100 cc Snow Profile Density Sampler Randall Osterhuber DonnerSummitAvalancheSeminars.com (530) 412-3585

Cut shape (dark lines) out of sheet metal and fold on red lines. Solder the two joints (green lines). Solder a copper half-inch plumber's pipe strap (or equivalent) to the 4 x 5 cm back to use as a small handle. Fill with water then weigh the water to determine the sampler's exact volume (1 cc of water weighs 1 g). If the volume is > 100 cc, add small beads of solder, silicon, or epoxy to the inside joints to decrease interior volume as necessary. If sampler volume is less than 98 cc or more than 102 cc, adjustments will have to be applied when calculating density to two significant digits. example 1: V = 100, m = 19, ρ = 19 example 2: V = 103, m = 19, ρ = 18 example 3: V = 97, m = 19, ρ = 20 where V is the sample volume (cc) m is the mass of the sample (g) and ρ is the corrected density (% by volume)

Snow density, ρ, is measured in units of kg/m^3, g/cc, or as percent by volume. This small cutter can sample a snow layer as thin as 4 cm. Push the sampler into a smooth, plumb wall of the exposed snow profile until the back plate just comes flush with the snow. (If you're working on an inclined snowfield, be sure to sample the "observation" wall of your snowpit.) Be careful not to push it further as this will compress the sample and give erroneous data. The 5 cm side of the back plate should be parallel with the snow stratigraphy, the 4 cm side perpendicular to the stratigraphy. While keeping the sampler in place, slide your crystal card into the profile and against the long sides of the sampler thereby cutting the sample free from the snowpit wall. Remove and weigh sample with 1-gram resolution (or better) scale.
