A.J. Brendel Mission Statement At Brendel Elementary our mission is to provide the highest quality education in a safe, caring and challenging community that allows for individual differences and learning styles.
Dear Parents, One of the important things to do after report cards are issued is to have conversation with your child celebrating their successes. Successes are good grades, improved grades, a particular area of strength within an area, good work habits or citizenship, etc. It’s important that adult feedback centers first on the strengths or emerging strengths of children. The next step is to ask your child what areas they see are challenging for them. Ask them what makes that particular subject or behavior more difficult. Sometimes it is possible to point out how an area of strength they already have can be used to help them in an area of challenge (children don’t necessarily transfer this on their own). Then it is time to set achievable goals. Set the bar a bit higher with them, and then brainstorm and commit to the ways to make the goal happen (goal setting without a specific plan does not work!). Research shows that kids really benefit from adults helping them take ownership of their learning and their behavior. They need our help (gradually backing off as they are more and more able) at first, and they always need our conversation, true interest and feedback. When students have this ownership, and are taught ways to achieve their goals, self-esteem absolutely soars! This works at home as well for behavior, responsibility, family life in general! See the attached article for more ideas (written for educators, but do-able at home as well!). https://www.edutopia.org/blog/smart-goal-setting-with-studentsmaurice-elias Doris Goetz
