DECA ANNOUNCES WEBB CUP Collegiate Decathlon Teams to Compete Hello Again….DECA, The Decathlon Association is happy to announce a new plan which honors academic institutions which promote the decathlon. In an attempt to recognize colleges and universities for both deca quality and quantity, we offer the first year of the Webb Cup, an annual award for the school which leads the nation in decathlon success. Named for retired Tennessee coach Bill Webb (and with his endorsement) we will keep track of scores from the beginning of the outdoor season thru the NCAA I nationals and award points for the national ordinal placing of two, three, four, five, six, seven and eight man teams. Score need not be made in the same meet. The intention of the annual award (we still have not figured out what it will be…perhaps a rotating Cup or trophy) is to acknowledge the efforts of collegiate coaches who train a number of decathletes annually. Without being overly subjective, a points system (see below) will be used (and adjusted if need be) to determine overall school placings. The basis will be total points for a two man team, a three man team, a four man team, and so on. Over the past winter Bill and I have worked on records for team scores and that record sheet is attached below. One can see that Tennessee, before Webb’s retirement

Bill Webb, left, produced 4 NCAA national D-I champions and Tennessee holds most of the team records.

Webb Cup

three years ago, holds most of the records and dominated many of the 2 man/3 man/4 man team scores for more than a generation. The Webb Cup Point System: Place 2man 3man 4man 5man 6man 7man 8man 1st 10 8 6 5 3 2 1 2nd 8 6 5 4 2 1 3rd 6 5 4 3 1 4th 5 4 3 2 th 5 4 3 2 1 6th 3 2 1 7th 2 1 8th 1

For example, a school leading the nation with the top 2 man total will receive 10 points, the second best school on the two man list receives 8 points, etc. The school leading the 3 man list will receive 8 points while the school leading the 4 man list will receive 6 points, etc. The school with the most Cup points at the end of the collegiate season

(early June) will be awarded the Webb Cup. Had we instituted the Cup in 2012 the teams

scores would have been:

1…Arkansas

22 (2nd 2 man team; 1st 3 man team; 1st 4 man team) [Lazas 7955, Nixon 7892, Prentice 7585, Chen 6954]

2…Wisconsin

21

3…Texas

16

(6 pts=3rd 2 man team; 5 pts=3rd 3 man team; 5 pts=2nd 4 man team; 5 pts=1st 5 man team) [Grzesiak 7832, Steinbach 7739, Cato 7616, Jansen 7162, Ziemek 7042] (10 pts=1st 2 man team; 6 pts=2nd 3 man team) [Murphy 8067, Olson 7857, Greaves 7401]

4…Wichita St

9 (4 pts= 2nd 5 man team, 3 pts=1st 6 man team; 2 pts=1st 7 man team) [Young 7324, Bahner 7188, Griffith 7087, Hickey 7031, Boese 6810, Freshour 6736, Beenken 5843]

Rules: 1…No distinction among NCAA D-I, D-II, or D-III or NAIA institiutions. 2…The “season” will be defined as January 1 thru the final day of the NCAA I decathlon, approximately 22 weeks. 3…Scores for decathletes recorded “after” the season (e.g., USA nationals, international meets) will count for team record purposes but NOT for the Webb Cup standings. 4…All scorers must be made in bona-fide meets using international implements. Scores using international junior implements will not count. 5…All athletes must represent the school during the spring season. Scores for red-shirt or otherwise ineligible athletes will not count. 6…No distinction will be made for wind-aided marks. 7…Ties will not be broken…co-Cup winners will be announced. 8…Scores may not carry-over from the previous fall season. 9…Scores need not be made in the same meet.
