalized message in your child’s yearbook! For $40 (until December 22, 2016, then $45), you can commemorate this milestone event in your child’s life by providing a baby/childhood picture and a personalized message for publication in the 2017 Burgundy, the QRMHS yearbook. Payment for parent ads is simple, and is done online at our district website UniPay Gold pay portal (clickable link). Email (addresses below) or drop off your parent ad including the baby/child picture along with your personalized message (please clearly indicate if you need the photo returned, and if so, include a self-addressed, stamped envelope). If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Cara Cutter ([email protected]) or Ms. Jean DiRico ([email protected]) for more information. You can also purchase 2017 yearbooks online at coffeepond.com. Use the School password, 2017QYB. QRMHS teachers Maria Geueke and Dana Babcock both attended the Best Practices in the Teaching of Writing Fall Conference hosted by the Western Massachusetts Writing Project, held at UMass Amherst this past Saturday, October 29th. The theme of the conference was "Strong Voices: Engagement and Empowerment in the Classroom". The keynote speaker was Keisha L. Green, Assistant Professor of Secondary English Education at the College of Education at UMass Amherst. Dana reported that one of the best workshops she attended was called "Teaching Social Justice Through the Lens of the Holocaust."

Thank you to everyone who attended our annual College Financing Seminar on November 1st at 6:00 p.m.! This informational event was sponsored by the QRMHS Guidance Department and covered many important aspects of the process of applying for financial aid and other pieces of the overall college application process. Special thanks to high school counselors Mrs. Kinnas and Mrs. Baffuto for organizing the event and to MEFA presenter Michael Ellison. Additionally, thank you to Renee Jurczyk from North Brookfield Savings Bank for being there to help answer questions about checking accounts. If you were unable to join us for this valuable evening of information, call the Guidance Department for more information -- see Guidance Corner for contact info. On October 20th, QRMHS students in Ms. Vallee’s class traveled to the Springfield Museums. Students learned about modern artists and talked about "What is art?” and “What makes one artist’s works more famous or valuable than another's?" Students also connected music to art by viewing Kandinsky and then listening to music and picking which piece of art they felt reflected that music. This trip is part of the NEAL (New England Arts for Literacy) initiative, a grant funded project through the US Department of Education. Teachers from each QRSD school have worked closely in a week-long program with the NEAL project coordinators in the summer of ’15 or ‘16 and throughout the respective

