Dear Headteacher, We are pleased to invite your school to take part in a new exciting global event connecting young people and decision makers all over the world. On Friday 20th October, MP’s Back to School will see Parliamentarians, local officials and Representatives from 5 continents visit local schools to learn with students about the world’s 100 million most marginalised children. During the week that marks the United Nations International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, we’ll be discussing why every child should be free, safe and educated. It is being organised by the 100 Million Campaign, founded by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Kailash Satyarthi. The campaign provides opportunities for young people to support the most marginalised children and young people in their community and around the world. More information is available at www.100million.org/backtoschool By taking part in MPs Back to School Day you will: • Join thousands of schools across the globe whose students are learning about the 100 million children currently denied their right to be free, safe and educated. • Support students in your school to be active citizens, sharing their passion and ideas for a better world directly to Members of Parliament • Help encourage students to think of other young people in their community, their country and around the world increasing global understanding and compassion. In this pack, you will find: • Back to School Day Q&A with guidance and information so your school can join with thousands around the world and a suggested Lesson Plan developed by professional teachers and tailored to the UK curriculum. • A letter template for you to tailor to the Member of Parliament you would like to invite. MPs BACK TO SCHOOL PACK

FAQ What is happening around the world? Decision Makers across 5 continents will be visiting schools and meeting with young people to discuss what can be done to ensure all young people are free, safe and educated. From Brazil to Bangladesh, Japan to Ghana thousands of parliamentarians and schools will be taking part. What is the 100 million Campaign? The campaign started in India last year and aims to help 100 million young people support the world’s most marginalised 100 million young people to be free, safe and educated. Inspired by former child labourers who have gone on to rescue hundreds of others, it was set up by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Kailash Satyarthi and aims to connect young people in schools, colleges and communities around the world and help increase global understanding and compassion. What do we mean by free, safe and educated? As the lesson plans show, the students themselves identify the focus they would like to prioritise within free, safe and educated. Examples included eradicating violence against children, ending child labour and child trafficking and ensuring every child goes to school. How can my school take part? You need to do two things: • Register your interest either online at www.100million.org/backtoschool or by posting the registration form at the end of this pack • Invite your Member of Parliament to take part (a draft letter is included to make this easier) What if we want to do other things during the visit? We know that there may be other activities that you would want to do with your MP. As long as the visit includes the enclosed session where young people teach the MP, your school will be counted and listed as part of the global activities presented to the United Nations Secretary General later in the year. My MP is not available, can I invite a local councillor or another decision maker? Yes. The global day is encouraging decision makers to go back to school and whilst we expect thousands of parliamentarians to participate we also expect thousands of other decision makers to take part such as local councillors, local education officials and community leaders. It is entirely up to you. Does this fit in with the curriculum? Yes. The materials have been designed by teachers to fit in with the UK curriculum, specifically Citizenship Education. The focus is on an educational experience for both students and decision makers, and everything has been designed bearing this in mind. How can students get further involved? Students who are 13 and over can sign up for more information on how they can be involved beyond Back to School Day. We will also be providing more materials to those teachers who would like further information. You can find out more about how young people are starting groups in Schools, Universities and Communities across the world to continue learning about and supporting the rights of all children at www.100million.org.

LESSON ACTIVITY: TEACHER’S NOTES Vision and Objective: Students learn about the barriers young people face around the world in realising their right to be free, safe and educated. Developing critical thought and active citizenship skills through engaging with peers and decision makers on potential solutions.

Delivering the Activity: The main activity is asking students to imagine the journey needed to build a world where all children are free, safe and educated and to create a map to visualise this. They are encouraged to think of the barriers facing children around the world and work in groups to brainstorm potential ways to end the injustice.

Time

Activity Begin by showing the 2-minute video to contextualise the activity and demonstrate the global scope of the day.

5 minutes

From the 1st of October, a short film will be available to download which explains what is happening around the world in 2 minutes, including a short message from Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Kailash Satyarthi. When you register we will send you the file and link to use. Ask students to form groups and give each one a fact-sheet, activity guide and journey template.

5 minutes

Introduce the activity by sharing that they are joining thousands of other children across the world drawing maps of the journey needed to build a better world. You can also give the example that in India thousands have been marching for the past month from the bottom to the top of the country, over 15,000 kilometres, to ask their leaders to protect children from trafficking. Ask groups to use the fact-sheet to follow the instructions on the handout and create a visual map of the journey to their chosen goal. Encourage them to think primarily about the barriers they might face along the way and then to add potential solutions as bridges at the end. Creativity is key and if possible add colour and decoration to their journeys.

10–15 Minutes

All the information they need to complete the activity is on the factsheet in this pack. However, if there is time the students can do further research using the accompanying links. Once the students have finished creating their journeys, ask them to prepare a way to present their journeys to an MP. Several examples are on the next page. Encourage the students to think about the key facts they’d like to convey and any questions they would like to ask their MP.

