Flying Dentists Association FDA-Hall of Fame Award At our last Board meeting the Flying Dentist Association voted to periodically honor those individuals that have made special contributions to our organization. Until officially voted upon, let’s call the award the FDA Hall of Fame Award. This award will be given at our annual meeting in Williamsburg, VA in June 2014. The recipient of this award paid his dues during the first year of the FDA’s existence (1960-1961), therefore making him a charter member. He could not attend the San Antonio annual meeting because he was taking his state boards. His first annual meeting he attended was in Wichita, KS in 1962. He started flying at the age of 18 in a Piper Cub which he rented for $7.00/hour. He has the following ratings and licenses: ATR mel, CFI, CFII, Com sel mel, helicopter, glider, private, and IA-Jet. He practiced orthodontics with his father for 35 years which he says was the best time of his life. He was president of the FDA in 1972 and the same year was convention chair for the Williamsburg annual meeting. Most of us know him for his fantastic work managing our website for fifteen years and producing the Flight Watch for seven years.

It is with great pleasure and honor to announce that the recipient of the FDA Hall of Fame Award goes to Paul Hoffman. Congratulations Paul and thank you for all of your hard work. Cheryl and I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday. Give me a hug, handshakes are for sissies. Andy

C L U B M ED TRI P 2014 FDA Island Adventure Four months till our 2014 Island Extravaganza arrives. There is still time to book out an idyllic week of memory making CE, incredible beauty, adventure, and just plain old getting out of Dodge. There are 87 people with 47 rooms booked (both records) and if you call soon, Stacy may be able to wave her magic wand and get you included to the following: All-Inclusive: Terrific food, several restaurants on their sprawling ocean acres, top shelf liquors, all water equipment, top flight nightly entertainment, activities galore. ALL INCLUDED! True world class diving/ snorkeling: The last 5 years our diving experience has been mediocre at best. San Salvador (what the island was called before Club Med burst on the scene) is known for its diving world wide. As a matter of fact, back in 1991 we went to The Riding Rock Inn which is adjacent to where Club Med was being built back when we were hard core divers (actually diving was everything); we could stay in a pup tent if we had to. The wall diving is out of this world! Flying there is as easy as it gets: We will have over 28 aircraft going together so this is a perfect

opportunity to fly your own plane down an indescribably beautiful Bahama island chain of 100s of islands with the most striking colors of blue, turquoise, and crystal clear water. The FDA Flight Leaders do all the flight planning for you, we take care of customs and do all the maze of paperwork, all you have to do is show up with a good attitude and look cute! We blast off from Vero Beach, Fl and follow the islands most of the way down. It is about a 2 1/2 hr trip for most of our airplanes, the wx is benign in March, a perfect time to travel. The states are mostly flyable but still cold so the warm Caribbean waters and breezes sing their siren song. We already have 6 new pilots that are in, you people are unbelievable. The FDA has a mentor system for new pilots that really takes the worry out of the whole experience.

wx window days both going down and coming back. If you are planning on stopping over in Vero Beach, remember to call the Holiday Inn Vero Beach and book

your room. Call 772-231-2300 ask for Jennifer; let them know you are with the FDA. Get on board for this one people; you will have the time of your life. Call Stacy 727-391-1750 and she will set it all up for you easy as pie.

The dates are Sunday March 16thFriday March 21st. This gives us two

FLYING WILLIAMSBURG, VIRGINIA June 27-30, 2014 FDA NATIONAL CONVENTION Gertrude and I made a site visit to Williamsburg for two days in November to work out the details for our National Meeting in June 2014. I wish the Holiday Season in Colonial Williamsburg could last through next June.

It is a 10 mile bus ride to Jamestown and you can extend your stay at the Lodge for Tuesday night. I also visited the airport and they will be very accommodating to us. Rental cars will be available from Enterprise on the field. Details regarding all of this will be coming starting January.

Williamsburg is going to be a great family spot for our group. There is plenty to do for both children and adults. I am planning for a side trip to Jamestown on Tuesday after the meeting.

