Scope of Device Management in VOLTHA • The following items are considered in the scope of device management for VOLTHA 1.0 release. • ONU remote enable/disable • ONU reboot • Delete ONUs • OLT Reboot • OLT remote enable/disable • Retrieve active SW version (stored in “device” section of config_root) • ONU Self Test Functionality • OLT/ONU Software Update
• VOLTHA framework already supports device management items highlighted in BLUE. Items in RED are not supported.
Architectural changes to support missing items • Below is the overly simplified voltha architecture and the items highlighted in blue will need to be enhanced. Adapter changes are very device specific and need to be addressed separately. The next slide summarizes the changes. openflow

Architectural changes to support missing items (continued) • The existing device_agent could be re-used, i.e., no new agent is necessary. • The device_agent, adapter_agent and IAdapterInterface needs to be enhanced to support missing items. • Adapter changes are out of scope of the framework since these are very device specific.
Device Management - Software Update • The voltha.proto will be enhanced to provide new RPC for Software Update Request. The input parameter for the RPC will be the url where the image is located. It is assumed that the url will be reachable over the LAN from VOLTHA instance. • The image will need to be downloaded by the adapter. The download mechanism is not yet finalized, but to start with can be one of http or anonymous ftp. The adapter will carry out the software update on the device and send a success/failure response once the procedure is complete. • For the initial implementation, there will be no Software Image Manager, but one could be implemented in the future that does caching, versioning etc. The adapters could pull the image from the Software Image Manager instead of getting it from the network.
Device Management – ONU Self-test functionality • The voltha.proto will be enhanced to provide new RPC for ONU Selftest functionality. • The adapter will talk to ONU (if supported) to execute the self-test and send a SUCCESS/FAILURE result. If self-test is not supported by the ONU, the adapter shall send the response as NOT SUPPORTED.
