FLYING FDA Regional News Western District

Eastern District

Not long ago, I received a call from a dentist in Southern California who had gotten my info off of the FDA website. He was wondering if I was the Bill Holmes who had graduated from USC dental in 1956 and then USC oral surgery in 1958. I told him no, but that sounded an awful lot like my father. Turns out this dentist and my father had gone to dental school together. We spoke for a while and I listened to stories of past escapades, some that I hadn’t heard before. This dentist had just retired two years ago (58 years in practice) and still flies, although it’s now LSA’s instead of the twin that he used to own. As of our conversation, he is planning on coming out to the Cody meeting and I look forward to meeting him in person and hearing more stories. My reason for sharing this is it shows what a fraternity (dentists and pilots) the FDA is. My dad flew many years ago, but was never a member of the FDA. I’ve heard it before with some of the other dental ‘alphabet’ organizations, but with the FDA I truly see that what you receive is greatly multiplied by what you put in. I believe that the friends I’ve made in the short time I’ve been involved with the FDA will be friends for life. Currently, other than what promises to be a great National meeting in Cody WY this summer, there are no events scheduled for the Western district FDA. I would still like to try a breakfast meeting one morning in Northern Cal., if for no other reason than to meet new people and have an excuse to burn a little more 100 LL. With my current schedule, it will probably have to be late spring. If there are any FDA’ers in the North Cal area who would like to meet for a breakfast sometime please let me know. I hope everyone has a Great Christmas and Holiday season. Best wishes to all. Blue skies, calm winds, and when there is a ceiling, may all your approaches have the needles centered.

Remember May fly-in to Nashville. No snow and warmer temperatures. This is certainly a meeting not to miss with a Hahn and Sudderth planning team (mostly Hahn). Vickie and I wish all our FDA family a BLESSED CHRISTMAS and a very Happy New Year. Merry Christmas from the Eastern District. Steve

Central District Hello fellow dentites! Come one come all! Come to Nashville fly-in and have a ball! Hope the Holiday season find your offices bustling! I will reprint the news and info for our upcoming Central District and Easter District’s joint fly-in coming up in May so you may find hotel and airport information. Everyone knows that the key to a good time is to invite a Southerner to your gathering; so the Central District is pairing up with the Eastern District to host a fabulous fly-in to the one and only NASHVILLE, TN! Steve Sudderth and I hope to entice all of you into a fun weekend in the Volunteer State! With so many historical points of interest and the musical and cultural influences that abound in Nashville, there truly is something for everyone

Happy December, Vickie and I are in Colorado for this first week of December. We've had snow and cold. All of this is really good news for Dr. Rhoades and Feb. Snowmass meeting. Conditions should be great!

FDA Giving Back

Coming up this March we have a double header with the dive trip in the BVI just before the mission trip to the Dominican Republic. Beth and I will be flying to Florida March 2 and overnighting with my brother in Boynton Beach. On the third, we will fly to somewhere in the Bahamas to be able to get in early to Tortola on the 4th to take care of all the charter activities. After sailing and diving for a week with the group, which stands at about 11 yachts, we will hop over to the Dominican Republic to work our annual charity clinic in La Romana. This year Steve Schell and his son Alex, and Pat and Tom Kingston are joining us with 12 dental students and other volunteers on the (left to right )Elizabeth & Bill D'Angelo & Kevin and Beth D'Angelo charity clinic. Bill and Therese Shortt are not able to join us this year and my son and daughter in law can only make We'd like to have a hygienst in the group for the hygiene the sail, so we could use another dentist and a hygienist. needs. Who knows, maybe Stacy will join us this year and head up our preventative program. We get organized If you are flying down like me in a piston powered plane and Sunday evening and head out to set up our make shift want to fly tandem on the trip down let me know. If you are clinics each morning Monday thru Wednesday, then clean flying commercial and want to join the mission and not the up, inventory and store our supplies and fix up our sail, you would fly down to the Dominican on March 13equipment on Thursday. 20th. We should have the FDA dental van in operation and so hope to set up the larger group in a church or school each day and the smaller roving group will head out to the smaller camps nearby each day in the van. The sudents like the exodontia experience, and we require them to perform restorative procedures also.

Most of the group heads to an all inclusive resort for three days post mission (Thursday through Sunday) but you can also leave to head home on Thursday if you are short on time. If you have any interest in either of the above let me know , but in any case looking forward to two great weeks with our FDA friends. Dr. Kevin D’Angelo [email protected] 716-913-4036

FLYING What’s Happening

S NEW

Our own Bill Grider of Kokomo, Indiana was featured in the November Issue of Plane and Pilot. In 2002, Bill flew his beautiful Turbo Arrow on an epic flight to Europe. Bill has told his tale numerous times to the FDA, each time leaving the listeners spellbound. For safety he took along long time ferry pilot and aviation mag writer, Bill Cox, and Bill Cox's write up on this historic trip is very well written. Congratulations to Bill for being center stage in P&P and for anybody that did not get to read it, look online and it starts on page 44. If there are any other stories/awards/etc for any of our members let us know and we will get it in a Newsletter.

Wade & Carole Carnes son Kevin, and new granddaughter, Charley Stacy will be making this up to Charley for many years to come!