Hope to see you there. John & Gertrude Shell 828-413-1409

OSHKOSH 2014 Hold onto your hats people. The biggest aviation event in the world is going to be even bigger because the Flying Dentists are going to be bringing in 50+ aircraft. The wheels are in motion and all eyes point toward the end of July for an FDA meeting that has been long in coming. The FAA has been in contact with our organizers and has us on their radar. We will be one of the 4 largest mass arrivals for the entire event. They and the EAA have a slot for us mid afternoon on Sunday, one day before the official festivities begin. It appears at this time that we will have Wausau, Wi as our staging base. It has room for this many aircraft and our own Ned Markey has a huge hangar that you have to see to appreciate which will be the site of food, flight planning,

and possibly a sleep over for some of you coming from the far parts of the good old USA. We have lodging all worked out for those that want a real bed but many of us will be camping under the wing in true OSH style. At this point we are planning on having a group catered supper with all the fixins on the grounds. As the event draws nearer, there will be more FDA specific events that the EAA will be planning just for us. Keep the dates open and don’t miss this one of a kind Aviation Extravaganza: Sunday July 27th-Wednesday 30th (many will stay later to view the night aerial show Wednesday night) Check out the link below for a snippet of Oshkosh to wet your whistle. FLYING San Juan Yachting Adventure September 19-26, 2014

My 37' Back Cove has been officially reserved! The contracts are signed and the check cashed! We are looking forward to a FANTASTIC trip next fall. The weather should be pretty nice at that time of the year. The average daily high temperatures are probably in the low 70's or upper 60's, and the nights will be cooler. In the ports, it will likely feel warmer than when on the anchor or underway. I checked with Bellingham Yachts (the charter company that I am trying for the first time this year) and asked if they could provide me with some bikes or kayaks for our week in the islands. The obliged me with two kayaks (and I will share)! Be sure to let your charter company know that you are with the FDA and you may get a 10% discount (depending on total group size). If a San Juan Yachting Adventure is not on your “Bucket List,” your list is not complete! Starting on September 20, 2014, an exclusive group of FDA members will be boarding their vessels “Bareboat” style and heading out into the beautiful San Juan Islands. We will be spending several nights in various ports, harbors and anchorages. We will be catching (or

buying) fresh Dungeness Crab, Shrimp, Fish, Clams, and Mussels to feast on. If you have had Dungeness Crab, you know how you always yearn for more, if not, this is your chance. We will be hiking, biking, shopping, dining, beach combing, relaxing, motoring or sailing in some of the best hiking, biking, shopping, dining, beach combing, relaxing, motoring and sailing locations in the WORLD! There are several routes that we can take and stops that we can make as we journey through the islands. We can do the San Juan’s tour, or we can do the International tour and see some of what the Canadian Gulf Islands offer as well. I have created two sample itineraries below but we can certainly be flexible! Having spent years sailing in the San Juan and Gulf Islands, I can tell you they are totally worth the effort!

CE will be as appropriate in a “String of Pearls” format with a different topic for each of the sessions. The first night of CE will be “Clinical Pearls,” the second night will be “Administrative Pearls,” the third night will be “Technological Advances at use in YOUR office.” There will be several “Free” nights for people to enjoy this AMAZING part of our country. The dates have been chosen so that we can enjoy the beautiful fall weather without the summer crowds and prices! My boat, (pictured above and chartered from Bellingham Yachts) will be departing on September 20th, 2014. Will Yours? Continued on page 6

FLYING FDA Giving Back

ack B g vin i AG FD

I am selfish, yes, because when I travel to charitable missions or fly patients on compassion flights for treatment I always seem to get rewarded. There are many ways to be charitable and give back to the less fortunate. We can write a check to our favorite charity and benefit from the knowledge that we are helping out. My modus operandi includes a more hands on approach. A long time ago I decided that my missions would be limited in most cases to places where I could fly my plane. In this way I would involve my family and friends and sometimes staff on the missions and at the same time keep current with my flying.

Living and working as dentists in the US and Canada, we enjoy many benefits that are not available to the general population; taking for granted what most of the world does not have. When I fly my Cessna on mission trips, I enjoy my love of flying and reinforce my understanding of just how lucky I am and therefore appreciate all the benefits I enjoy. My children have benefited from the centering these trips have taught them over the years and this, I think, has been a major contributor in their choice of professions, and the compassion they have for the less fortunate. When I interact with the recipients of my charities, I become wiser from their stories and humbled by the strength they have to fight adversity. Yes they are not selfless acts and therefore I am selfish. However I don't think that is a bad thing, because it keeps me energized to continue performing these missions .

So be selfish, volunteer for a mission, and enjoy the rewards of giving back. This coming March my Dominican Mission falls on the same dates of the FDA Dive Trip. I know most of you would rather be diving in the Bahamas, but I do have room for more volunteers on this trip, especially if the Air Guard flies the FDA Motor Dental Clinic down before the mission. If interested drop me a line. The mission starts March 16th and we start home on the 22nd. Alternatively join me with 20 dental students from SDM Buffalo on a weekend RAM mission January 18th and 19th. Dr. Kevin D'Angelo [email protected] 716-913-4036
