President’s Message As 2016 rapidly comes to a close, I would like to thank all of the board members, chapter officers, fabulous presenters and CALAPT members who have helped to make this a wonderful and successful year! CALAPT is a volunteer run organization. Board members and officers contribute countless hours of work in order to build local play therapy communities and to provide quality, affordable play therapy trainings. Our presenters volunteer their time for our 90 minute trainings so that we may offer them for free. It is exciting to see our community grow and to see the power of play therapy becoming more accepted and integrated into the mental health field and beyond!

With this year behind us, 2017 is looking to be another great year, with amazing opportunities for the California play therapy community. We will begin the year with “The Inspired Play Therapist: Engaging in Self-Care and Remaining Passionate About Our Work”, sponsored by our Fresno Chapter. We are honored to have Jodi Crane PhD, LPCC, NCC, RPT-S present this workshop for us. In addition to being a professor, a published author, a nationally recognized presenter, Jodi is also the incoming Chair of the Board of Directors for the Association for Play Therapy. This workshop will have a strong experiential component and will provide tools for use with clients and supervises as well as for yourself - what a great way to start 2017!

Our Southern California Regional Play Therapy Conference will be held March 6-7 in Rancho Cucamonga, with renowned play therapist Liana Lowenstein presenting both days. Be sure to register before January 5 when rates increase! Our Northern California Regional Play Therapy Conference will be held July 21-22 in beautiful Avila Beach. Registration will open shortly (additional details later in this newsletter). The Central Coast is a wonderful vacation spot, so be sure to book your lodging well in advance as things book up. Please check out our calendar of events in this newsletter, on our website and follow us on social media to make sure you do not miss anything. Finally, as I end my tenure as President, I welcome Robin Christopherson, LMFT, RPT as incoming president. It has been an honor to serve with and for each and every one of you! Happy Holidays!

CalAPT Chapter Updates Sacramento Chapter This year is coming to a close and it has been another busy playful year. I hope this message finds you all well and everyone is looking forward to a playful holiday season. In September, the Sacramento Chapter was truly fortunate to host Clair Mellenthin, LCSW and Director of Child and Adolescent Services at Wasatch Family Therapy in the Greater Salt Lake City Area. She provided a powerful 6.0 CEU training on the use of play in healing trauma and attachment issues entitled “The Power of Play - Trauma and Attachment”. The training was held at Shriners Hospital for Children in Sacramento, CA. Shriner’s continues to extend their generosity to our chapter by donating a lovely conference room space every year for our 6 CE training.   We will end our year this month, December, with a 1.5 CE where we look forward to an interactive sharing experience led by Lyla Tyler, LMFT, RPTS. Lyla will guide this discussion after watching “10 Peas in a Pod” which features shared play therapy techniques from Paris Goodyear-Brown, Scott Riviere and Dr. Janine Shelby. Our new year will start with a new board which will include: President ~ Katherine Barrett, LCSW, RPT-S President Elect ~ Renee Bond, LPCC Secretary ~ Julie Cartwright, LMFT Beth Limberg, PhD, RPT-S will start the new year off with a training in January. Dr. Limberg has more than 25 years of experience working with children and families often in high conflict situations. Her training entitled, “Families in Play Therapy”, will explore what conflict may look like in the families that come to play therapy, and experience how the healing powers of play can move families past disagreements and into problem-solving opportunities. Thank you, Katherine Barrett, LCSW, RPT-S, President-Elect, Sacramento Chapter