school years and students have engaged in projects related to the NEAL objectives. The NEAL vision includes the statement, “Learning, like life, is a creative adventure. Learning is structured around big ideas and taking risks, including the risk of making teacher and student learning visible and joyful.” On Wednesday, November 9th, these QRMHS Student Council students traveled to Tantasqua to attend the Massachusetts Association of Student Councils’ Fall Conference: Catherine O'Donnell, Makenzy Schuster, Alyssa Bettencourt, Natalie Page, Haylee Wetnicka, Katherine Richard, Emily Floury, Makayla Bernard, Elizabeth Gibeault, Antonio DeLeon, Jessica Souza, Emily Barrett, and Lauren Sousa. StuCo conferences offer members the opportunity to share ideas and best practices. They learn how student leadership is best developed, enhanced, and practiced in a school-related setting. Thanks to StuCo co-advisers Mrs. Predella and Ms. Dart for helping organize and accompany the students on this trip! The Lucy Stone Chapter of the National Honor Society would like to thank everyone who donated blood at the blood drive on November 3rd! We collected 23 pints, which can provide a positive impact or even life-saving benefit of up to 69 lives! If you were unable to attend, click here for more information on donating blood at any Red Cross facility and stay tuned for our next American Red Cross Blood Drive later this year! Picture clockwise: National Honor Society members Sarah Duff, Rob Greenlaw, Aaryn Souza, Ben Wisneiwski, Brady Antonopoulos, and Sam Majewski. Did you hear Mrs. Mollins on W. A. R. E, 1250 Real Oldies radio on Monday morning, November 14th? Mrs. Mollins was talking with host Andy B. about the Mindfulness initiative that is part of the professional development trainings taking place this year within the district! What is mindfulness? Learn about what it entails—Google the clip of Anderson Cooper on CNN, discussing the concept and medical documentation of its benefits! Students in Mrs. Hansen's sculpture classes worked in relief to make giant masks. They started the process by selecting descriptions of monsters from literature. After sharing their excerpts, the class made a description board from which all students could select ideas for their unique mask. Students then built at least five features out of stiff paper. Adding these to the relief base was done using plaster fabric. Along with the five features, at least three different elevations had to be crafted into the design along with integrating one hole or deep negative space. (Stephanie Lasky, shown right, with her mask) College visits are wrapping up, but there are still schools visiting QRMHS in December! Students interested in meeting with college representatives should see his/her guidance counselor for a pass out of class. If you have any questions about college applications, college visits, financial aid, etc., please call our Guidance Department at (413) 436-5508. Seniors are also encouraged to ask their teachers for letters of recommendation well ahead of any college admissions deadlines! Quaboag students Tom Emerson, Nate Pina, Casey Pillsbury, Brandon Michon, Brian Tinker, Matt Lindholm, Chris Brodeur, and Eric Ciborowski visited Quabbin Wire & Cable on Thursday, November 17th to learn more about the industry of wire and cable manufacturing. As part of a program offered by Quabbin Wire & Cable, local high school students can learn, on-site, what the jobs within the industry require for education, background, and training. Hearing from current employees as well, Quaboag students were able to tour the facility and hear more about the opportunities within Quabbin’s organization, what is looked for in employees, and to ask questions. Special thanks to Katie Peitrowski, Corporate Services Supervisor at Quabbin Wire & Cable, for reaching out with this offer for our students, and to Mrs. Sara Kinnas, QRMHS Guidance, for organizing the event on our end and accompanying the students.

Students in Mrs. Predella's and Mrs. Mollins' classes are discussing the neuroscience of gratitude and the impact on health. As part of the unit, they invited all students and faculty/staff to add a leaf to the Attitude of Gratitude Tree in the cafeteria. Pre-cut leaves were made available during lunches on Tuesday, and all were given the option to cut their own leaves to add to the tree. The response has been great so far! At this holiday time, it’s a good exercise to take a moment and remember what things in our lives make us grateful. Mrs. Predella, Mrs. Mollins and their students exemplify the QRMHS Core Values of Respect and Support! The Us & Them: Discrimination in the Holocaust and Today program was presented to students in Mrs. Cutter’s 8th grade Technology Literacy 1 class on Wednesday, November 9th to kick off another New England Arts for Literacy (NEAL) grant-related unit on identity and bullying. Nancy Huntington from the Springfield Museums delivered an hour-long program that examined discrimination in the holocaust, types of discrimination, and events that transpired. Students worked in groups to match pictures of historical events with vocabulary terms and created timelines with cards and artifacts from actual survivors of the holocaust that live in Springfield, MA as a closing activity. This “in-school field trip” is another part of the NEAL (New England Arts for Literacy) initiative. Through a NEAL grant the whole 8th grade was able to visit the Springfield Museums! Throughout the year in history, science, and engineering classes students will be learning about how technology changes our lives. At the Springfield Museum of History students looked at how technologies invented and manufactured right here in Massachusetts, like some of the first cars and motorcycles, helped to shape American history. At the Springfield Natural History Museum students looked at how the same theme of technology/science affects change in our lives. Students focused on energy and how it can be transformed to make our lives better. Students had an opportunity to learn about static and current electricity and participate in several handson activities. We would like to thank our teachers for their dedication to the NEAL program and all of the hard work they have put into making it a success here at QRMHS! Mary M. LaFreniere, Principal Joe Salvadore, Assistant Principal

