Do you want your child to believe in him or herself? Do you want to have a more positive attitude that will bring you fulfillment and happiness? Can you make each day your masterpiece? The next few newsletters will focus on answering these questions. My belief is that a more fulfilled student or staff member is more productive and creative. Dr. Zimmerman outlines a few key secrets to being fulfilled, happy, building a positive selfesteem and being productive in his book Pivot:

You can build a better, stronger self-esteem with practice, using seven techniques. The process is not that difficult. As master juggler Rob Peck says, "You don't have to believe in magic-because the real magic is in believing. When your self-esteem is in great shape, you'll have a very positive attitude. And if you've got a very positive attitude, you'll have lots of self-esteem, fulfillment, and happiness. The first technique is:

Affirm Yourself- Human beings have one major tool that other creatures do not have. We can determine, to some extent, how successful we're going to be by carefully choosing the words we tell ourselves. If you tell yourself that you just can't do something, you'll probably be right. And if you tell yourself you can do it, you'll also be right most of the time. This is called self-talk or affirmations. Bob Richards found out that winners affirm achievability all the time. As an Olympic pole-vaulter, and later as a TV spokesman for Wheaties, Richards took an extensive look at all the champions in all forms of athletic endeavor. He found that the vast majority of champions had somewhat "normal" bodies. They weren't born athletes, as some people like to think. But almost without exception the great athletes, the champions, did more than train their bodies. They also trained their minds using affirmations. They talked to themselves over and over again, affirming their ability to achieve and building their self-esteem. The better your self-esteem, the more fulfilled and happier you are, the more productive you are, too. For January's newsletter I will share thoughts about Surveying Your Strengths and Taking Risks. Title I Night was held on Tuesday, November 15, 2016. Students and parents present were able to attend 4 stations- games, reader’s theater, story time, and IPTV’s Ready for School. During the game session, students and parents were able to explore some board games, homemade games, computer games, and apps related to reading skills. Seventh and Eighth graders shared a Reader’s Theater performance with their group. During story time, students were read a winter story, and then students made snowflakes that can later be put on the library’s Christmas tree. Stacie Steveson from IPTV came down to share more games that families can do at home, as well as the PBS reading apps. At the end of her station, students even got to pick out a free book! Title I Night commenced with a meal from Subway following the activities. Those that attended had a great time participating and gained a few more tools to use at home to make reading more fun! A huge thanks goes out to those that were willing to help out- we wouldn’t have been able to do it without the extra help! If anyone would like to access some of the materials presented, you can find pdf or word documents of game ideas, as well as the menu and survey on my website under Title I, found at: https://sites.google.com/a/omschools.org/miss-goodale/.
