Diagnostic Evidence Co-operative Newcastle

NIHR DEC Newcastle Management Group The Diagnostic Evidence Co-operative (DEC) Newcastle is funded by the National Institute for Health Research and is a partnership between Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Newcastle University. As part of its governance arrangements, the Management Group, consisting of multi-disciplinary experts in their field, provides strategic guidance and advice to the NIHR DEC Newcastle.

John is Dean of Research and Innovation (Clinical) and Professor of Respiratory Medicine, Newcastle University. He was Clinical Director of R&D at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust from November 2013 to January 2016. His research interests include the development of new diagnostics and therapies in the setting of nosocomial infection (particularly pneumonia), acute lung injury, and sepsis.

Dr Lynne Corner Director of Engagement Faculty of Medical Sciences and Institute for Ageing, Newcastle University Lynne leads for Voice North - a large organisation established to harness the insights and experience of the public for research and innovation. She also leads for Patient Involvement for the NIHR Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre and is a member of INVOLVE. Lynne directs the NE Dementia Innovation Hub and chairs the NE Dementia Alliance - a stakeholder group established to support the effective development of services to support people with dementia.

Professor Andy Hall Associate Dean of Bioresources, Professor of Experimental Haematology, Newcastle University Andy is responsible for promoting the use of samples for research in the Faculty of Medical Sciences at Newcastle University and acts as the Director of the Newcastle Biobank and Designated Individual for the Human Tissue Act License as well being an Honorary Consultant Haematologist at NuTH. As the Director of the Newcastle Molecular Pathology Node his main research focus is the application of molecular diagnostics in the implementation of precision medicine. He is also involved in the development and delivery of on-line and face-to-face training on the Human Tissue Act and molecular diagnostics.

Dermot is Consultant in Clinical Biochemistry and Metabolic Medicine and Director of the Newcastle Supra-regional Assay Services for Endocrinology and Cardiovascular Biomarkers. A former Clinical Director of Laboratory Medicine in NuTH, he chairs the Tests and Investigations Formulary Committee and is an ex officio member of the NuTH Improving Investigations Group. He is a standing member of the NICE Diagnostics Advisory Committee. Dermot leads the DEC’s Evaluation Research Group.

Dr Séamus O’Neill CEO of the Academic Health Science Network for the North East and North Cumbria (AHSN NENC) Séamus leads the AHSN NENC, one of 15 AHSNs across England. The AHSNs work across NHS Trusts, Clinical Commissioning Groups, Universities, Local Authorities and companies to improve both the health and wealth of their regions through innovation. The AHSN NENC team works closely with LEPs, UKTI, NICE, Pharma and Med Tech companies to broker relationships and establish joint projects. Séamus is a Geneticist by training. He did his Degree and PhD at Queen’s University Belfast and Clinical Scientist training in Northern Region Genetics Service. Séamus has an Executive MBA from Newcastle University, and has worked for 15 years in a variety of managerial roles at the interface between the health and academic sectors.

Head of the Clinical Measurement and Engineering Unit of the Regional Medical Physics Department, Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Andrew is a Clinical Scientist and Head of the Clinical Measurement and Engineering Unit of the Regional Medical Physics Department, NuTH. He is Director of an External Assessment Centre (EAC), in partnership with York Health Economics Consortium (YHEC), for the NICE Medical Technologies Evaluation Programme. Andrew leads the DEC’s Preparation for Commissioning Group.

Dr Deborah Stocken Senior Lecturer in Clinical Trials and Biostatistics and Head of Statistics, IHS, Newcastle University Deborah advises on statistical design and analysis plans for clinical studies and is responsible for the appropriate analysis and presentation/publication of clinical data. She is the independent statistician for multiple external Trial Oversight Committees. Her portfolio ranges from large international phase III randomized controlled trials to smaller single-centre single-arm translational studies. She contributes to the strategic direction of the Newcastle Clinical Trials Unit and collaborates regularly with clinical investigators contributing to grant applications. Methodologically, Deborah has a statistical interest in prognostic and predictive modelling specifically in relation to analysis of continuous biomarker data.

Amanda Tortice

Luke leads the Health Economics Group at Newcastle University. Prior to joining Newcastle University he led an independent academic group that conducted appraisals of new and existing diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for NICE. He has an international reputation in economic evaluation and health technology assessment, including diagnostics. Luke provides advice and guidance on health economics to the DEC as part of the Evaluation Research Group. Luke is also Director of the NIHR Research Design Service (RDS) North East. The RDS provides methodological advice for applications to national peer reviewed funds like NIHR, MRC and EPSRC.

Russ Watkins Assistant Director, Business Innovation & Improvement, Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Russ has 15 years experience of working in the NHS, in a number of different sectors, including GP practices and commissioning, and has been at NuTH since 2011. Experience gained from contracting in both commissioner and provider viewpoint, he has a deep understanding of the mechanisms in which the NHS operates, is paid for and the barriers to innovation in the Health Service. Leading innovation in one of the largest Hospitals in the country is an exciting proposition and working with academic and industry colleagues is a key priority to achieve those aims.

Head of the Newcastle Joint Research Office Amanda is the Head of Newcastle Joint Research Office (NJRO), which supports research within the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Newcastle University and the Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The NJRO incorporates the Newcastle University’s Medical Sciences Grants & Contracts team and the Trust’s R&D office, together with a joint Funding Development Team. The NJRO is a partnership that helps bridge the gap between research in the academic and health communities. It aims to co-ordinate the mutual skills, experience and resources within both organisations, streamlining processes to support the joint development, implementation and successful delivery of world-class research.

Dr Michael Wright Associate Medical Director, Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Michael is a Consultant Clinical Geneticist, and Associate Medical Director at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Michael was previously Clinical Director of the Northern Genetics Service. He is a Director of NewGene Ltd a molecular diagnostics company owned by Newcastle Hospitals and Newcastle University. He has Associate Medical Director level responsibility for the diagnostic Directorates within Newcastle Hospitals. He has been involved in the identification of several genes associated with human disease and their development through to diagnostic testing with a particular interest in disorders of bone and connective tissue.