Quaboag Regional High School Guidance News The Scholarship Application Event for seniors this year will be held during the school day on Thursday, January 26 during the lunch period in the middle/high school library. This is a time for students to pick up the local scholarship applications that will be offered and to meet some of the generous community members who fund these scholarships. If a student is not able to make it to this event, the student can contact his or her guidance counselor. College acceptances will be starting to come in soon. Please let the guidance department know where you have been accepted! There will be an alumni panel meeting with the senior class on December 19. This is a great chance for our seniors to learn more about the adjustment to post-secondary options which include college, career and the military. Students will hear from alumni who have taken many paths following graduation. The small group atmosphere will allow for students to interact with the panel and to ask questions they have about what life is like after graduating from high school. Guidance Department Sara Kinnas – Guidance Counselor (Grade 9-12 A-L), Erin Baffuto – Guidance Counselor (Grade 9-12 M-Z) Christina Arpin – School Adjustment Counselor, Erica Griffin – Middle School Guidance Counselor Lorna Fairbrother – Guidance Office Administrative Assistant

Warren Community Elementary School News

Congratulations to Mrs. Kuprycz as retirement has arrived. Mrs. Kuprycz leaves WCES after 27 years of service to our school and community. The QRSD, Kathy’s sons Jeff and Chris, husband Egor, friends and relatives hosted a retirement celebration to wish Kathy the best as she begins the next chapter of her life. Kathy’s retirement will be a difficult void to fill and we will miss her thoughtfulness and caring demeanor on a daily basis.

As has been highlighted throughout the school year, WCES continues its work with the NEAL Grant on a regular basis. This month, work continued with visits by artists and a trip to Springfield Museums with Grade 3. Marji Geer, a visiting artist through NEAL worked with Mrs. Morin’s and Ms. Jaskowski’s classes. Using the theme of friendship and the books Rainbow Fish and Manfish, students participated in creating banners as a group using crayons and then water color over it. These banners illustrated their experiences with the books being read and allowed students to draw freely which helped them make connections to their book. It was nothing short of remarkable and inspiring to see our students incorporate this into their work. Students from Mrs. McKusick’s and Mrs. Milligan’s classes participated in a field trip to the Springfield Art Museum and they continue to make connections to their work through visits to Museums to support their learning and comprehension. It is important to note that all of these visitors and field trips are paid for through grants and does not cost our District any money for our students to experience these activities!

WCES students and staff had the privilage to honor our Veterans at our annual Veterans Day Assembly. This assembly gives us the opportunity to educate our students on the many sacrifices that our Veterans have made in order to provide us with rights that may be taken for granted on a daily basis. This year’s assembly incorporated work from the Neal Grant as students provided a visual presentation of poems that were read by teachers in Grade 5. These presentations helped our younger students interpret the meaning of the poems and also helped our older students make direct connections to the sacrifices many have made. Following the assembly, our Veterans and families met in the cafeteria for a light breakfast and to share thanks for all they have done. Thank you to the entire WCES Community for making this such an impressionable ceremony and a special thank you to the 5th Grade Team for coordinating this event.

Eagle Scout candidates have been busy around town completing community service projects as part of their requirements to become an Eagle Scout. These projects have included building walkways and putting arms on fire hydrants as markers in the winter in case of an emergency. Martin Flynn, resident of Warren and alumni of WCES, has completed an Eagle Scout project at WCES which connected the lower parking area to the lower field with a boardwalk. The lower field at WCES will be used by the Warren Baseball/Softball Association which has made significant improvements to the lower field. Marty presented his plan to the building subcommittee and following their approval, raised enough funds for the materials needed to build the boardwalk. In addition, Marty was responsible for coordinating a schedule and managing over 30 volunteers during the course of a month to complete the project. Thank you Marty for giving back to your homeschool and community. The boardwalk will be used for years to come!