10-15 minutes You might want to choose one or two journeys (perhaps the students could vote which) to present to the MP considering the limited time you may have. If the MP you have invited is unavailable, you could also use these ideas to present to another class, in an assembly or perhaps to parents, and then send your MP a letter instead.

PRESENTATION TO MP: Please see below for some ideas for how students can present their work to the MP. You can do whatever presentation method you and the students would like - be as creative as you wish and the format it is entirely up to you. If possible, playing the film at the beginning will give everyone in the room context on what is happening around the world. Similarly, if you are able to take a photo or a selfie of the decision maker with the students at the end this will provide a good record of the event for everyone involved and for the global presentation to the United Nations.

MP Presentation Ideas 1) Reverse lesson: You could ask the MP to sit in the classroom as the students take on the role of a teacher. Presenting their journey as a poster, PowerPoint or in a speech. Students can pose questions to their ‘class’ when finished, with the MP taking the role of student in responding and asking follow-up questions in return. 2) 100 Step Walk: You could take the MP on a physical walk of 100 steps around the school using the students drawn journey as a guide. Stopping at the different barriers identified and asking the decision maker their thoughts on how to solve this issue. This interactive activity would link with the 100 Million Campaign’s march in India and inspire the MP with the action young people are taking across the world to protect the most marginalised children. 3) Send a letter: If your MP has been unable to join, you can make sure they still hear about the great ideas from your students by posting some of their journeys in the post.

FOLLOW UP: Here are some suggested follow up activities – often these would be done by the school but if some of the students are interested, they can take a lead and it will be a useful extension of the learning involved. 1. Send a thank you letter to the decision maker with a print out of the photo taken at the end. a. The letter could remind them of any commitments they made and ask them to keep you informed on what they are able to do for the most marginalised children in their local community and around the world. 2. Students can see photos from other events around the world and send messages to the organisers on the website www.100million.org/backtoschool 3. Those who want to get further involved (and who are over 13) can choose to become a change-maker for all young people to be free, safe and educated. They can connect with other young people across the world and join as a school or community group or as an individual to drive local change that has a global impact at www.100million.org

ACTIVITY GUIDE:

BARRIERS

This week marks the end of a huge Yatra across India (over 15,000 kilometres!) where young people have been marching to ask their decision makers to protect children from trafficking. Thousands of young people like you, in classrooms across the world, are joining them by creating their own journeys towards a world where every child is free, safe and educated. Using your factsheet and any other information you have found, discuss with your group what your journey’s end goal is. It could be a community goal (e.g. all children in my community are in school), a national goal (e.g. no child in my country goes without education) or a global goal (e.g. education for all).

STEP 1: As a group, discuss together the types of barriers you might face when trying to reach your goal. What kinds of things would be a challenge to overcome? Are there different challenges for girls? Are there different challenges for children with disabilities or for the world’s poorest children? For example, if your goal is Education for all, then a potential barrier could be child marriage is stopping girls going to school. Cut out a barrier symbol and stick it onto your journey, writing a description of the barrier underneath.

STEP 2: Now your group has thought about the barriers you might face on this journey, try to think of ways these problems could be solved. For example, if you’ve identified a barrier to the goal of No child in my country working as extreme family poverty that means children have to work to eat, then a solution could be a basic income or free school meals for children who go to school. Cut out a bridge and stick it onto your journey, adding a description of the solution you’ve come up with above it. When you’re finished you can make the map as colourful and decorative as you’d like!

USEFUL INFO What is the Yatra?

Who is this activity for?

A Yatra is a march for social awakening. From September to October this year, Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Kailash Satyarthi is leading a march from the South of India to the North. The nationwide march will raise awareness on violence against children, with rural towns and villages, law enforcements and businesses brought together to discuss issues of child trafficking, forced labour and sexual abuse.

This activity has been designed for ages 11-15. While it deals with some challenging topics, it’s important everyone is introduced to globalised compassion from day one.

This isn’t the first of its kind. In 1998, 103 countries took part in the Global March against child labour. The 7 million footprints from that event resulted in Convention 182 on the Worst Forms of Child Labour. It became one of the fasted ratified conventions in the world.

Factsheet To support this activity, we have designed a factsheet to give additional information challenges the world faces in achieving education for all. It provides prompts to support students in completing the activity. Where possible, the session should be accompanied by internet access or other research methods so that students can complete further research. If this isn’t possible though, the activity can still be conducted.

The definitions below and accompanying factsheet will also support in delivering the activity.

Definitions Some useful definitions when talking about the reasons children miss out on an education: The 100 million most marginalised refers to the 168 children who are exploited for the profit of other, at the expense of their education, childhood and future. Child trafficking is when a child has been moved within a country or across borders for exploitation. A refugee is someone who has fled because of persecution in their home country and been given refuge by another. An asylum seeker is someone who is trying to leave, or has left their country because of persecution. A migrant is some who has moved from their country to another country or region for a better life.

EDUCATION 263 MILLION children worldwide are not in school UNITED NATIONS

The United Nations says that EDUCATION is a human right. But around the world there are still many BARRIERS facing children stopping us from achieving education for all.
