Senior of the Month: Samantha Knepper Samantha Knepper, daughter of William and Melissa Knepper, Weatherly, has been named Senior of the Month for November at Weatherly Area High School. Samantha serves as president of the WAHS chapter of the National Honor Society, president of SGA, secretary of the Interact club, and historian of the Class of 2018. She is a member of the softball team, high school band and county band, the Health Careers Club, and is an editor for the high school yearbook. Samantha has participated in the TEAMS engineering competition at Bucknell University, and the Bloomsburg Math Competition. In the community, Samantha has volunteered her time as a team captain in the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Walk. Additionally, she has participated in Relay for Life, Weatherly Area Kinder Camp, and the Brian Morden Foundation. She has served as a confirmation sponsor at Our Lady of Lourdes church in Weatherly, and is employed as a busperson and server at the Powerhouse Eatery in White Haven. Sponsor for the month of November is Whitewater Challengers, Inc., of White Haven.

“Teacher’s Pet” Quincy, a Shetland Sheepdog or “Sheltie,” belongs to Mr. Woolbert and his wife. He is four years old and was born on July 4th (His name was chosen because of John Quincy Adams). Mr. Woolbert and his wife got their fur-baby when he was only a few months old. It was a spontaneous birthday present for Mrs. Woolbert and was the best decision the two ever made. Quincy is such a wonderful addition to the house and the family. When he is not lounging around during the day, he enjoys playing around outside, having his mommy or daddy throw some toys for him to retrieve, like his favorite tennis ball, or enjoying some snuggle time while watching a good movie on TV. He really dislikes getting up in the morning (don’t we all?) and for some reason always barks at the mailman whenever he delivers something to the house. Quincy also loves going over his cousin, Sophie’s house. Sophie is a five year old Border Collie. The two love chasing each other through different rooms of the house and share each other’s toys with one another. Any time he knows a visit is going to happen, he waits by the door, anticipating when he can see his favorite cousin. Quincy has a great personality and is loved by all of his family and friends.

Miss Kufro’s “Got Values?” Board What are values? What do they mean? How do ones values reflect on their responsibilities and character? Those were some of the questions that were asked during Family and Consumer Science Class. High school students, Grace Miller, Alexis Colecio, and Holly Gehman created this month's bulletin board. The five values they chose were humor, friendship, compassion, empathy, and sharing. They designed the board to be festive to tie it in with the holiday season. December's Got Values? bulletin board is super festive. Thank HS FCS group members Grace Miller, Holly Gehman & Alexis Colecio for the warming message!

FCS Veterans’ Cards The HS FCS class prepares over 200 holiday cards for patients at the VA hospital in WB. The students chose this as one of their Service Learning Projects. Veterans should never be forgotten.

Clothing Collection for a Good Cause

The WHS Varsity basketball team collected winter coats, hats, scarves, etc. for the Valor Clinic Foundation and recently participated in the distribution on December 3rd. This organization provides services to homeless veterans in our area. Here are some pictures of the collection and distribution. Great job, boys!

Teens Against Tobacco Use Tobacco is the number on preventable cause of death, according to Rebekah McFadden, adviser of the Weatherly’s Teens Against Tobacco Use.

Members of TATU, under the leadership of school nurse, Rebekah McFadden, tried to male those statistics more relevant by chalking the outline of a person eight times during the day, one for each class period, with forty-one tally marks inside each outline.

“Within each (45 minute) class period, forty-one people die of a disease caused by tobacco use,” Ali Hernandez said.

Taking a stand can be tough, but TATU students, like Kenny Hinkle, said the message is worth sharing. “It’s not hard because there are so many reason it’s bad, that it’s not really difficult to explain to people why it’s bad and hopefully get people to quit smoking,” Hinkle said.

~ Excerpts and photo taken from the 11/17/17 Standard Speaker article “Weatherly teens don’t need tobacco.”

Novel Review This month I have decided to review The Land Of Stories: The Wishing Spell by Chris Colfer. This is a story about twins, Alex and Connor, who accidently travel into a different world known as the Fairy Tale World. The story explains the quest they take to return home and the encounters with characters that they read about in their childhood stories. With many plot twists, alliances, and enemies the twins encounter secrets that change their world forever. I highly recommend this book, even for people who aren’t big fans of fairy tales. For some, this may come off as a children’s book; yet it is suitable for all ages. I would personally give this novel a 10/10 for creativity. Thank you for reading my review and I hope you enjoy this novel. Any recommendations for future reviews please let me know at [email protected]

Movie Review This review is on a holiday movie called “Elf.” This particular movie is a personal favorite of mine. It was released in 2003 and was directed by Jon Favreau. It is about a man named Buddy (Will Farrell) who is brought to the North Pole accidently when he was a baby. He is raised among Santa’s elves. After he is all grown up, he finally learns where he really came from and travels to New York to find his father, Walter Hobbs (James Caan).

Against his initial feelings, Walter decides to take Buddy in and quickly, Walter’s life turns chaotic. In the end, Walter finally accepts his role as Buddy’s father and everything works out.

I know this movie may sound a bit cheesy, but I promise it is a really good movie. Also, my summary barely scratches the surface of how great this movie truly is. If you have yet to see it, I recommend that you watch it over the holiday break. It will be worth it; trust me!
