Convenor's Welcome My name is David Stiles and I am the 2018 Conference Convenor. I would like to extend a warm welcome the delegates competitors and our international guests to the beautiful city of Adelaide. Once you meet me at the Conference I will have completed my Bachelor of Laws and Legal Practise (Hons) with Flinders University. I am a Griffith University Alumni after completing my first degree externally. While I have chosen to keep the format of the Conference like previous years, I have spent the last 18 months building a conference based on your input and feedback. This year’s conference will have an Adelaide spin, and you will be able to experience some of the iconic features of Adelaide. I welcome you to direct any questions to either the ALSA Committee, or the Conference subcommittee. We have all worked hard to make this conference special, and we are here to assist with any enquiries. I can’t wait to meet you all in Adelaide on 2 July 2018. David Stiles ALSA Conference Convenor 2018

Delegate Welfare During Conference, we wish to emphasise the importance of taking time to look after yourself both mentally and physically. Conference can be an extremely full on week, both for Councillors and Competitors. It can be high pressure, high stress, and both mentally and physically exhausting. It is important to ensure you take the opportunity to look after yourself, both in and outside ALSA events. If you don’t feel like going out to drink, then don’t feel obligated to do so. If you feel like you need a break from a heated discussion in Conference, don’t hesitate to go and grab a snack and take some time out. During Conference, ALSA will be partnering with ADES Australia to run morning activities for Tuesday-Thursday of Conference. The ethos of their #mymorningsmatter program is all about increasing our own Well Being and changing alcohol culture by using our mornings more positively. Therefore, we hope these activities will encourage students to start their days with a positive attitude, feeling energised and motivated! It’s also important to take other people’s feelings into consideration, especially when you’re in an environment with alcohol. This means making sure that you aren’t making people feel uncomfortable, you’re helping contribute to events in a positive way and that you’re not subjecting someone to comments that they may not find appropriate. At Conference, the Head of each Delegation will be responsible for their students. If you are concerned about the behaviour of a member of your delegation, please do not hesitate to speak to your elected representative. Alternatively, if someone is making you or another student feel uncomfortable, or you would like to discuss an incident at Conference please contact me at [email protected] or call or text. I am always available for a coffee or a chat! Above all, we want Conference to be a safe and supportive environment for everyone! Mardi Grivas ALSA Vice-President (Education) 2018

Information for Councillors ALSA facilitates triannual Council meetings. These Councils are a body comprising of the ALSA Executive and Committee and two representatives from each LSS/LSA in Australia. As ALSA’s managing body, the Council discusses current issues in the ALSA administration as well as, and more importantly, national issues in legal education. The Council’s most important function is being a knowledge sharing forum for all LSS/LSA’s. These meetings include a number of workshops, seminars and breakouts on topics nominated by councillors based on issues they are facing. At Conference, Council will be held a Flinders University City Campus, located at Victoria Square Adelaide and commence at 9am each day. Lunch, morning tea and afternoon tea will be provided each day. As with February Council in Brisbane, July Council will also have a theme. This Council’s theme is “Education and Advocacy”. Although discussions at Council will not be strictly about these topics, we do suggest that your Presidents and Education Officers/VicePresidents will get the most benefit out of attending. Councillors are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times. We encourage robust discussion, however, please keep it respectful and pay attention. The Vice-President (Administration) and President will run a speaking list. To add your name, simply raise your hand. Each speaker will have 60 seconds. The President will always get the first and last position on the speaking list and the VPA retains the right to cut the speaking list at any time. If you have any topics that you wish to be added to Council Discussion, please email Jessica Popple at [email protected].

Competitors must be on time and will face penalties as per the ALSA competition rules for being late to competition sessions. No printing facilities will be provided by the ALSA so please make these arrangements yourself and ensure you arrive fully prepared for your competition. JUDGES Prior to the ALSA Conference, Student Judges will be supplied, via email, with the question and bench book, the ALSA competition rules for the competition they are judging and the ALSA Student Judges Guide. All documents will be anonymous, with teams all given a numerical identification code. Judges are to ask for the last names of the competitors, however, in order to complete the scoresheets. This anonymity will remain throughout the entire process and is crucial to the fairness and nature of the competition.