Thanks to the efforts of Mrs. Meegan and Mr. Joinville, students from the QRSD participated in the Annual Tree Lighting event held at the Town Common in Warren. WCES’s Chorus opened the event with four songs followed by the Quaboag Singers who closed the ceremony with a few holiday tunes. Thank you to the Town of Warren for inviting our students to take part in this special evening. Thank you to Mrs. Meegan and Mr. Joinville for taking time out of your busy schedules to make this night possible for our students and families.

As an annual tradition, our Preschool Program hosted a share a meal with our preschoolers and their families. This was a great opportunity for our families to collaborate during the Holiday Season while enjoying performances by our youngest cubs. Our preschoolers performed many different songs pertaining to their daily learning and activities which showcased the progress that they have made over the course of the first few months of the school year. Following these performances, our families each brought in a dish to share with all families and enjoyed discussing the progress of their children. Thank you to the Preschool Team for coordinating this event and bringing our families together for a special day! On Behalf of the WCES Team, Mr. Steve Duff, Principal

West Brookfield Elementary School News

Fifth Grade students had a wonderful opportunity to visit the JFK Library in Boston this past week to learn more about the influence and impact that this president had on the world. The trip was graciously organized by Mr. Robert Potvin, local historian, and gran “pops” of Chase, Lily, Maddie, and Evie Potvin. Mr. Potvin has an ongoing display at the Merriam- Gilbert Library in West Brookfield and he has presented on the topic of “Great Presidents” recently. Mr. Potvin shared a video with students on the ride out to Boston and imparted his great knowledge. Students were able to tour the museum and came back very excited about what they saw and learned. The coach bus was donated for the trip from Lizak Bus Company and the fees for the chaperones were waived by the museum all thanks to Mr. Potvin. The winter concerts will be held on Tuesday December 6th at 6:30 pm for Kindergarten- Grade 2 students and Wednesday December 7th at 6:30 pm for Grades 3- 6 and band students. Immediately after the concerts, Ye Olde Tavern will be hosting families and providing a warm place to gather and connect. Complimentary milk, cookies, and hot cocoa will be available as well as a “child-friendly” light menu offering. The concerts will be in a sing-along fashion this year with many of the songs being seasonal favorites. We encourage everyone to bring your family and friends. This is sure to be a fun, festive night for all! There is some discussion of families leaving the concert and caroling their way to Ye Olde Tavernsounds like lots of fun to be had. The PTG is running a Fall Fundraiser just in time for the holiday season. The WBES PTG has joined Scrip Fundraising and they are offering gift card purchasing. You can purchase gift cards through the PTG and Scrip will donate a percentage back to the PTG. There are many great gift cards available and they make terrific gifts. Orders are due by December 9, 2016 and they will be available for pick up on December 20, 2016. The student who sells the most will win a $25 gift card of their choice. The day before Thanksgiving is always busy here at West Brookfield Elementary School. We hosted our annual Community Reading Day, Preschool Share-A-Meal, and Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. Be sure to ask your student about these fun learning activities.

Yours in learning, Colleen Mucha, Principal

District Technology Welcome Matt Gromosky! Last month the Technology Specialist position at Warren Community Elementary School was vacated rather suddenly. The position remained open for a few weeks, and any interim technology needs were handled by the Technology Coordinator. We are pleased to have filled this spot with an individual who is a former “Geek Squad” tech from Best Buy. Please welcome Matt Gromosky, the newest member of our technology department. Matt will serve an important role as the main technology contact for WCES.

