Optum Returns to Silver Bluff For many families, the search for quality, compassionate care for their aging loved ones can be emotionally draining. Nursing home residents often need specialized care and support. The UnitedHealthcare Nursing Home Plan offers more benefits than Original Medicare, plus a nurse practitioner who offers extra care coordination for the resident. Tracy Ballard, Optum Nurse Practitioner
The nurse practitioner serves as a health care advocate and provides extra care management for long-term residents in skilled nursing facilities. They work with the resident, their family, doctor, and nursing home staff to coordinate care and communication. To learn more about the UnitedHealthcare Nursing Home Plan and what it can do for your loved one, please contact the local sales representative, Joan Marion 336-769-4203, or email her at
[email protected] or contact UnitedHealthcare directly at 866-815-5325, TTY at 771, available 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET. Plans are insured through UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company or one of its affiliated companies, a Medicare Advantage organization with a Medicare contract. Enrollment in the plan depends on the plan’s contract renewal with Medicare. This plan is available to all people meeting certain eligibility requirements, such as living in a contracted nursing home.

Planes, Trains and Baby Dolls… Resident Christmas Favorites Sheri Dixon-Henson/Michael Conard
Side Rails in Skilled Facilities Brittany Floyd
“I had several that come to mind,” said Joe Simpson (Pigeon Valley). “A Red Flyer Wagon and a gun and holster. But I really thought the gas powered Air Plane was cool.”
Bill Owen (Pigeon Valley) remembers his most memorable and favorite gift from Santa was a Red Ryder BB Gun. “And I got my butt whooped over it.”
Beulah Farmer (Silver Bluff) recalls, “the most memorable gift I ever received was the last doll I got from my mother and daddy. I was about 7 years old. It had real black hair, the type you could curl and fix, shiny little shoes, a red and white polka dot dress made with Swiss Voile. My sister and I had it for one year. The next Christmas, there was a house that got burned in the neighborhood. The family’s presents were wrapped and under the tree and were burned up. Nothing was left to salvage. My sister Betty and I gave our doll to the girls in that family. We didn’t cry; we just knew it was the right thing to do.”
Marsha Coffman (Pigeon Valley) remembers every year that her favorite Christmas gift was always a big kiss from her husband.
Due to the new regulations imposed by the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid, Silver Bluff has initiated a side rail policy to assess the risks and benefits for use to maintain the safety and wellbeing of our residents. A comprehensive nursing assessment will be completed and documented upon admission and quarterly to determine if side rails can be used safely and effectively based on the resident’s cognitive status, ability to use the side rails properly, and benefits of use for the side rails. If you have any questions or concerns related to your loved one and their ability to properly use side rails, please contact me at 549-0301.

SBV Salvation Army Christmas Fundraiser
Silver Bluff’s Angel Tree Michael Conard
For 25 years, Silver Bluff puts up an Angel Tree with each resident's name on it so that they receive a gift and do not go unnoticed. The tree is placed just inside the TV Sitting Room at the top of Rhododendron Way. Please stop by and take an angel and provide a gift for one of our residents! If you need suggestions as to the resident's needs, please talk with the caregivers for that resident and they can give you some suggestions, sizes, colors, etc.
Michael Conard
Last year, residents of Silver Bluff enjoyed going out to Ingles in Canton to ring the bells for the Salvation Army Annual Fundraiser. It was a great way for the residents to connect with the community and talk to folks in Haywood County who shop at Ingles. This year, SBV residents will be ringing bells again. We hope to see you on the following dates: Dec. 11th 10am-2pm Dec. 14th 10am-12pm Dec. 18th 10am-2pm Dec. 21st 10am-2pm
Come out and see us! 3