Peter Hadley, Technology Coordinator

QRSD Grant Update Last month I shared some elements of the upcoming Warren Community Elementary School’s 21st Century Community Learning Center DESE evaluation. DESE will be observing the program during a site visit and will be asking the following questions among others: What may I observe today that will demonstrate an intentional connection to SAYO academic outcomes and to the school-day program? How do you incorporate feedback from teachers, families, and students? What is the process for providing ongoing PD and TA to program staff? What type of PD is offered? There are a minimum of 24 elements that the DESE will be looking for and I will be sharing more of them in upcoming newsletters. Professional Development will be provided for select 21st CCLC staff on December 1st and 2nd on Social Emotional Learning, Service-Learning, and Project-based learning by DESE in Devens, MA. The QRSD is eligible to apply for Project Lead the Way expansion and start-up grants. This is the first time in 7 years that grants have been made available to Massachusetts for Project Lead the Way from PLTW supporters. Principals are asked to submit plans to Madeline Smola by December 7th in order to meet the grant deadline. Ongoing Grants: The QRSD is in its third year of the New England Arts and Literacy - $48,390. WCES 21st CCLC IEP students enhancement grant - $8,500. WCES 21st CCLC afterschool grant - $114,840. If you have any questions about these grants please contact Madeline Smola at [email protected], 413-436-5991, ext. 1903. Madeline Smola, Grant Manager/21st CCLC District Coordinator/Administrative Analyst

District Finance and Operations ______________________________________________________________________________ I recently attended a training to become certified as the Quaboag Regional School District’s designated asbestos program coordinator. In order to comply with the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act of 1986 (AHERA), I am hereby notifying all parents/guardians, teachers, building occupants, employee organizations and our entire school community of the following. In the past, asbestos was used extensively in building materials because of its insulating, sound absorbing, and fire retarding capabilities. Virtually any building constructed before the late 1970s contained some asbestos. Intact and undisturbed asbestos materials generally do not pose a health risk. Asbestos materials, however, can become hazardous when, due to damage or deterioration over time, they release fibers. If the fibers are inhaled, they can lead to health problems, such as cancer and asbestosis.

The AHERA regulations required that asbestos management plans be in place in all school facilities. However, the Warren Community Elementary School is excluded from most of the regulations since it was constructed after October 12, 1988 and a signed statement from the architect or project engineer has been retained stating that no ACBM was specified in the building’s construction. The requirements of an excluded school are: - Development of a Management Plan; - Annual notification to parents, legal guardians and staff of the availability of the AHERA Management Plan; - Information on the designated person who coordinates asbestos activities in the school system; - Retain the statement from the architect or project engineer stating that no ACBM was specified in the construction of the school. It is the intention of the Quaboag Regional School District to comply with all federal and state regulations controlling asbestos and to take whatever steps are necessary to ensure students and employees a healthy and safe environment in which to learn and work. You are welcome to review a copy of the asbestos management plan in the school district office located at the Middle/High School, at the administrative office of the Warren Elementary School during regular business hours or on the school district’s website: www.quaboagrsd.org I, Camie Lamica, am the designated asbestos program coordinator. All inquiries regarding the asbestos plan and asbestos-related issues should be directed to me at 413/436-9256 ext. 1008 or [email protected] Camie Lamica, Assistant Superintendent for Business

Student Support Services Happy Holidays! I hope everyone had a restful and peaceful Thanksgiving. In the Department of Student Support Services, Ms. Harder and Mr. O’Neill partnered students in each of their programs to cook a Thanksgiving feast. Tips of the Month The series on organizational strategies continues with more tips offered by Lexi Walters Wright: 1. Encourage your children to use outlines, graphic organizers or concept webs to organize ideas for school projects. Two column notes can be used when studying for a test. These are all tools they have learned in school. 2. Encourage your child to use color-coding to separate out important papers. For example, s/he could designate a different colored folder for each subject and one for documents that need to be signed

and returned. Your child could also use two different colored pens when writing an essay (one for the role of author and another for the role of editor). As always, my door is open. If you would like to meet with me, please feel free to give my secretary, Renee Dalve-Contacos a call to schedule an appointment. She may be reached at 413-420-1994. Sincerely, Dr. Deidre Osypuk, Director of Student Support Services

District School Nutrition & Wellness Welcome to Winter! Please remember to check your student balances. There are now two options for online payments.
